Not an overstatement that NewJazz produces the best jazz piano tutorials on KZbin. And the most amazing part is the smooth and clear narration, coupled with inspiring demonstration of the concepts.

Dear Oliver, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your family! The past year has allowed me to get to know you, your art as a teacher and musician. I have spoken a lot about you around me, here in France. The fact that some of your lessons have been translated into French is an excellent thing. I can feel your kindness and love for people, which is a rare quality today. And when this quality is combined with such musical clarity it is wonderful. Greetings from Paris!

Im a guitar player starting piano for pure fun and will start from the music I love, found ur lessons and examples insanely good tho the lack of notation makes it very hard for me honestly, not being used to seeing in 3black 2 blacks etc and losing my way on the piano xd

Great lesson. When you make the transition from minor to major or vice versa , the transition is seamless to my ears. However, when I do it myself, the first few notes that I play in the transition from major to minor or minor to major doesn't feel right . Are there any passing notes to play when transitioning or it doesn't matter as long as the notes are from the major or minor scale of that key. It could very well be that I am not playing with your confidence when transitioning. I must say this is a great trick to go back and forth, it creates momentum in the music.

Hi :) Do you no this other lesson where we play lots of bluesy jazz phrases by using the "3 finger motor"; kzbin.info/www/bejne/jYu1eqFpjdKiqqs We play over the standard ii-V-I progression, but nevertheless I'm sure you'll get some new specific ideas on how to connect the different positions of the grips. Cheers from Oliver kzbin.info/www/bejne/jYu1eqFpjdKiqqs

Hi, Oliver! You beginnt C major acd, d#de, ega, why you don't called it a minor? Why we don't think it C minor & a minor instead of c minor & C major? Can you explain it me? Sorry, my english is not well.
@NewJazz
@NewJazz 2 жыл бұрын
Hi :) Good question. I think it's because the Major blues scale is derived from the Major pentatonic scale; c-d-e-g-a and then we add the extra "eb" note as a "blue note". The minor blues scale is derived from the minor pentatonic scale; c-eb-f-g-bb and then we add the extra "gb" note as a "blue note". Blues is always somewhere in between minor and Major ;) Cheers from Oliver

@NewJazz
@NewJazz 2 жыл бұрын
Hi and thank you so much :) No, chords are a different story, I think. The 3 finger motor is mostly for melodic improvisation. But in the next lesson we actually combine the 3 finger motor with some chord arpeggios using finger 4 and 5 as well. Hopefully the lesson will be all done and uploaded next week... Cheers from Oliver

Hi Oliver. (Complement: I didnt watched your "Bluesy Jazz Phrases in slow.." Vid to the End. I should watch this first to the End. So i could answer my Question by my self..?). Anyway First i want to say, that you never should feel obligated to answer my Questions. But if you like, i would have one more boring Question: Do you Try to let the e.g upwards Lines, going strictly upwards and not "falling" downwards inbetween? E.g: Grip Cj-Blues: a, c, d. ; and then change to Grip C-Blues: c, Eb, f, f#, g etc you would rather play (Grip Cj-Blues): a, c, d, ; and then somewhat like (Grip C-Blues): (no c) Eb, f, f#, g etc. to hold the line going upwards, and not falling down and beginning Grip C-Blues on the c? Maybe its both. But do i the right thoughts on that? Very warm regards
@NewJazz
@NewJazz 2 жыл бұрын
You can indeed do both. When I rehearse I sometimes come up with a little simple phrase that I like and then I exercise that phrase - at different positions, up and down, 'playing around' with it. It's quite amazing how much stuff you can do with just one single phrase (when using grips)... Cheers from Oliver

Hi Oliver, I have a question: How do you think about substituting Fingers 1 - 3 with 3 - 4 for some positions, e.g F minor and Bb minor? I think 3 - 4 adapts the movement of 1 - 3 quite natural as well. What's you experience? Is the benefit of using the same fingers worth practicing the more "awkward" positions or do you thing substituting 3 - 4 for these positions won't harm the benefits of the 3 finger system?
@NewJazz
@NewJazz 2 жыл бұрын
YES YES - you can indeed do that - no problem at all. Especially if you're not going further up the register but just turn around on the bb minor... cheers from Oliver

Hi :) This channel is mostly about modern modal free jazz - “NewJazz” - and not so much about the old standards. Each lesson shows different improvisation techniques we can use on the progression.I hope you’ll find it useful ;) kzbin.info/aero/PLd8gNAxPUcJzqwqL21s9NExEKpk14bglb Cheers from Oliver
