Sometimes I despair for the future of the human race. I thought the whole "Sky is falling" fairy tale was, well, just a fairy tale. Sadly it appears to be alive and well, living on the Internet. Your video shows what some research and a little bit of logic can do. Keep it up Sir.

I think most Bike manufacturers have withheld test bikes from various magazines over the years for having the audacity to point out flaws. Honda used to have their test fleet by Dixon racing back in the 70's, I'm sure just the standard service.

I got my Street twin a month ago and before I'd even heard anything about the Pirellis I did think a good amount of times how slippy they were, took a ride today between Preston and Harrogate along the A59 and the amount of times the traction control worked especially on roundabouts that took no lean or were particularly wet I'd feel the power cut off or the front slip, iv had Dunlop sportmax and ridden home through storm Jorge earlier this year through snow and really bad rain and never slipped once on my Honda, it could be the torque of the Street twin but doesn't explain the front wheel slipping aswell, I'm still keeping the Pirellis until they need changing but I won't be putting another pair of them on again I'd rather try a set of Avon Spirits or Continental road attack but its all personal opinion but I have found the Pirellis to not be the best

Well presented video. I'll be honest, I hadn't heard about the tyre conspiracy but it wouldn't have bothered me. From my own experience riding the Interceptor in wet weather, and we get more than our fair share of that in the Uk, the tyres have performed as they should. It might be because I have rider modes for all conditions, they're not included on the bike, they're programmed into me. If it's wet, slow down, that's not rocket science. I've even rode my Interceptor on the beach while at the coast on a day out and the tyres managed no problem. If they'll handle sand they'll handle pretty much anything except oil. Take care Stuart.

My years working in a commercial fleet operation taught me that the mileage performance of some brand/tyre types varied significantly between OE and aftermarket fitment. Great to have that tire issue cleared up. Interestingly, Fortnine, who produced the contentious video are ostensibly nationwide discount warehouse tire dealers here in Canada. I know my Enfield handles very nicely and I have pushed it pretty hard and so I'll stick with the phantoms. Many thanks.

I heard production was shifted to Thailand but their marketing department still alludes to some spurious claims of being British Tin Foil Hats. The model shown is not the original Fillingham, that factory closed in the early 80's, the name being bought by a totally different company years later who cheekily made their hats look quite similar to the original Fillingham and claimed the same heritage.

An unfortunate aspect of the internet is that any clown can make a video spinning out a ridiculous theory and there will be those that swallow it whole. I replaced my Pirelli's on my 2020 Triumph T120 after 1000 miles with Avon Spirit ST's. I never found anything really wrong with the Pirelli's, I just wanted a better handling tire, one that helped the T120 through the curves. My personal experience has been the Avon's changed the way my Triumph rode - better, more lively handling, safer feeling. The bike now feels lighter and rides even better. I remember with the Pirelli's running out of turning ability on a few curves - not with the Avon's, there's much more turning ability. They also run over grooved pavement without wandering around like the Pirelli's. I remember reading about the T120's handling and people saying it felt heavy and a little sluggish. Triumph would be smart to use the Avon's as their OEM tires to squash that perception.

Having previously ridden MZ250's over winter on their stock Pneumant tyres with no problems, I just want my tyres to have a decent lifespan. 4500 miles on an NC750X rear is ridiculous. Give the boy racer wannabe's the soft tyres and give the grownups more sensible rubber with a flatter profile for longer life.

Thank you for my Friday morning dose of wry humour and intelligent YouTubing; the perfect antidote to the nonsense I have to deal with in the ‘day job’! It amazes me how some people manage to get out of bed in the morning, because someone on t’internet has probably told them it’s dangerous. On the tyres matter, I think this is symptomatic of the ‘…it must be some else’s fault…’ culture we sadly have to put up with these days. I suspect most of the supposed ‘issues’ with things like tyres are actually down to ‘user error’, but people won’t admit to that; it must be some else’s fault…!

Just come across this video Stuart.. I've seen a few channels advocating changing the standard fitted tyres as soon as possible. Not mentioning the tread depth but the Cross-ply/ Radial argument, even the compound of the rubber that the tyre is made. I haven't made a real in-depth investigation on the subject, I just fit the same make and type of tyres I'm happy with. In my case the Pirelli Diablo Rosso 2. on my Street Triple 675. I can remember when Bridgestone tyres were considered made from plastic they were so useless.....

I did the same on my last two Triumph's. Worst tyres I have used since I started motorcycling in 1961. Designed and tested in Spain totally useless in a wet and cold Cumbria. Tubed tyres one crossply, one radial you couldn't make it up.They are so good I only managed to sell a new back one for £15 the other three went to the skip after months of advertising. OK for sunny Sunday afternoons nothing else. anyone who rates these tyres has never ridden on Michelin RP 3/4/5s or the like.

