Number 19: Steve Smith survived an odd appeal after a massive gust of wind blew the bails off during the BBL finals between the Melbourne Stars and Sydney SIxers at the MCG in 2020. Commentator Shane Warne feared Smith had been dismissed by hitting his wicket as Melbourne Stars bowler Haris Rauf celebrated with teammates. But Smith immediately gestured to the umpire, claiming he did not know how the bails came off. “I think he might have stepped on it,” Warne said. “Nah it’s the wind blowing across the ground,” commentator Mark Howard clarified.

You might like to look up Phillip Hughes who sadly passed away after taking a bouncer to the back of the neck, He has been gone for 10 years as from the 6th December. A tribute was held for him. He was only 25 and was the most amazing batsman. He hit bowlers from every direction and always found the gap. A wonderful lovely young man who passed far too soon.

Batting left and right handed. One of the up and coming stars of the Australian women's Cricket team (Currently playing India in a series of 3 50 over ODI matches) is Phoebe Litchfield who played field hockey when she was younger as well as cricket and this experience allows her to switch hands almost at will. It is quite something to see.

In cricket you have a bat and you can move around the crease side to side and forward and back, you don't have to stay in a 'batter's box'. As such if you get hit by the ball it's your fault, no penalty to the bowling side. The bowlers, particularly fast bowlers, will often bowl balls specifically at the batter (known as Bouncers) to unsettle them. There is usually a restriction on how many you can bowl an over but they are a legitimate delivery. Mind you when these big angry buggers are bowling the damn thing at close to a 150-160 KPH you have to be quick to get out of the way and there have been many injuries and sadly some deaths when a batter has been hit. RIP Phil Hughes.

#8. Switching between left and right-handed batting is a big deal in cricket. The field setup is usually based on whether the batter is left or right-handed, with all fielding positions mirrored accordingly. If a batter switches mid-delivery, the field might not have time to adjust, creating an advantage. It’s part of cricket’s unwritten rules. Before every delivery, the umpire informs the batter about the bowler's side and handedness. Batters rarely switch sides, which is why it was such a big deal when Joe Root did it!

If the batter's body is hit by the bowled ball and the umpire rules that it would have otherwise hit the wicket then it is LBW, Leg Before Wicket, and the batter is ruled to be out. Generally this means that the ball must hit the batter's pad below the knee-roll before an umpire would consider an LBW. There is also a designated lane that does vary a little between the different forms of the game where the ball from a bowler must pass or else it is a no-ball which means an automaric point or run for the batting team and an extra ball to be bowled in that over. This is to strongly discourage bowlers from just bowling the balls away from the wicket stumps and out of the normal reach of a batsman to reduce the run-rate and thus the final score. If a bowled ball strikes a batsman outside of the designated lane it is still a no-ball, although in most plays batsmen are strongly discouraged from catching or handling the ball when it is in play. Thus a batsman cannot play at or strike at a ball twice in one bowl, or deliberately try to cover, shield, or prevent a fielder from handling a struck ball. If the bowled ball strikes the body/pad first then the bat it may be LBW, if the ball glances the bat first then the pad then it is not LBW, but if the ball strikes the bat and then while moving to the stumps is stopped by the seen deliberate action of blocking it or kicking it with a batter's pad or shoe then the batter may be dismissed for interfering with a ball in play.

#2 The batter has a lot of power. A bowler cant start their run up unless the batter is in position. If something happens and a batter isnt ready, they can step away and let the bowler know they arnt ready. Behind the bowler is a large white screen, so the batter can see the bowlers arm clearly. Without the screen the bowlers arm and the ball would blend into the background crowd etc. Sometimes people walk infront of the screen and it distracts the batter, so they step away until the vision is clear. There is a rule that a batter can go out if they handle the ball. This rule is to stop a batter trying to catch a ball if its being thrown in for a run out etc. However in this case, the batter stepped away as they werent ready but was called out for touching the ball. Therefore the ump declared it a dead ball

