Fred Harris got me involved in politics during his amazing campaign for the Democratic nomination for president in 1976. He was talking like Bernie Sanders during a time when these issues were seldom discussed. He’s considered one of the most economically progressive senators to ever serve in the United States Senate. Interesting side note: Hubert Humphrey went to the wire in 1968 in deciding between Fred Harris and Edmund Muskie. At the last minute, he chose Muskie. Muskie turned out to be a bland campaigner for the ticket and Harris would have been a barnstormer. And probably a difference maker in that incredibly close election in 1968.

I have that same book!! I love the chapter where he talks about how his dad was angry that the government getting involved with farm subsidies is what ruined the family farmer and benefitted big agribusiness. That's what usually happens when politicians intervene in the marketplace.

Fred Harris. A genuine human being. Back in 1976, I named my 1964 Chevy Impala after him because I was so impressed with his bringing up how the wealthy had all the money and power, and the working man had none. Guess things haven't changed much. SAD!

I recommend Fred’s book The New Populism. It is still relevant today. We still have Corporate Welfare to this day. Nobody really talks about right now.

I wish the Democratic Party would go back to economic populism with values! Fred Harris was a great presidential candidate!
