At the beginning I say 1954, which of course is impossible. Please ignore that linguistic faux pas, I meant to say 1854, which I state later on. 👍🏻

In the early 1960’s my Mother worked in an office next to Bessie Surtees House, which is now all the same building. She worked on the 3rd floor, the rest of the upper floors were empty. I used to explore the old building on Saturday mornings when she was working by herself. Behind it was a very narrow medieval back lane or street, which could be accessed through a pub yard at the bottom of Dean Street. There is a bit of a cliff face there with ancient steps leading part way up, you can probably still see them from the Moot Hall car park. I was about 12 years old, and totally fascinated with the buildings. The upper floors had not been converted to offices, so we’re still as they were originally. The Company She worked for was Foy, Morgan and Company, they were Timber shipping agents. Later moved into Exchange Buildings.

I enjoyed that thanks, I'm a Mackem but am interested in all North East history and have learnt a couple of things there. Sadly our own town council(s) in Sunderland through the years have managed to obliterate almost all of our historic buildings, Newcastle hasn't suffered quite as badly thankfully. The Crown Posada, by the way, is a great bar!

The Quayside...this takes me back. When I lived in Newcastle in the early 80's this was a favourite haunt. We'd start our drinking in the Crown Posada, then the Red House and then go on to The Cooperage if there was a band on (Arthur 2 Stroke and The Chart Commandos for preference) otherwise we'd go up to The Baltic pub (not the arts centre which was still an empty warehouse). Occasionally we'd go on the Tuxedo Princess nightclub boat but I preferred Tuxedo Junction in the town. I can still remember some old, derelict wharfs near the site where the Millennium Bridge is now sited...there was a sign there which said "Trespassers who are not drowned will be prosecuted ". Happy days.

Hi Eddie I think the manager of the Crown Posada told me once that it used to have windows all the way down one side of the building but they blew out during the war so they bricked the holes up and then put all the mirrors on the wall to create light. Might have got the story mixed up after a couple of pints though 🙂

I love the history of Newcastle. You should do an hour long documentary, or even longer if needed, detailing the history of the city. You could use old photos and show how much things have changed over the years. I was amazed watching a film called Payroll. It’s crazy how much the world has changed in 50 years and it is almost terrifying to imagine where it could be in another 50…
@TynesideLife
@TynesideLife 2 жыл бұрын
I agree, the world is changing rapidly! I’ve no plans to do a long video like you mention as there’s no advantage for me to put everything into one video. Breaking it all down into bite size chunks keeps my viewers engaged and helps the channel grow. Thanks for the message 👍🏻

So true. If somebody offered me the chance to look through a view finder showing what life will be like in 50 years time...i`d refuse to look. Its mad that we live in a world where cash is a nuisance to companies, I agree that Eddie could do an hour long doc detailing all the history of the city

Interesting to note only one person died during the construction of the bridge.. mad when you look at the old photos/footage of the blokes shimmying their way along beams with no safety gear, just flat caps and tweed jackets! Also with the great fire, I read that large debris was blown 3/4 of a mile away and it was heard as far away as Hartlepool!

Great video, always thought Crown Pasarda was the oldest pub in Newcastle so learnt something there.

Definitely the George inn. The confusion comes from a tongue in cheek claim that the George Inn was a coaching inn and not ‘technically’ a pub back in the day. It’s not a serious claim. Of course Pasada is Spanish for ‘Inn’

@@TynesideLife great stuff, never knew about the fire on the quayside. My dad was involved with the working of some of the bridges during the 80s. Always nice to look at for personal reasons.

@7:08 you can see the Offshore bar. One of my favorite bars ever. The Quilted Camel was equally as good as well, right next door. People don't realize that the quayside was THE place to be. The earth is 4.5 billion years old. How lucky was I to be have my youth at the same time as the quaysides heyday.

@@TynesideLife Actually, there was a rumor going around back in the day, not sure if it’s true, that David Ginolas wife wouldn’t let him frequent the Quayside unless she was there with him. Brilliant times.

Offshore 44 one of my favorite places and memories of Newcastle, ......driving up overnight from the Midlands, with my Whitley Bay Princess, ........lunchtime 'stotties' and feeling the world opening up at our feet ! Missing those days.

Eddy I love the history. Looking forward to the video about Cesar visiting the Tyne. I also have a future video request for you. Can you make a list of must see places for a foreigner’s first trip to Newcastle? I’m hoping to plan a trip there for next year and go to my first match in person! ⚫️⚪️

great video of the area . but you missed out on the scotswood bridge between newcastle and gateshead . you may also want to look into the history of the building on the newcastle side of the swing bridge. it was a morgue once upon a time. keep up the great work as i really enjoy the history of newcastle

Thanks Anne, glad you like them 🙏🏻 I was just focussing on the bridges classically associated with the Quayside area. I think there’s 26 bridges all told, including footbridges. Yeah, there’s plenty of fascinating buildings and lots for me to cover 😃

We LOVE the Crown Posada...a few years ago after going on a record shop tour/ buying spree, we popped in and the barman said we could play our Vinyl Records once the owld regulars had listened through theirs that were lined up....p.s: have you had a Pie, peas & mash from the Red House Pub near to the Bessie Surtees building?
