I have vivid memories of the mall being packed with shoppers during the 1980 - 1992 holiday seasons. It reminded me of a scene out of National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation: music playing, wall-to-wall people, and lines of people waiting to have their gifts wrapped. A trip to the Newburgh Mall - during my teen years - was just as exciting for me as going to the beach, a baseball game, or a movie. A meal at the Ground Round (with free servings of popcorn); a visit to Walden Books to read baseball books, an Reese's Pieces ice cream sundae from Friendly's, and then scouring through the shelves of games and action figures at Kaybee (KB) toys was something that I always looked forward to. When I wasn't actively shopping, I would sit on one of benches and people watch. I worked at EB Games (before Gamestop took it over) for a while, and went to the florist to buy flowers for Mother's Day; rented my tux for my proms there; and even did some banking there. I am stunned by the suddenness of shifts in cultural behavior over the last forty years, but remain thankful to have experienced the mall phenomena.

As a Newburgh resident of over 20 years, I can confirm this is basically a dead mall. Unless you need shoes or a cell phone case, there's nothing in that mall you can't get elsewhere

There was a Friendlys restaurant in there, a Cvs, a Caldor, a Bank, game room arcade, dentist, Kay Jewlers, Howlands, Sears and so many other store fronts, now looks like they walled some of that off. My old stumping grounds sort of speak back in the day. There also was a Ground Round restaurant. Its sad to see what happened to this Mall. Also Kay Bee toys was in there along with Cosmos Pizza.

I was a kid of the late 80s and 90s in Orange County. I remember coming here and to the Middletown Galleria a lot. We usually came to Sears and Caldors there. If you're up for some more malls in this area, I'd invite you to come check out the Shops at Nanuet. It was previously the Nanuet Mall which was bought out by Simon Properties and converted to an outdoor mall. There's an old Sears building and tire center still there from the original mall. Now the main floor of the Sears building is a home decor store which is a front for the shipping and logistics company out of the back. The Sears tire center is just abandoned. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this and the state of the Palisades Mall down the road from there which is currently in foreclosure.

The At Home store is where Macy’s used to be. I think a low budget furniture store took over Sears. I warned my Manager that we were getting shut down, the day I picked up the call from Mall Management that surveyors were coming to our Sears Auto Center. He said “ don’t worry we’re the top sellers in the district”. Later that afternoon he gathered all us together to give us the bad news. That same day Macy’s announced they were leaving. I was back in Rockland this past Thanksgiving. It’s still like a knife in my heart to see that abandoned building. I remember when they used to sell gas. I’m now retired living by a Florida beach and loving it.

This is the mall closest to me! Used to have much more life in it, and I'm continually surprised that it remains open. The casino has revived the mall a bit, but not by much. From what I can tell everyone who goes to the casino stays in the casino, and it isn't doing the rest of the mall any favors. Can't blame 'em since all the good places to shop are gone. 2:13 This was indeed an FYE, and was the kind that actually had aisles worth of CDs and DVDs instead of just collectable Hot Topic style fluff 2:06 There used to be a pretzel and hot dog kiosk in the center area (was possibly a Pretzelmaker?) 4:11 Chilitos used to be The Ground Round restaurant roughly 10 years ago 4:37 The "Exotic Clouds" smoke shop is fairly recent, and used to be home to several other stores, one of them being Zales (if I remember correctly) 5:54 The small empty place on the right next to the pizza shop used to be a GameStop 8:45 You are correct about there being stores in that area. I can't remember what they were for the life of me. Think they've been gone at least 8-10 years. The glasses place mentioned was a Sterling Optical, near one of the entrances (thought it was the one closest to Sears but I might be wrong). The shops lasting the longest here have been Office Depot (incredible, don't know how), Bath and Body Works, Claire's, the pizza place, and the shoe stores. The classic car exhibits are definitely recent, first time I saw them was when I visited last month. Great video!

The “Lerner” store front at the mall was a chain of clothing stores that stretched across the U.S. until they were rebranded to “Lerner New York” in 92 and then rebranded to “New York and Company” in 2004. Nice video!

Welcome to the Newburgh Floor as I like to call it... haha! I've lived here in Orange County my entire life. Sadly, the Newburgh Mall has declined tremendously over the years. I am still surprised to see it open with the few stores and small businesses it has left. Where the entire strip at the end near Sears and Personal Touch used to be was Walden Books back in the day. My mother and I used to go there all the time and spend a few hundred dollars on books. There also used to be an arcade and I do remember going to Caldors all the time. Are you from this area? I saw your video about the Kingston Mall as well and that mall is just as depressing. I love that you're visiting dying malls... keep it up!!! Newburgh used to not be as busy as it is now. I love that you also do your research about the malls, too! Makes your videos rather interesting. Keep up with the great content!!