#19: The wind blew the bails off: no out. You can go out "hit wicket" if you knock the wicket with your body or any part of your equipment (say, if your helmet fell off and hit the wicket) and the bail is dislodged. This is a rare way of going out. In this case, Steve Smith did not hit the wicket. #14 would have been out hit wicket because the batsman lost control of his bat which would have hit the wicket if the wicket keeper had not intervened in trying to get a stumping. #15: No ball: yes, some part of the bowler's foot must be behind the crease (the white line). If not, it is a no ball, in which case the batting team gets a run and the bowler has to bowl the ball again. #13: Catch near the boundary: Because the fielder was never grounded outside the boundary while in contact with the ball and completed the catch inside the boundary, this was out. According to the Laws of Cricket: "19.4.2 The ball in play is to be regarded as being grounded beyond the boundary if - a fielder, grounded beyond the boundary as in 19.5, touches the ball; - a fielder, after catching the ball within the boundary, becomes grounded beyond the boundary while in contact with the ball, before completing the catch." #12 This was the batsman "obstructing the field", another rare method of dismissal. #9: Sixes are not especially rare or "less preferred". It depends a bit on the form of cricket. In test cricket, batting for a long time is important, since it is a 5-day game and so you need to value your wicket and do your best not to to go out, whereas in T20 cricket, your team has only 20 overs to make a decent score (and only 20 overs for your batsmen to survive), so big hitting is more common. Having said that, if the bowler bowls a "loose" delivery (short and wide) and the batman is capable, it should be hit over the boundary. #2: "In baseball, if the batter gets hit by the ball they get an automatic walk" - The equivalent in cricket is a 'beam ball". If the bowler bowls a full toss (no bounce) that hits the batsman above the waist, it is a no ball (1 run to the batting team and bowler has to bowl the ball again). In T20 and one day international cricket, the batsman also gets a "free hit" (can't go out bowled, lbw or caught on the next ball). If it is repeated by the same bowler, he can be removed from the attack (can't bowl again in that innings). On the other hand, if the batsman stops or deflects the ball with his hand, he can be given out "handling the ball". By the way, the second day of the second test between Australia and India, in Adelaide, is about to begin. You might be able to catch it somehow (it is on Kayo Sport here, so might be available to you through Kayo). If you are coming to Australia "next summer", remember that this will be our winter. Will be cold in the south but nice in Queensland.

What happens if the batter gets hit by the ball? Best case, nothing; if he's blocking the wicket, he can be called out ("LBW"). Worst case, he gets injured or (rarely) killed. In the 1930s, Australia had a batsman named Donald Bradman who was all but unbeatable (I asked an AI what would be the baseball equivalent, it said "to achieve a similar level of dominance in baseball as Bradman did in cricket, a batter would need a career batting average of approximately .392. This is significantly higher than the highest career batting average in Major League Baseball history, which is Ty Cobb's .366. Bradman's average in cricket is so notably high that it has been suggested by statisticians that no other athlete in any major sport has matched this level of dominance over their peers"). For the 1932 "Ashes" Test match series, the English captain came up with a strategy to beat Bradman by deliberately bowling fast balls aimed at the batsman, in the hopes that he wouldn't be able to hit it an any controlled manner, but block it and they'd get him out. Someone dubbed it "Bodyline", and there's a decent TV miniseries of that name about it, with Hugo Weaving (Agent Smith from The Matrix). It's still mostly legal, but they've changed the rules to make it less effective now, and modern players wear helmets, etc.

#3 A "sweep" shot is when the player hits the ball down low and they push it 90o to pitch behind them. They look like they are "sweeping" the pitch with their bat. A "reverse sweep" is when the batter turns the bat around and hits it in a similar way, but in the opposite direction. The batter changes grip very quickly with limited time to hide their intention from the bowler. You dont see it much in test cricket, but is used a lot in T20/ODIs. Glen Maxwell from Australia is a master at hitting 4s and 6s from them. Many batters fail and go out, but when they do it well, its awesome

#19. many have already explained the wind blew the bails off, so its not out. Its rare that it happens, but the bails are only "resting" on the tops of the stumps, so a strong wind can technically cause this. If its happened then to get run out, the fielder has to have the ball in one hand and pull the stump out of the ground. Not super common but run outs can be very hectic
@suelynch
@suelynch 29 күн бұрын
Big hits are common by the batsman who know how to belt a ball. Big hits are rare in 5 day games, 50 over day/night big hits become more noticeable and in a T20 big hits happen a lot. I can't remember if it was Boone or Marsh, he belted the ball so hard that it cleared the stands and started rolling down the road/freeway outside of the cricket ground. (Granted it was the smallest ground ever. The hit was still exceptional, the ball still would have landed on a roof or in the back row of the stands in any other cricket ground.) #19 he was not out. That is what the 3rd umpire is for. It was the wind gust was so strong the stump moved causing the bail to come off. #15 The bowlers foot must be behind the line. If a batsman hit the ball and scores runs they are free runs. No batsman can be can be out as the ball was illegal. #13 As long as the fielders feet are not in contact with the ground, the ball is still in play. #2 There are penalties for deliberately targeting a batsman. The penalty might happen in the car-park after the game is over 😎unless the umpire calls it. That batsman moved away from the wicket after the bowler was fully committed and then stepped in the firing line of the ball. If the batsman had stayed at the wicket his team would have scored a minimum of 1 wide or up to 4 wide balls. Granted if the batsman hadn't put his hand up he would've worn the ball in the face, but he moved into the balls path. Those face guards won't protect against every ball.

