I wonder if those stats are like that solely because of the large college student population.

It IS absolutely the worst damn town I've ever lived in. I moved away from there over a decade ago and never looked back. I grew up in GF/EGF and the place is a cesspool of poverty. The same few last names have run EVERYTHING in that town for generations. The local businesses and city councils (which are run by those same local business owners mostly) keep the wages horrifically low. They openly work together to keep wages pathetic out of pure greed. Add to that the fact that nobody told the landlords that their properties are in "flyover country", so they charge ridiculous rents to people who make the lowest wages in the nation and GF starts to look like Hell on Earth. The BEST decision I ever made in my life was getting the hell out of that place. I tell anyone who asks about living there or even visiting to just forget it. Once you've lived ANYWHERE ELSE, you never want to go back. The leadership all sucks, the wages suck, the housing sucks, the weather sucks and there really isn't a "silver lining" to living there. Whenever I talk to my friends that still live there, I'm constantly telling them how much better life is once you leave that place. The pathetic wages alone are enough to make any sane person say "nope". Why would you want to work 60 hours a week at half the damn pay you could get anywhere else for the exact same job? Grand Forks is a microcosm of everything that us wrong with America, all rolled into one package. The "haves" have everything and everyone else is just plain suffering. You couldn't pay me a million dollars a year to move back to that place. No freaking way.

My late Grandmother and Great Grandmother lived there. The family went there most winters, but we spent most of our time at her house, at Columbia mall, and at some other restaurant nearby. Also, a couple playgrounds. When I got a little older (late grade school) I started exploring the neighbourhood by myself on foot, met some local kids (to hang out with for a day or two and then forget about forever), etc. There was a playground a few blocks from my grandmothers house in the yard of a former grade school. There was another one that we had to drive to that had this huge red rope climbing structure. The trips tapered off a bit into high school except when I went down there a little after graduating from high school to consider attending the university. When I was little it was a neighbourhood like any other (with random things that were unique - more sidewalks, a fire hydrant painted like a dog, houses looked a little different, etc), but as I got older I started to notice that it was probably a bit boring. That trip to check out the university would have probably been around 99.

Most of what the city government does makes it worse. You want a nice city to live it? Lower the tax rates across the boards, stop favoring one business over another - picking winners and losers - and let things happen organically. If you lower the taxes for EVERYONE, businesses as well as ordinary property, stop over-regulating everyone and everything, businesses will compete to be here and there will be no need to run around recruiting unsuitable businesses (such as Chinese-owned industries). Most people are very nice. It SHOULD be a nice place to live. It is this over micro-managing by city government that makes people enemies of one another and of the city.

Grand Forks absolutely sucked in the early 70's when I was stationed there. The townspeople hated "basers". Thing is, much of their economy came from "basers". And those potato processing plants made the place smell like open sewage.

Grand Forks populations are in, and Out. I think 20% of the population are students, but the city has a lot of warehouses those needs. I have seen people complaining about mandatory overtime for companies like Simplot, LM, Crytal sugar, Philadelphia, and some more. The city doesn't have a lot of part-time jobs though. Months like December, January, and part of February most of these employers are down due to the weather and holidays, however, the city is getting better.

You're talking about 2012-2013? I lived there from 1989 to 1993, and it was absolutely PRISTINE. It was crime-free. You could literally leave your car doors unlocked, and things like that! I lived on University Avenue and 18th street, and would often go to the Valley Dairy on Washington and University. I was in my early teens back then. I visited once in 2001, and that was the last time I was there, and it had changed a bit.

@@747-pilot a lot of changes occurred after the historic 54.11 ft. flood of 1997. Whole neighborhoods were leveled (Lincoln, Riverside, Sherlock in EGF). I left in 2001 and only go back to visit family a few times per year.
