The bull will be released on the the arena through the vadi vasal, an entry gate. The contestant should only hold the bull by its hump. Holding by the neck, horns or tail results in disqualification. The contestant should hold the bull's hump for 30 seconds or for 4.6 metres (15 ft), whichever is the longer when the bull attempts to escape. If the bull throws the contestant off before the line or if no-one manages to hold on to the bull, then the bull will be declared victorious and will be taken for the breeding, other bulls will be used only for farming purpose. Only one contestant should hold on to the bull at one time. If more than one contestant holds on to the bull, then there is no winner.No contestant should hit or hurt the bull in any manner

Those bulls which runs very fast & aggressive and those bulls which cannot be hugged by any player, is considered as the best Bull for breeding. People who has cows (cow owners) notes all this in the Jallikattu events & later they approach the specific Bull owner for breeding. This is practised for 1000's of years in Tamilnadu.

@vaanan navin, Brahmins didn't impose Sati on other caste people but they themselves practised it coz their men were not strong enough to stop British or Mughals taking their widows. Mostly Devadasis practised it as they feared from getting f@acked by the British & Mughals. As means of honour, those Devadasi fell into the pyre. But look at Devars, Mudaliyars, Gowandars- none of other caste people of TN practised Sati.

My god!!! this lady should have some mental problem. Please send her to the mental hospital. She is comparing child marriage and sati with Jallikattu. For child marriage, they didn't ban the marriage. Rather they regulated the marriage act - minimum age of 18 for women and 21 for men. Likewise, TN can conduct the Jallikattu with the regulation that was enforced from 2011. Similarly, why the hell she is comparing Sati with Jallikattu. In Sati, the Woman was killing herself with her husband's body is cremated. If she wants to compare Sati, then she should only compare Sati with Animal Slaughter/Killing and not with Jallikattu.

Ambika says Sati is tradition and whether we must follow burning of widows. Sati was a social evil that was formulated for the sole purpose of getting rid of the woman in getting a share in property. But Eru Thazhuvuthal is not for killing bulls although some ill treatment do happen and can be regulated. Can Sati be regulated wherein the woman enters the pyre for namesake and is able to come out alive without a single scar? If the woman is willing to go into the pyre and come out without a single scar on her then such a regulated arrangement would be very well okay. Eru Thazhuvuthal is a sport and women also take part in sports like wrestling and gymnastics where death can occur if rules are not followed. So putting Eru Thazhuvuthal and Sati on the same scale doesn't work.

Why are we not starting with slaughter of animals first before banning animal sports? Sati tradition started due to the cruelty of the invading armies. There was no other reason to sati. The only reason this is becoming an issue is because bulls(and not cows) were added to the protected animals list.Who will decide which are the animals to be protected?

I think these animal welfare group must go to the ground and educate the people instead of sitting and requesting for ban just like that and that too choosing a soft target. Talking of Sri Krishna, His association with bulls is quite close. As vIrya shulkam for marrying Sri Nappinnai, Sri Krishna is reputed to have conquered not one but seven ferocious bulls. Taming of bulls thus seems to be an ancient sport, as common in the Orient as in the West. Several Azhwars have recorded this feat of Sri Krishna (of taming seven wild bulls). Says Sri BhootattAzhwAr- “ Eruttiruttha nal Ayar Eru” Recounting KaNNA’s exploit with the untameable bulls, the Azwar calls Sri Krishna Himself a bull-“Eru”, certifying to His virility, bravery and strength. Unsatisfied with this brief reference to this masterful act, the Azhwar mentions this in the next pasuram also-“Eru Ezhum vendru adarttha endai”. Not to be left behind, Sri PeyAzwar too records this thus- “ PinnaikkAi mutral muri Etrin mun nindru moimbu ozhitthAi”. It is customary for those engaged in taming bulls not to confront them, but to try approaching them sideways or from behind, strategically. It is a testimony to Sri Krishna’s bravery that He approached the bulls squarely from the front-“ mun nindru moimbu ozhittAi”