Yes the big no ball is because part of his foot is not behind the white line... I'm not sure this is a similar analogy with baseball but the pitcher needs to be touching the rubber on the mound when he delivers the ball or it is not a legal ball yes? Similar idea. Just for further info... on a no ball the batter cannot be bowled or caught out or stumped, however the ball can be hit and scored off, if this happens the batters can be run out if they attempt a run.

Test cricket is more a test of endurance and stamina. They can play in extreme heat as it is a summer sport and Australia and India can get quite hot. Watch videos on Adam Gilchrist and Glen Maxwell. 2 big hiting Australian Batsman.

The second last one where the batsman puts up his hand and knocks the ball away, is out handled the ball ( as it says on screen), because he deliberately used his hand. In any other situation where the batsman gets hot by the ball ,it's just bad luck for him he should have used his bat.

He was not out. If you watch carefully the umpire signals a dead ball. The batsman was stepping away before the bowler delivered the ball so the delivery didn't count. The batsman is entitled to a clear view of the delivery so if something distracting happens behind the bowler, like a spectator walking in front of the big white sight screens positioned behind the bowlers hand, he can step away and reset himself. The handling of the ball didn't matter in the slightest which makes it a weird choice to include in the video.

It is not illegal to hit the batsman with the ball, with one exception, bowling a beamer (a full toss that reaches the batsman above waist height) is an illegal delivery and is penalised one run. This is not for hitting the batman it's for bowling an illegal delivery and will be penalised one run whether it hits the batsman or not. BTW you seem to have missed the point of number 3, it was remarkable NOT for being a six (yes a six not a home run) but for being a reverse sweep a somewhat rare batting strategy, I suggest you watch it again and take note of what the batsman is doing.

Being hit is no penalty UNLESS the ball meets a couple criteria the most important would have continued on to hit the stumps. This is an LBW (leg before wicket) and that's out. Additionally the hand counts as the bat so if it hits your hand and is caught on the full it's out as though you hit it on the full.

Normally the batsman is out if one of the bails is disturbed out of the groove on top of the stumps, but it only counts if a human caused it by hitting the wicket with the ball, the bat, or a body part. Gusts of wind don’t count.
@martinwhite3559
@martinwhite3559 28 күн бұрын
No. 19 is a bizarre one. The bails came off without the wickets being hit. They can check the video replay to see if anything ht the wicket. If not, then the batter is safe. Maybe a gust of wind or something knocked the bails off. Big hits are quite common. You should watch a video on biggest hits. If the batter gets hit by the ball, it hurts. It is not uncommon to get hit and no rule. We dont deliberately try to hit the batter but it is part of the game. Just watch highlights of a match first. Then watch a Twenty 20 match. Maybe the final of the Twenty 20 world cup in 2021. Australia is Currently playing a Test series with India. Australia just won the 2nd match by 10 wickets. India easily won the first match. So it is 1 win each going in to the 3rd match it is a best of 5 match series. Australia and India are the best 2 Test teams right now. Test cricket is a little different from other forms of cricket. There are currently 3 different forms of international cricket right now. Test Cricket goes back to around 1880. It was the only form of international cricket till the 1980s I think. Don't quote me on that.

Number 13, I believe it shouldn't be out, they have already left the field of play. At the very least they should have to re-enter the field of play before touching the ball again for it to be a legal catch. Number 12, the poor batsman didn't even realise the ball was at his feet, when he did, he made every effort to get out the way. Poor sportsmanship by Pollard in my mind. Number 11 is just a team meeting, talking tactics, no doubt and perhaps a bit of a gee up. Number 2. If the batsman is hit by the ball, that is their problem. There is no penalty for the opposing side, in fact one of the best batsman in the world at the time was given out LBW when he ducked what he thought was a short ball and it hit him in the shoulder or head and because he was so low the umpire deemed the ball would have hit the wicket.
@UKJesterVids

#13 - rules for boundary catches are complicated (laws 33.1, 19.4 and 19.5). First contact with the ball must be while the fielder is inside the boundary (or if last contact with the ground was inside the boundary) Later contact with the ball, for a catch, must be while the fielder is not touching the ground, but it doesn't matter whether their last contact was inside or outside. Final catch must be while the fielder is inside the boundary This means that if you touch the ball inside the boundary, you can touch it again to push it back inside as long as you're off the ground while you do it, even if you've stepped over the boundary. If you haven't touched the ball inside the boundary, you can knock the ball back as long as you haven't touched the ground outside the boundary, but if you touch the ball outside the boundary after touching the ground outside the boundary, it's a six. In this case, it's out because the fielder first caught the ball inside the boundary, then the catch and rethrow outside the boundary was while both feet were off the ground (only just)