I could write a dissertation on the Hudson Valley changes. In the 1970's the Hudson Valley was still an isolate area not impacted by NYC. You had regional malls in Middletown (Orange Plaza), Newburgh Mall, Mid-Hudson Mall and Shorts Hills Mall in Wappingers Falls. In the late 70's early 80's NYC wealth started to encroach and become a commuter hotbed. People with money that wanted to shop higher end brands and didn't think twice about traveling to Danbury CT, White Plains, or Garden State Plaza, NJ to shop. So Malls like Orange Plaza, Middletown, Newburgh Mall, Mid-Hudson Mall and Short Hills Mall which offered the same standard stores such as Spencer's, Orange Julice, Walden Books and Thom McCann couldn't compete. What did happen was new malls opened Poughkeepsie Galleria, Crystal Run Galleria, Garden State Plaza became bigger and more high end, and Palisades were built with higher end stores which became the death blow to the Mid-Hudson regional malls. There is one additional factor and that is Woodbury Common, the largest Premium Outlet in the world, with direct bus service from NYC, It is the most famous shopping outlet in the world. I won't get into the politics of Albany trying to save Newburgh and its mall with the casino license as it was a stupid decision. To your question, Yes Newburgh Mall is dead.

I'll do my best here. Looking from the entrance you came in, at the junction with the casino at your back: - Casino space was, as you said, Caldor's, then Bon-Ton. 0:49 on left - To your right with the brick was Ruby Tuesday's. 1:00 - Next stall up on the right was Kay-Bee Toys. 1:34 - On the left I think an optometrist. 1:34 - Somewhere in that area, in one of the entrances, was a gift shop. (1:08 on right?) - Farther up on the left bast the optometrist was a dollar store. 1:30 - Past the Kay-Bee, I think, was The Gap. Ironically still a gap, just a different kind... (1:37 right) - Past that, what's now a Jimmy Jazz was once a Payless. - Across from the Payless was, I think, Walden Books. I might be wrong on that placement. There was definitely a Walden books on that left wall somewhere though. Most recently I believe it was a Christian bookstore. 1:56 - Pamela's Express was a Pretzel Time. 1:47 - Beyond Payless with the triangle marquee, FYE 2:17 - The Motorcyclepedia booth was a jewelry store I believe. Kay Jewelers? 2:32 - The smoke shop was a candy store at one point, and may have been a Disney store for a hot minute. 2:47 right - As you said, the Track 23 was an Old Navy. 4:02 - The Chilitos was a Ground Round. 4:23 - Moving up a bit, the pizza place was Cosmo's. 5:42 - Past the pizza place was Game Stop / Software etc. 5:53 right - Past the Game Stop was Olympia Sports. 7:01 - Past that in the Martial Arts space was a sort of variety discount store where you could buy things like cassette tapes and school supplies. 7:10 right - Across from that, near the GNC was (I think) a shoe store? 6:30 right - GNC was a Radio Shack. 6:57 - Somewhere down on that side, to the left, was the arcade. It was quite small. 7:15 maybe? - The areas to the left of Sears had been walled off for as long as I can remember, at least since the mid 90s. - And, of course, Sears. - Somewhere in the parking lot was (maybe still is) a McDonald's. That's more or less how I remember it, but keep in mind that this was through the lens of a child and I may have misplaced some things. Final note: before the more modern motif you see inside, the mall once had a very 80s neon motif, but it's been at least 25 years since they changed that.

It was the store just past Mister Pizza. Track 23 was Old Navy as I remembered it. Champs has been there forever it feels like. My family also came to Sears back in the day for appliances. I was surprised to see any people in the mall to be honest. I would consider it a dead mall. My wife didn’t even know it was still open until I showed her this video. I moved to Orange County in the early 2000's and even back then this mall was in the decline. In the 2010's, the land right across the street from the mall started being cleared and the rumor was that an outdoor mall was going to be built there with Costco being one of the anchors. But I suppose with the decline in brick and mortar stores, the plans for another mall fell through. Construction for four warehouses on the site just recently completed, with Tesla signing on to two of the four buildings.

The casino just opened either earlier this year or at the end of last year. For what's it's worth, it has brought a lot of life back into the mall. The parking lot right in front of the casino always appears to be full. I have heard that the mall owner is planning on building a covered parking garage in the back side of the mall right behind the casino to accommodate additional parking. The downside to the casino (asides from the ills associated with gambling) is that the casino has no restaurant associated with it. From what I heard, the plan is that the casino owner wants to attract other restaurants to come and set up shop in the mall.

This mall died around 2015 horribly as more and more stores began to close and the surrounding area got poorer and poorer. Sad fate, and I think the Casino kind of cements that eventually it will take over the whole thing one day.

