"The Orphan" is my favorite underrated song. It always makes me cry, because I was struggling with the first pangs of questions that led me to deconstruction. In my heart I knew I was not going to be entering a pretty or fun time. Thank you for this. I still listen to this song.

"Lost The Plot" may be my favorite but "When You Called My Name" hits me so hard. "The Orphan" is a great song. You were ten, I was thirty-four. :) FWIW, I saw VOTA live and met them. Great show and really cool guys.

When You Called My Name is another underrated one! As a pastor's kid and former church staff member, I definitely related to it. And VOTA seems cool! I feel bad for making fun of Bryan Olesen, lol

Bryan Olesen came into the band temporarily on purpose. The ultimate goal of him being in the band was just until they could find someone full time, and when they found Paul Colman, he left.

Oh YES!!!! The Orphan is a Song I will put on repeat at least once every couple of months- for this one line- “I slept one night in Abraham’s field and dreamt there was no moon the night he died…counting stars….Selah” It gets me in the feels Every time! ❤

Hi. Atheist here, and my two favorite "Christian" songs are "Entertaining Angels" by the Newsboys and "Lord, Make Me Your Instrument" by the Ragamuffin Band. I don't have to be a blind adherent to appreciate good music. The Ragamuffin Band has some amazing songs constructed with modern instruments combined with traditional strings/orchestra. When I think of entertaining angels by the light of my TV screen, I think of my times of innumerable UNanswered prayers and pondering the mysteries of life while high as ballz watching random $h!t on TV. This song is totally underrated for its content and musical composition. I think we need to appreciate artistry wherever it comes from, and NOT the ideology behind it.

Olesen is pronounced the same as Olsen And yeah, one thing I've really appreciated about OG Newsboys is that they are willing to criticize the church's hypocrisies and flaws (like in Lost the Plot) while stll supporting the institution of the church, like in this song. Edited to add: My understanding is that Devotion is the result of a lot of record label pressure to recreate the success of Adoration, but that the band didn't really want to do a second worship album. Which is why you can kind of tell their heart isn't in it. Which is a bummer all around

My bad. I guess I’ve never heard his name out loud. 😂 Completely agree with you on that too. I really do miss that side of newsboys. And I think you’re completely correct since I feel like a lot of artists were being pressured at the time to release a “worship” album

This song really shows the influence Steve Taylor had on them. He was the king of pointing out hypocrisy in the church.
