This was a very sad video watch . Me and my mates visited the Kard Bar from 1980 onwards . I spent a lot of time in there looking at the Vinyl records and looking at the badges etc ,we bought patchouli by the bucket load. I loved chatting to Brian, he was a lovely guy , R.I.P. Thanks for posting this.

That arcade was part of my teenage best years on a Saturday with me friends . The memories make me feel a deep loss for my past ,and for our lost city ,that has long gone ,and doesn't even look like our town anymore. And needles to say hardly a northern face around now 😢😢😢😢

@@colinthegeordiehistorian10you agree with what, exactly? That it "doesn't feel like our town anymore" ? What exactly is that supposed to mean?
@zeddeka2 ай бұрын
@@da90sReAlvloceveryone says that about the decade they were kids in. A lot of the 80s was actually seriously grim, but being naive children we were sheltered from it all.

I used to kick around here and other parts of the city centre, often waiting for the pubs to open before a gig at the City Hall, 78 to 83 was may time then I moved to Manchester to live and work for some 6/7 years, I hadn't been in the city centre for some time and came back to find the Haymarket pub, Farmers Rest both gone, the Mayfair a hole in the ground and the City Tavern an Italian Restaurant.

Loved being in the Kard Bar in the mid to late seventies. Used to get my posters, patches and badges from there. Got the threads for my jacket from John Lewis’s, though! Very sad end for Brian, the owner, who died when the shop it moved to burned down! His son had taken it on, but his father, lived upstairs where he died. 😓

Cracking wee arcade that Colin, can see why it was called the Carnaby of the North 😃 Love how the shop owner talked about a the kids coming from far and wide! Imagine if they were still here today...

Fantastic video, Colin, with powerful accompanying music. So many fond memories of Saturdays with friends, hanging out in the Handyside. Browsing in the Kard Bar, searching for unique clothes in Fynd & secretly swooning over the jeweller in Fagleman's. How sad it was demolished, but they can't take our memories away......

I went there a lot in the sixties,Colin,and went to the Club a GoGo regularly.I am a musician,and everyone went to Burman shop.My mate got an Afghan coat from there,but it stank,when it got wet !!!!!!! Very silly of the council to demolish,same as the Mayfair,and replace with the the soulless"Gate".Everything is geared towards poseurs nowadays !!!! Nothing has any soul !!!!! They wanted to close the City Hall as well..

Great video again Colin. Brings back memories of family trips into Newcastle mainly Christmas shopping. My dad liked going there for dog stuff . I can remember going in but not what shops were in there. When I first started going into Newcastle in the late 80s I tried looking for the arcade , not knowing it had been knocked down and. Thanks for sharing the video Mate.

Great memories of visiting the Handyside Arcade in the late 70’s early 80’s. Bought many a poster at the Kard Bar….mainly my Zeppelin posters! Me and my fellow band members frequented here then onto Windows on a Saturday afternoon. Brilliant memories 🤘

I used to love the Handyside Arcade and remember the Kard Bar. There was also a pet shop with a grumpy ginger cat, this would be early 1980s. I left school in 1982 aged 18. Shame it was demolished, I reckon it just needed a lick of paint, covered shopping areas are a good idea in our unpredictable climate. The sloping walkway gave the place character too, I don't know what building now stands in the arcade's place.

In the early seventies I worked at the Halfords on Percy Street.Our canteen was on the upper level inside the arcade, opposite the Kard bar........basically above Fynd.Break times were spent looking over the top at the people below with a savaloy dip or pork sandwich from the shop a few doors down (on Percy St).A lot of the units on the top level were filled with women on sewing machines making clothes (M& S I was told but not sure on that one).Happy days for me!

I saw the pet shop in there had a big jar of hemp seed ,presumably for bird feed , I told my student mates about it and within days it was all sold out. The seed was supposed to be sterile but it was quickly planted all over the place in the toon and I know some of it grew though to what effect I couldn't say. I also remember being in the Kard Bar and some French kids were in and got excited seeing a poster of "Jeanne d'Arc". I had a great psychedelic poster called Zonk from the Kard Bar.
