You can kind of tell he's trying to from the beginning (no accent, but says papes?). He's educated, and probably never has had friends that speak with newsies accents or use newsies slang. He's literally just trying to copy them. It's awkward the whole time, but a NY accent is probably actually easier to sing than speak.

back when i was a kid we had to do a spring show for parents it took our music teacher weeks to prep us for the show (K-4TH GRADE) it took usweeks to learn the songs and dance moves we had to learn the 3rd and 4th graders had to do spoon full of sugar from mary poppins and bear necessities] it was great then in a finale all the grades lined up for a final number the lights grew dark as we all held little stars and sang when u wish upon a star the audience wanted an encore so we did it a second time with the audience singing along and it was fun

Max Casella was 26 years old in this movie, from what I've calculated. I bet he had fun, because he was with a ton of teenagers and his attitude in everything I see him in is just so young and happy and bouncy that he probably felt like a teenager again. I bet that was great, and though it's kind of unbelievable, look it up and you will find out how old he is now and then do the math. Still, it was great that he just acted like a kid so that it was totally believable that he was one, and this along with Hakuna Matata is one of his greatest songs that he has sung in a musical.

I only watched the movie and listened to the musical for the first time a few days ago and havn't seen the musical but judging by the music and plot synopsies it seems like a lot of the musical was filler. the only song that I prefered to the orrigional was seize the day but it seems like the changes to seize the day wouldn't work in a movie as well as it would on stage. While I like musical theature and I do recognize that it can be restricting but theres a feeling of the story being simplified to accomidate the ristrictions with a lot of tell dont show going on. Again never seen the musical probably never will but thats my impression of it