Reminds me of Broadway Commons here on Long Island which is a dying mall which is closer to being a dead mall. Though Broadway has a Target and Ikea, they don't bring much foot traffic into the mall and it's hard to consider them anchors. Once Macy's (formerly Sterns, and Gertz) closed in 2020 the mall's fate was sealed.

Honestly if most of the stores leave, the mall has the opportunity to turn itself into a resort for the casinos with shops and restaurants to match. Based on other casinos/resorts I've seen, although I'm not sure if zoning laws could allow for that.

Bon Ton actually stretched from NY/PA in the east to the Dakotas in the west and as far south as West Virginia. They essentially did the opposite of Macy’s where they kept their regional nameplates in favor of a unified brand. The chain went bankrupt in 2018. As for the mall? I’d lean dead. As proactive as it was to get Resorts World in there, it doesn’t seem to be benefiting the other tenants. Although frankly I’m honestly surprised the casino isn’t considered an anchor.

@fleabittenadventures Clearly a dying mall, not necessarily a dead mall yet. Dying: Low but not negligible foot traffic, anchors dwindled to 1 or 0, only things bustling are food court or nothing Dead: Not keeping lights on/dark corners, leaky roof, homeless sleeping inside => negligible safety/foot traffic I would suggest that a dying mall could still do something to revive with some capital infusion. The antique car displays are a fair shot but you could also do raffles for coupons to remaining stores, central playground for small kids, etc. which might eventually help build traffic back up.

The casino seems to be the first part of a potential rebound. Owners have other plans in place like a renovation, new dining options, reopening the library, and bringing in a new tenant in the former Sears.

Do 1 on the fish kill mall not far from Newburg. It died About 20 years ago. has a Home Depot and McDonald’s and a bank left the bank and McDonald’s are in the parking lot but really wasn’t a part of the mall. A lot was torn down but the old grocery store is still standing in the far end. I forgot that was the anchor store and I’ll be damned if I can remember what it was I think the sine could still make it out. There was another anchor on the other end, and I forget what that was. And there was a ace hardware in there for ever but now it’s all gone except for Home Depot, which was not there when they tore it down, they built up the Home Depot.

It’s a dying mall. Too many closed stores and no anchor stores. The local mall near me has Nordstrom, Macys Women’s Store, Macys Men’s Store, Macys Home Store, and a large Old Navy. Those are anchor stores not Office Depot. So sad seeing so many malls going away. So far that hasn’t been the case in my neck of the woods. Malls are doing well and a few new ones popped up and they are doing well. I guess it also depends on demographics. I live in an affluent part of California and people like to shop it appears 🤷🏼‍♀️

All malls are dead. I remember back in the prime of malls, they were bustling with people at all hours of the day, they were warm, cozy, had greenery, and personality. Now... malls are cold empty shells, most of which have been reduced to community centers. Check out the Jefferson Valley Mall in Yorktown Heights if you haven't already...

You should come to The Poughkeepsie Galleria, or to the other place that used to be called South Hills Mall, tht's right next door to the Galleria that i just mentioned. I was there recently taking pictures of the backside of the building for a photo spread called. Urban Desolation.

I have been back to the Poughkeepsie Galleria this year and it sadly has become a dying mall. I was there at 5:00 PM on a Friday and you barely walked by another person during the whole length but the food court was fairly busy. The only original locations that remain are Taco Bell and the Japanese place. There was a deli next to the Japanese place that was there from the beginning and survived for so many years until around 2015. The South Hills Mall no longer exists as a mall. It flipped inside out to where it is outdoor entrance stores like Bob's Furniture, The Christmas Store, Hobby Lobby, etc.

@@markmcnary1785 I mentioned the Dutchess Mall in another comment for this video. We went there occasionally during the 1980s to go to the arcade and KayBee Toys. There isn't much left as it was demolished to make room for Home Depot. Yes, I drove in the parking lot last year to take photos to show the abandoned structure that used to be Service Merchandise and dead shops to the left of it where one was a liquor store. Lost and gone forever.

The Middletown Galleria mall was on the decline as well, but it seems to have reinvented itself. Rather than relying solely on retail, it is trying to turn itself into an entertainment destination. They added a Round One (arcade with bowling, pool tables, karaoke), added a kid's adventure playground, which was ground floor of the old Sears store (a Gold's Gym takes the second floor). There is also word that the mall owner is working on building condos and apartments next door to the mall in the future as well.

With the monstrous property tax in NY, even with tax breaks, it's hard to figure how these empty malls have survived as long as they have. They will fall in the hands of the taxman eventually if not repurposed quickly. That casino is very unusual, and hope it works out.
