I'm from Newburgh. Grew up there in the 80's. still go back as much as I can.My fondest memories come from living there and still have many people there that I love. I have walked these streets without a care and will always consider Newburgh home. Yeah it has fallen on hard times which is a shame, but I will always love and miss this city.

My mother was visiting the Hudson valley back in 1998. She asked:" please take me to Broadway in Newburgh. The shops we're so beautiful when Dad and I visited in 1957." I mentioned "Mama the area has drastically changed. I'll drive you there if you REALLY want to go but it's dangerous". Upon the approach on to Broadway, Mama burst into tears as though she lost an old friend. Through the tears Mama stated: When did this happen and why?! This was so beautiful". If Park Slope Brooklyn could see a revival SO can Newburgh NY.

I grew up in Newburgh, Animal rescued me from a bar (Keg and Kettle) when I was 14, and I should not have been there. He made me leave, made me tea, gave me a book and took me home.

I grew up in Queens and moved to Newburgh in 1973. After I lost my job in 1975, we moved to Virginia and never looked back. Getting out of Newburgh was one of the best moves my wife and I made. There no jobs there and the city was deteriorating.

Really nice job on this Mark. I remember you from NFA, I was class of '70. And I could almost swear I remember someone called Animal from back around then too (?). I knew an Eillean Hughes in school. Animal's sister maybe. At any rate even though I'm only a 20 min ride from Newburgh I very rarely go there. It just makes me too depressed/mad to see what's left of my old hometown.

Last I know of there wasn't even a grocery store there. It is a food desert, transportation by Bus is nearly non existent. It is more of a ghetto for profit prison for the poor there and a dumping ground for NYC ande Orange County. People with nicer homes don't support most businesses that try to make it but stay to themselves. This is a city that eats itself alive. This video should have included the horrible conditions most people there live in with their slumlords.

I see a city with an incredible opportunity. They need to do what they did in the city back then. Sell the vacated homes for cheap to people that can fix the homes. Tax payers will bring income and so on.

Newburgh is a smaller replica of Niagara Falls. Like Newburgh, Niagara Falls had its downtown eviscerated by careless, hapless urban renewal. Political corruption was rampant. Infrastructure was deteriorating, crime was increasing and deindustrialization was underway. It is quite evident that Newburgh just like Niagara Falls were both sold a lousy bag of goods known as urban redevelopment plans and visions that never came true. Instead both these cities and most other older northern US cities would lose a huge chunk of tax base thanks to urban renewal and new highways. The loss of this valuable downtown tax base would plunge many cities into fiscal crisis which meant reduced public services which in turn sped up middle class flight from these cities.

Newark Nj had a similar fate. The old Italian downtown around st. Lucy's was demolished for "projects",vertical slums surrounded by abandoned houses and dead cars. Then they built a six laner Rt. 21. Its a racetrack out of town.

Many of the images were scanned from a book called "Newburgh: Her Institutions, Industries ad Leading Citizens" The book was originally published in 1891, but then reissued 100 years later in 1991. I am sure the Newburgh Free Library can help you find and scan the pictures from this book that you like.. Good luck (and sorry for the absurdly long delay in responding to your comment).

The sad reality is that if things were just a tad bit better in NYS, namely our leadership in Albany, then a city such as this one could be benefiting immensely from the masses currently escaping the high costs of living & rising crime in NYC. Especially with the increase in wifi bandwidth now available and thus granting more and more people the ability to work remotely & raise a family, etc. A grand opportunity for NYS as a whole, but no. Sadly our governor is busy killing the elderly & disabled, and groping every skirt within arms reach instead. Lovely.

This was heartbreaking to watch, but I felt I had to do it. I was a child in the 50's and remember when urban renewal tore down the buildings in the Water Street neighborhood - deteriorated apartments and historic stores and all. It was frightening to see! I've heard a lot of stories about corrupt politicians, landlords, business owners and city workers during that time period. However, there is a growing sense of pride developing in Newburgh. There are pockets of regrowth, restoration and new businesses. SUNY Orange campus is beautiful on lower Broadway. There is a wonderful district of artists and lovely shops. Quite a few good small restaurants, the Newburgh Brewery, a beautiful riverfront of places to eat (and dance). Drive the historic areas and see the gorgeous homes restored or in process. Don't give up on it.

Too late to do anything for Newburgh. If Stewart Airport was built up to be the Airport Rockefeller wanted it to be, with trains from NYC to Maybrook, the build up from passenger and cargo would have made money for the surrounding areas. BUSINESSES would have profited greatly. Closed minded! politicians! and citizens! of area shut everything down. LOST OUT ON THAT PORTION OF IMPROVING, CREATING ECONOMICS AND WEALTH FOR AREA.
