An above-average travel day as we RV across Mexico. This week we move quickly East towards the Yucatan, but not before a stop at our first Mexican beach (with cold beers and tasty ceviche), inevitable travel day high jinks, and meeting our first toll road protestors!
It was time to hit the road again, and leave the comfy confines of Las Americas Trailer Park in Cholula. These next few travel days would take us from Puebla (near Mexico City) all the way over to the Yucatan peninsula for what we hoped was much needed beach time and cenotes (beautiful sink holes or cave pools found throughout the area). When you're taking a road less traveled, things rarely go to plan. Lucky for you, we're blazing a path for future travelers!
We chose to overnight in the fishing village of Anton Lizardo (near Veracruz), and were rewarded with delicious food, friendly locals, and very cheap RV camping on the beach. It was hot, but not a bad way to spend the night! Hat tip to the iOverlander app for this great inexpensive spot for a night.
As we found at the beach, there is a big difference in air temperature and humidity now that we weren't in the mountains anymore. Since we entered Mexico in February, almost all of our stops were thousands of feet above sea level, and pretty dry. The combination made for comfortable temperatures with just the windows open and fans going, but now it was time to really exercise our generators if the campground lacked suitable electricity. Fast fact: not a single campground we have stayed in so far in Mexico has 30 amp plugs available. 20 amps (or even 15amps) is the standard, and most without suitable grounds. Be cautious, get a voltage regulator and always test the outlet before plugging in. My advice is to think of electricity as a "nice to have" when traveling through Mexico, and feel comfortable dry camping at most stops.
We reached Villahermosa the following day, serving as the last major city for stocking up supplies and food in case Mexico would follow the US and begin stay-at-home orders. Check out some of our other Mexico Monday videos for more details on what life has been like since COVID-19 restrictions were enacted South of the border.

Thanks Adrian! We were SO thankful that the campground mailed it to us. That part would have been impossible to replace here in Mexico! Lesson learned to double check everything when we leave haha. Yay, that's so exciting. Are you hitting the road soon? -Katelyn

Seafood and Cervezas is the best way to go! Love meeting new people when you are traveling. So sorry that you got hurt cleaning your RV after the plate smashed. Those incidents always make adventures so interesting. Good and Bad. Wow, Toll collector for $25 so crazy, but nice that you got the 100 pesos one. Watched the whole video

Now I know what was next the electric thing not sure how to spell it. But at least they found it and were able to ship it to you. It was sad seeing the dogs just lying there. Thank you Howard for letting me know about the lights going out in that other video. It sure she’s look like good food and good fun there where you have been.

$8 a night to camp on the beach? So great! Wow, that food looks amazing. Ha, they both forgot their anniversary. ;p Oh no!!! You need to get plastic plates and bowls instead :( I've never heard of a toll booth takeover. So crazy! Poor puppy. That is so hot. Yuck. Such a bummer you left it behind. At least they can ship it.

$8 a night is a bargain, especially with the beach proximity! They didn't remember their own anniversary? 😂 So fun to mingle with the locals; we loved our moments like that in Mexico too. Y'all were breakin' dishes up in there?? (April couldn't resist the Rihanna reference, LOL) What were you using to communicate with your friends? You already know how we feel about the damn tolls there in Mexico, but we never heard of this before. So what is the benefit to the take-over, do they earn some money on top of the money they might need for legal fees? Oh no, that sucks you left your attachment to plug-in! Bet that water slide felt so good after it being 87 degrees in your RV!

Hi Chuck! Thanks so much for watching and great question. I am a very paranoid dog mom. Usually when we're in the US we have a webcam for them (it's the Arlo Baby monitor and we got it at Costco) that sends us alerts if the temperature rises or drops to a certain level. Here in Mexico, we can't run that since we don't have consistent WiFi. So that day when we went into the water park, we left the generator running with the AC on. We were only gone about an hour and could see/hear the RV from where we were, so I knew they were staying nice and cool. ☺️ We also have a MaxAir fan that we can set to kick on at a certain temperature to help ventilate the area if the AC were to fail. If it's too hot, we just wouldn't leave them. Hope this helps! It's a great rig, the pets and us love it! -Katelyn

Dry camping is something that interests me very much. What's the longest you've boondocked? If you had time to prep and plan, how long do you think the 2 of you could live 100% off grid?

Thanks for watching, and great question! Our rig is meant more for ease of movement and getting into places other RVs might not fit. So our tanks aren't as large as many, meaning fresh water and our tanks filling up are the great limiters. Based on our usage from a week of dry camping (we actually had to think hard what our longest stint has been, lol), we could probably make it 2 or more weeks without a struggle. Solar definitely helps 👍 -Howard
