@@imboringidkwhyimalive Alison Bechdel created a set of rules or criteria to check if a work of fiction (usually a movie) had written female characters stereotypically or as sexist caricatures of women. Here is a definition I found: “a way of evaluating whether or not a film or other work of fiction portrays women in a way that is sexist or characterized by gender stereotyping. To pass the Bechdel test a work must feature at least two women, these women must talk to each other, and their conversation must concern something other than a man.”

@emiliavachon10 ай бұрын
Honestly I liked Icebreaker for the first 5 chapters where Stassie hated him. It’s pretty common for figure skaters and hockey players to have a nasty rivalry - hockey players can be really misogynistic. I think she was valid to hate Nate for what she viewed as him not being responsible for his teammates as captain. Hockey players practice a lot, especially if they’re a good team, as do figure skaters, so considering there’s only so much time between classes for both groups to practice it seems okay (not that they ever go to class). Maybe it’s because I’m canadian but every uni has at least two rinks in their complex, so that’s not a cracked up rich person thing. The problem was that there was no plot, every character was shallow, they suddenly went from disliking each other to fucking like rabbits, and the author had a fundamental misunderstanding of both sports she was trying to represent. I hated icebreaker with a passion.
@fefefefefer9 ай бұрын
yes! i was really excited for all the abusive-skater-partner plot, but it never really came. it was never resolved, the author just got lost with a lot of pwp (porn withouth plot) and killed the potencial of the book😊

I recently read a (Haruki) Murakami book cause I'd heard good things about him. Big mistake. I felt so repulsed the whole way through, reading about this pathetic male MC fantasizing about the women around him and of his CHILDHOOD, feeling sorry for himself and wallowing in self pity, as if he's the center of the universe, not say, his murdered childhood friend?? Would've loved to find out more about THAT, why wasn't she the MC? All that only for one of the other childhood friends to turn around and make him feel GREAT about himself with a little speech, cause he's the BEST and she's ALWAYS had a crush on him and felt inadequate! Cause what else?! Plus the constant forced vagueness of everything, without a resolution. And yeah, one could argue that an MC can be unlikeable and sexist on purpose. But I just felt the author seep through. I get so angry thinking about it still, sorry💀

I also just found Anastasia unlikable, her friends-with-benefits relationship with another guy didn't really feel necessary. There wasn't enough cute moments for me. There were too many characters. The nail in the coffin for me was when they had sex in an Uber that also had all of their friends in it. So that's my opinion. I recently got back into reading again and every time I feel bad about only reading 2-4 books a month while other people are out here reading 12, I remember you telling me that it’s okay, and even healthy, for reading to not be your whole life. Thank you for your content, and I don’t mind if you don’t have the spoons to respond to this ❤️

I love the way you talk about books... Logically I know the twisted books aren't great, but they were so entertaining tho haha

Watching her review good books is cool and all, but watching her review god awful books is an actual treat. Thank you for your service, and I truly hope you do more!

I feel you so much on the curiousity leading you to the worst books. I'm always like, "It can't possibly be that bad of a train wreck," and then it always is.

I was surprised when you said Things We Never Got Over was an adult romance because the cover made me think it was a YA romance. It reminds me of the Meg Cabot and Sarah Dessen books I used to read as a tween. ETA: I need you to do a review of Without Merit. I just know you'd tear it apart in the best way.

I’ve yet to see anyone comment on this, but I hated icebreaker’s main characters with a passion. Stassie begins the book by stating that her planner is her lifeline and she’s hopeless without it, but after a few chapters the planners never mentioned again. Then you have Nate who, when taking a shower with Stassie, has to ask what conditioner is and have the concept of it explained to him. It’s the worst written book I’ve read in such a long time.

"she has to explain what conditioner is" um what 💀 romance is truly dead and we're all in hell with the bar

A sports dude not knowing what conditioner is and not using it is actually kinda realistic

I was so drawn into this commentary that the sound effects during the discussion of Icebreaker’s epilogue literally caused a jump scare. 😱

thank you so much for reading all of these books for us and providing us with videos! I could listen to you rant forever; the way you express your thoughts just hits precisely how I wish I could express myself. I found your channel over the trope jail videos on TikTok and I've been in love with your presentation style ever since

your book reviews have become a thing I start to watch when I'm having a really tough time self-regulating or shame spiralling and I'm so grateful to you for always bringing me a smile and also. jaw dropping revelations about the books you read. you're a massive comfort creator (love your style by the way!) and i've been picking up a lot of your recommended books recently!

I love your video description! Thank you for including such great timestamps. I don't usually comment on someone's looks, but since you mentioned that your "fantastic style and great hair" are your qualifications for reviewing and rating these books, I've gotta tell you that I love your outfits and your hair! Your taste in sweaters is impeccable.

I would love to see a ranking video of all the worst smut that show up in these awful TikTok romances lol. Seems ripe for the picking
