There has been problems with drives here but most only blow when a/c is being used , the one that keeps causing problems I moved the drive for inside to outside above heat section to back wall in with the condenser fans were the drive would have a cover and not get rain on , praying 🙏 for the family and little men

Put a contactor in for the blower. Three pole , 30 amp , 24 volt lug type. On the main board there is a molex plugged into a terminal called control board. The number 7 wire is grey and the number 5 wire is brown. Tap into those 2 wires for 24 volts for blower contactor.

Next time you go back, check each wire to ground on the incoming power and see if you have a stinger. They may have to put a different transformer into the building or just convert it to a contactor style on the indoor fan. Nice video

Took almost a year for us to get the last drive I did. Our supply house told me that Carrier is moving away from those ABB drives due to long lead times.

I'd be careful the motor isn't a problem. Ive worked on thise many times and the motor was also an issue. Had motors that were megging bad. They will eat up drives/fuses.

Use the economizer for free cooling if you can get the blower running.

Those drives are junk, shouldn't be in the blower section, in my opinion.
@georgebrabec1749 Жыл бұрын
Those drives are programed 40 htz cooling and 60 htz heating. I have several go bad on different Carrier RTU's. I replsced the drive with a starter overload combination. Motor has no protection otherwise. 2021 RTU, but the cobdenser coil isn't micro-channel ? That is all we see in Houston

Might want to look at the buildings electrical. From what you described their business is they may be over taxing the electrical panel and causing some of these problems on the electrical side. The refrigerant leak is totally a manufacturer defect. I just installed a rtu last week with “ V-Line “ blower assembly. Rather a cool idea, unit is designed like a turbine and you dial in the speed and amp draw on a separate board in the control panel. It is an ICP unit so I imagine Carrier is using it as well. Maybe they have realized these drives are a bust.👍🇨🇦

Another issue which I see is where the manufacturer is mounting the Drives. I always see them fail more often when they are in a non neutral area….

Sad state that a 2 yr.old unit is basically shot.

There are some people in the comment section here that are concerned about the building electrical system, and the blower motors themselves, and my experience suggests that neither of those are causal factors……and the drives are just plain junk.

Your totally right on this unit.the quality has gone down the tubes carrier disgrace me.they had great units back in the day. I hate that government stuck there business on eco ( less power consumption on evaporator motors.burns my arse

Holy balls man.. I'm pissed for you. That's just unacceptable. 10s of thousands of $$ for a company to purchase, and double that for what a customer is paying. And why aren't they trying to make any improvements to these designs? They're built to fail these days. Just think if engineers listened to techs....

The board in the middle sends communication to the VFD to tell it run at 50 or 100%. Carriers VFDs will FAIL, 100% within a year. Its in a poor location. They even put bypass connections because maybe they know something 🧐. If your customer wants, get rid of the VFD and place a contactor and look for a grey wire from the IFB connected to that middle board. Thats G 24V.

That sucks. And they only come with a 1/1 warranty. Customer paying for this? I’d try to have carrier pay the bill.

No you had it right those ABB drives are junk…just take it out and put in a contactor and be done with it

ABB drives, they don’t survive cold weather. Also all the manufacturers have to address the condenser coil issues, coils are failing everywhere from what I’ve been experiencing.
@leviweltin1163 Жыл бұрын
York units are especially bad. Aluminum micro channeled coils are like leak city. 🤢
@10minutenewhampshirebreak77 Жыл бұрын
@@leviweltin1163 yeah, I’m not thrilled about this I have a customer with a trane rtu on it’s third coil in four years. It sucks because they think I’m doing something wrong. I have way better things to do than replace condenser coils on rtus.

@@10minutenewhampshirebreak77 Yeah, the only thing we can do with this cheap junk is to double down on our preventative maintenance and limit the repairs we can prevent. 😬😏

Too bad these air conditioning units didn't have an OBD port, like in a car. So, you could scan the computer system and didn't have to deal with blinking lights.

I mean they invented those newfangled liquid crystal displays. And even a $5 microcontroller can display stuff on there. But that's out of budget for US customers, i guess. I mean I can get a smartwatch shipped from china with a color screen, for $10, which includes a screen and bluetooth radio. But looking at the integration in these units, it's pretty obvious they don't want to spend any money and do the minimum. Why don't they use a custom VFD solution that can actually handle the environment for a start. No VFD on either condensor fans or compressors, a $300 bottom of the barrel Chinese Midea heatpump has most of those problems sorted.
@hardies1 Жыл бұрын
Actually I could see that that unit had a Honeywell controller on it that should be able to display any errors that have occurred and also allow you to configure and test different functions of the RTU. From what I have seen in previous videos though, I don't think Joe knows how to run those controllers and so he pretty much ignores them.
