I worked in a prototyping shop and a lot of work was mounting indicator lamps,toggle switches, connectors etc to aluminum plate mounted to instrumentation racks. By hand held power drill and drill-press Pilot Point bits were the best , cut through fast, hole smooth and square sides, stayed sharp forever. Masking tape off area, scarf coming spinning off bit is razor sharp and will scratch surface and slice and dice flesh. Multi purpose bits grab, jam up, throw material way more on soft metal plate type materials. Becoming just a common, 'Forstner bits' 3 different edge profile. Multi points in a drill-press, any flat material should be well secured to the table. Spinning plate will remove pieces of you.

As always a great video. I learnt that tip of using an off cut underneath the wood I was drilling to prevent tear out. Very handy.

Thank you. Looks like we call the brad point bit "трехточечное сверло", three-point bit, for some reason in Russian.

I had a similar full set of brad-point from a UK supplier. They were clearly inferior and so soft they could be filed ! I now have a smaller set from FISCH which are properly hardened and perform really well. I also have a full set of the DeWalt pilot ones which are good, but can 'grab' the work of you're not careful.
@TheNewbieWoodworker
@TheNewbieWoodworker 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info! I agree about the DeWalt ones, by the way. I suppose the brad point bits I have now are good enough to not need to replace, but I sure wish I had ones that are better. Sounds like you found a winner in the FISCH ones. 😄

I am drilling through , 2 1/2" of ipe, a super dense hardwood. I'm having trouble figuring out what bit is the best to use. I need speed and for the bits not to break. Making clean holes is not a priority as all I am doing is making pilot holes for screws
@TheNewbieWoodworker
@TheNewbieWoodworker Ай бұрын
That's a conundrum, for sure. Pilot holes are generally small diameter, but small diameter bits break easily. So all I can say is that you should be careful. Not much help, I know, but that's all I've got. And make sure you start by punching an indentation before you start drilling, either with a punch or a hammer and nail, so the bit doesn't wander around.

Thanks, i started woodworking with a oldschool manual hand drill. Didn't know about Brad point drill bits. Tried to drill a hole using a regular drill bit and spent an hour or two still couldn't finish.

If you're using a Bit Brace drill, the best drill bits would be Auger drill bits. They can cut smooth holes about just as good as Forstner bits. Plus, the auger part helps pull the bit to cut out more wood as you use it. I would not recommend using them in powered tools though.

I couldn't post my comment on your blog due to sign in limitations. Things that should be simple have become unnecessarily complicated. Small rant allowed since I'm 72. My attempted comment is that I bought a set (5 or 6) brad point bits from Festool 8 years ago. They work perfectly and have never needed to be resharpened (if that is even possible for a hobbyist. Enjoy your channel.

Thanks for the comment. Sorry about the login needed on the blog, but without it, I get a bunch of spam. And I agree - with age comes the privilege to rant! Regarding your bits - I love it when you buy something years ago, and it's still going strong. It's a great feeling!

So now my project is to see how many of my drill bits are wobbly..I thought I had not put them in the drill correctly...It wasn't me its the drill bit..Rockler hates you now because 12000 people want go through all the drill bits til they get a perfect set. I'm going to research this. My funny comment is that when I saw your camera arm setup I thought they looked like dental or medical lights and I asked is he a dentist? Where did he get those. Then I realized you had made them. Verynice.
