Newport, Isle of Wight Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Born and bred in Newport, seen many changes, some for the worst but still love the place 69 years later

I was born on Highfield Rd across from Barton school. Lived on Westminster Lane and Winston Rd. Went to school at 9 Acres. Left at 6-7 years old when father joined the army and travelled the world a bit with the family - Belgium, Bahrain, Cyprus, Germany and a lot of the more picturesque places in England. Came back to Newport at 19-20 from Cyprus and worked for the Property Services Agency at Osborne House. I helped the fitter put in gas heating at Carisbrooke castle and under the bus station (as it used to be in 1973/4). I can remember the Bugle where we all met on the weekends - gone now. There was also 4 "teeth" to the needles then and no chair lift down to Alum Bay - you could still fill up your jam jar with coloured sand yourself. As a kid I played on the railway viaduct that is now a car park below Ash Rd. Grandparents, aunts and uncles all still live there. Moved to Germany in 1974 and have been back a few times. Having lived abroad, Newport to me now is not exactly Rome or Paris, but looks rather tired and run down, especially the terraced rubbish that surrounds it. There are far better places on the island, but you'd think, being the "capital", that it would be more inviting. I'd be embarrassed to show anyone where I was born, because to me it looks like a slum now. Pity. Having said that, I'm impressed with the progress Southampton has made. I'll stop here, otherwise this will get too long.

Very good photography of Newport. You nearly went to Carisbrook castle but turned around and went back into Newport. There used to be beautiful boats in the harbour. Thank you. 🎉🎉🎉
