Oh Wouter ‘born brave” so brave! As soon as he could stand up and look for milk, he had a flying lesson from his Mem. Wouter the “flying foal.”but unharmed. Yvonne said that his Mem had to learn not to push her foal away. I understand perfectly, I was taught to be very careful around the hind quarters of a horse., very sensitive. and tickle-ish. Btave wouter, kepttrying and finally got his first meal Yay. 😊

So strong already! I’m glad that he’s healthy and hungry and that Geertje has a good milk supply! She is learning quickly to protect her newborn! I love the way that Wouter Rein walks under Geertje’s tummy just like Beppo Reintje’s foals did! Geertje trusts Yvonne completely. She licks her lips when her neck is scratched & she’s given verbal praise. Yvonne is allowed to approach and touch her foal too! Rein was also allowed in. These beautiful horses have wonderful relationships with their people! I can’t wait to see all of these precious babies running around the meadow, and playing together! 🥰💙🎉

You never know with a new mother whether she will be relaxed around other mares in her social group, or stressed out by everyone. Mares are always protective but some actually seem to enjoy having other mares to help protect her infant while others suddenly dont trust even those they have been very close to up until they gave birth. Its hard when your stable is very full, especially when you have any number in foal and so can't just have them out grazing all day to give mom and baby privacy. A long time ago we turned what had been a large storage area off the main stable into a a space with two large stalls that had a good distance between them to use as 'maternity stalls' to give mom and baby a couple of days to themselves to bond and give mom privacy so she is not stressed out being too protective as there are no other mares staring over the stall wall looking at the baby. Mom can rest and be calmer and it seems to really help baby get good at nursing while Mom settles down and realizes no one is going to hurt the baby or take it away. Usually after a few days, sometimes even just a day, Mom's actually ready to be back around her social group and is missing them and in in a mood to show off her offspring, probably cause the bond has taken hold and she is not worried that baby will take off with some other mare :)

Geertje does everything perfectly. Natural to be anxious for a bit but then she gets calmer. She trusts the people around her and knows the other horses. So ultimately she is ok with it all. But she is also ready and alert just in case. She is a wonderful first-time mem. 🧡🧡

It is so interesting for me seeing how Geertje was adjusting to motherhood the same time I was. Glad her 30th of March wasn't quite as stressful as mine though. Those first 36 hours were tough for me. (My boy was briefly in NICU and I was a mess - all is well now, and he is thriving like Wouter Rein.) I think I will always find Wouter Rein a little bit special because of his shared birthday with my son. ❤

OMG! He is precious. I'm even more convinced that Yvonne knows her stuff when it comes to horses because I grew up on a dairy farm and I saw the same behavior with newborn calves and their moms. From looking high and low for the milk spigot (teat) to the calf bumping the udder to get mom to let her milk come down, it's an autonomic response. Same thing happened to me when I breastfed my babies. There is also a good bit of engorgement in the utter in the beginning and can be quite painful the first few times they nurse. Such a beautiful sight and I know mom and foal will be well cared for.

Reintje is beppe :)) Weee Love Reintje. Milk shower on the new-born colt Wouter-Rein :) I think Geertje had a gasket failure, and Wouter wasn't taking advantage of the life's hack :) Completely adorable, sweet. Wouter-Tiger!
