This is what happens when your Ministers don't recognise the name 'skilled worker' get rid of building control, apprenticeships, then demonise father and son teams, outsource, fire, health and safety, allow QS's to run the job based on the lowest price and then allow developers to hire kids fresh out of Uni and call them architects and site managers.. I could go on about insurers and many other issues, but that's just a fraction of what I can see going wrong with the building industry since returning to the UK from working overseas. Even on some of the highest end jobs. The mistakes highlighted in these video's are the same. Keep up the good work and give a shout out to the tradesmen and woman and white - blue collar workers who still take pride in their work and do a fantastic job.

You can just walk around Britain and see centuries old houses that were built by common peasants with their hands. With the level of knowledge and tech today, there's no excuse for shit like this, it can only be corruption.

Just like old architecture that 'was better', the best is preserved but the rubbish is knocked down. Though admittedly today there is little excuse. Everyone is penny pinching, so a proper builder rarely ever has a chance to do a job properly, and even if they get given the chance they don't know how to work in any other way.

@leo0626 many compromises that can be made to bring down cost one being location. Building in London compared to Inverness the difference is obviously staggering. The price of large chunk of land compared to the size of a new build development plot again staggering. But in terms of build costs and value I think a self build is far better value compared to a development built property. Your compromising in quality with a cheap new build but paying for quality with a self build and the post build valuation reflects that . I've built 4 builds for clients from start to finish as the main contractor and carpenter, I'm there to take the pressure and stress out of a self build. My advice would be buy older quality properties and renovate, if you're dead set on new then self build

Start by getting site mangers who have been on the tools and know what there looking at. I work in the building trade in the UK and would never get a new build. Companies don't want to pay for the good tradesman so they go cheap, so the standard has fallen so low, and they get labourers to do most of the work.

I've worked all over Europe and nothing compares to the poor build quality of British built modern homes. Most are a chipboard/plasterboard box with a brickwork skin with everything else made of the cheapest prefabricated plastic money can buy. The building plots are too small, garages are too small for the average car, rooms are to small as for storage space forget it, front gardens are near none existent. The estates they are built on don't have pavements, have very limited parking, the roads are too narrow and you can forget deliveries of anything that won't fit in a van. I feel sorry for the people who have bought these as I don't think they are capable of surviving the duration of a typical 25 year mortgage let alone the now popular 35 year terms. How on earth have they been allowed to get planning permission let alone pass the inspection.

However, after seeing the dog shit "professionals" do, I feel a lot better about my (functional but ugly) handiwork.

I live in the States (Arizona) and I've seen my share of decreasing quality. The problem is you're getting charged luxury prices for a crappy house when you used to buy a cheap house for a cheap price. At least across the pond you still use brick. It's rare here and most houses have OSB in a few corners on the outside of the house and styrofoam wrapping 80% of the house where you should be using osb or better yet cdx. I'm not opposed to styrofoam since it is a good insulation for the heat we get but that should be on top of the osb or cdx. Besides the cheap framing we also have issues with windows not being correctly weathered, countertops and cabinets slapped together, etc.

if you are ever in cornwall go to the tesco in truro and walk around. the floor by the tills drops 30 mm in a few meters and was signed off when it was built years ago so nothing new here

Absolutely scary workmen can be so lazy and poor. Take some pride in your trade and not just a pay packet thief. The people signing off simple need to loose their license.

I work as a commercial plumber building university’s doctor surgery’s ect and I’ve got to say it’s just the same on them jobs too, it’s so sad to say and see but we are loosing the skills as a nation. They want to off site before you’ve even started because it’s just pressure pressure pressure or money money money!
