I'm from London but I heard that the dislike between Newcastle and Sunderland as cities goes back to long before either of the football teams existed. Apparently the dislike started during the English civil war and the era of the Stuarts, the Jacobites and so on - I'm not sure which order those three things happened, but a lot of the issues today date back to those days.
