In its heyday, not one but two major railways served the seaside resort - surely that would guarantee its future? Sadly not.

I remember going to Newcastle on the BCDR and the last time was on the GNR line, just before it closed. Thanks for all your videos!

In September 1951 my parents and another family rented a Newcastle holiday home in an 8 house cul-de-sac right beside the railway. We kids used to watch the GNR trains arriving & departing, and also the steam engines on the turntable being pushed around by the driver & fireman. On one accasion we skipped across the rails to give the 2 men a hand, for which our parents became very upset.

Enjoying your videos Richard, I also think the Scarva to Newcastle line is one railway that would be worth bringing back as you could get a train from Belfast to Newcastle again.

100% agree. It annoys me you can get to Portrush but not Newcastle by train. The line would be a golfer's and hiker's paradise

Hello Richard, greetings from fellow BCDR enthusiast from Saintfield. Did you know that the remains of a turntable which existed at the end of a long siding running from Castlewellan Station into Corry Wood are still present? I found the circular emplacement myself a few years ago. The council have recently created a pleasant circular walk through the wood which crosses the former Newcastle-bound line in two places. They also cleared the cutting itself a bit, making it easier to walk along. Happy Hunting! Daniel

A bygone era of golfing by train on a Saturday to Royal Co Down GC and perhaps a meal in The Slieve Donard to follow.

Was the old Donard Lodge - demolished in 1966 - ever filmed? is there any programs/forgotten pictures or filmed records of the Newcastle drama group - known as the N.A.D.S

Hi, Richard, I have always been intrigued …. what is the derivation of the station names ‘Marino’ and ‘Adelaide’?

None in the immediate future, but I have Portadown pencilled in as it was once the three way junction to Dungannon and Armagh as well as Dublin

@@trainscranesandtrivialtale7262 Look forward to seeing that. I own the fire surround from Dungannon Station, which just so happens to be made from a piece of track.

Very interesting little documentary. Where is the location of the photo at 3:28? Also enjoyed the Dundrum video.
