Newport Headland Residence - Cutting Edge x MHDP Architects (4K)

This project exemplifies the true collaboration between architect and builder. Newport Residence 3 is the second house designed for MHDP’s regular builder, Lance Horton of Cutting Edge Building (Refer to Mona Vale Residence 2 for the first one). Lance had been looking for properties on the Newport Headland for many years and was excited to land one, bringing Mark on board almost immediately to develop the future vision. Lance wanted a modern house but it also needed to carry the character of a beach house. The site-related challenges are particularly about topography and aspect. The site falls away to the major view down along Newport Beach, but facing south. The key then was still integrating solar access to be brought in from the north. The design also needed to control privacy between neighbours.
Working together, Mark and Lance were able to explore materiality and detailing on the fly - moving quickly between sketches, CAD modelling, markups and 1:1 onsite prototypes, with the assistance of Project Architect Kelvin Tan.
The end result is exceptional and talks to the prowess of all the people involved in the undertaking and the benefits of a team that operates as a well-oiled machine.