When it rains,,,,,, SLOW DOWN,! This simple skill of 'reading and riding to the road conditions' seems to have been lost over the years. Wet leaves, rain, ice, mud, potholes, diesel spills, etc etc, are all factors effecting tyre grip whatever make of tyre you have. Read the road and ride accordingly. Cheers Keith

On another subject, the roads that you film during your rides in your part of the country look like they have some good surfaces, in stark contrast to the roads around North Essex and Suffolk. To be honest I didn’t think cross ply tyres were manufactured for new bikes and cars any more, only used on older pre 1970 classic vehicles in keeping with their heritage, I thought all tyres were now radials. Am happy with the Pirelli’s and would fit again on my Interceptor, but I do remember campaigns in the 70’s by the tyre manufacturers making a big thing of the increased safety of fitting radials over cross plies

I thought at first glance Stuart you were wearing a new Motone part they were manufacturing, now I understand its your invention, but I noticed you never discussed pricing ? but seriously what a great informed video, you certainly go to great lengths to get the information correct that you give to us for that I am sure that I talk for all subscribers and tell you we are very grateful for all your input and indeed great videos, great music , regards.

You may have mentioned this in this most excellent video, but I notice that my Continental GT 650 has tubeless tyres and of course spoke wheels. These particular tyres were manufactured in Indonesia.

No I didn't mention it as I don't have a continental GT. if made in Indonesia they should definitely be Crossply tyres.

Amazes me how in my experience people get so eat up about this. Buddies bikes I service bang on about tyre type, spec ,compound etc, etc but when I carry out their service usually, the tyre pressures are way off. Generally low and they confess they don't generally check them! Tyres are subjective like most consumables we choose for the bikes e.g. brake pads, chains etc. Going to fabricate my tin hat later 👍

I had a lot of respect for 'that' youtuber. His videos & the presentation have improved a lot over the years. But thanks for uploading this video Stuart! This proves, again, that all that glitters is not gold. Like another one of the comments said, 'that' youtuber needs to fortify his information 🙂

Way back when I 2000 when I had a Triumph Daytona 955i I wanted to change to Continental Sport, that too got terrible comments regarding grip quality in the man's at the time, I dud two track days with them, giving them some serious grief, many more road miles as well. Not an issue with friends at all even through the winter months! Once again a common sense upload by yourself Stuart. 👌

Thanks for putting things straight Uncle Stu. I was taken in by the other KZbin’er because, like most other people I was too lazy to fact check it. I will be more careful from now on. To be fair though I didn’t really listen to the half french feller as I was out enjoying my Interceptor on its original tyres. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I saw the video in question. So..... My factory set were made in Brazil. After 7000 miles I replaced my rear tire. I still have mileage to go on the front. My replacement off the shelf rear tire was made in Germany. Also and as you said....my new german rear is infact labeled as a Radial tire. The factory original Bazilian source front tire is NOT labeled as a radial but does break down the different piles of construction, which I take to indicate it is not a radical !?!. Now I am confused. Does that mean I can have either a Radial or bias-ply construction tire in the same tire? But that being said... I have had no problems with grip or general performance, and my Conti' GT spends a whole lot of time laid over when ever possible and has done nothing but inspire confidence. It will be interesting to see if this German made set of Phantoms last longer. But over all I am happy with the rubber so far...regardless of factory origin. Enjoyed the detective work and commentary. As for the other show in question and as a fan of that series too...... seems they're in a bit of a sticky wicket, and it's my hope that the apparent misdirection was accidental and that we all learn a little something about validating information before passing it on. Thanks for listening. Ride safe everyone. Peace out! clb

You shouldn't normally mix Cross ply and Radials unless its stipulated by the manufacturer. I would check with your dealer on that unless you already have.

@@stuartfillingham I'm grateful for your input. I could be wrong about the front tire not being a radial. The rear is clearly labeled "radial". Usually it's inspection, tread depth check, tire pressure and then forget about it. I shall take a more thorough look at the sidewalls in the morning. Thanks again Stuart. Carl

I must have missed the duff info video. This has me curious now and I wouldn't mind seeing it. I had also heard that tyre manufacturers in general can sometimes supply OE variations of certain compounds that you wouldn't be able to buy. That's been said by tyre suppliers, fitters and certain bike magazines.

If you're shocked that your tires come from brazil, india, or thailand, ask yourself when the last time you saw a rubber tree growing wild in the USA or UK. They're going to likely build most tires closest to the source materials. I'm in aviation and Michelin is making most of their aircraft tires it seems these days in thailand. Doesn't make sense to harvest rubber there, bring it to france, only to ship a tire to the USA. Yes there is still USA production of tires but its mostly on the highest end.

Hang on, I know little about tyres beyond what I experience and my research into what's going on my bikes next. You say there are both radial and cross-ply versions of this tyre. Are there differences which arise from the two methods of construction? My (limited) understanding tells me that a radial is superior in many ways to a cross-ply? Can they both be certified under the same safety spec? Why construct the same tyre in two different ways? I know the channel you're referring to and it's good to see some knowledge and research being applied, but for me this video has raised a much bigger question than it has answered

Knowing a little bit about tyres can be a dangerous thing. There's nothing unusual about cross ply technology.
@SausageSide
@SausageSide 3 жыл бұрын
That's good to know; but given what you've said about different 'versions' of the same tyre being subject to separate certification processes and therefore being unlikely to exist (in terms of 'cheap' versions of the Phantom for example) would radial and cross-ply versions of the same tyre not be subject to separate and expensive certification processes? I'm not calling into question the quality of one or the other manufacturing technique; I've trusted various models of Pirelli tyres for years and I trust them; but a radial and cross-ply version of the same tyre would have different characteristics surely?
