This is a specifically trait of screwball comedy (30s-40s as mentioned), not all "old" films. I personally found His Girl Friday a bit obnoxious in its exaggerated witty (and pretty abusive! :D) banter and hectic pace, even compared to other classics in the genre. Conversely, I really like Bringing Up Baby and love Arsenic and Old Lace.

I’m going to go ahead and say Zooey Deschanel is by very far one of the best SNL guests. She understood every assignment and took it seriously in true comedy. SNL get’s Hollywoods biggest A-List actors, and their skits are always pathetic all-cringe-no-laughs flops. And then you get Deschanel and her scenes are hilarious and professionally performed.
