10:18 Actually, if I'm remembering the story correctly, the first Falcon 1 failure was due to corrosion from the sea air. They'd originally wanted to launch at the end of 2005 but had to stand down. They left the rocket sitting exposed to the salty air for months. I believe the nut replacement was an incorrect culprit that Musk blamed someone for but which turned out to be wrong. This is written about at length in Eric Berger's fantastic book "Liftoff".

@nnamdiazuakola5254 I agree that these companies have a lot of catching up to do. I think ULA and Boeing are just scamming bureaucrats. But I think rocket lab has some real potential. Blue origin too, but they will have to do some real overhauls to be able to compete with SpaceX, they need to fix their serious problem with being way too slow. On the other hand they started out with enough capital investment that timing doesn't affect their long term growth and they want to dive head first into the heavy launch sector

Funny that the main motivation in the formative days of SpaceX was getting to Mars, but they've yet to make it beyond low Earth orbit. It's a massive success, cost effectively making rockets that land safely almost from scratch, and dumping thousands of satellites into LEO - just not at all as originally conceived.
@KoRntech10 сағат бұрын
How is it a massive success? The launch costs to NASA didn't decrease they're about the same as they were hitching a ride with Russia. How out of what 5 launches of Starship only 1 booster was recovered? Wasn't that supposed to be the big deal? I mean totally ignoring the ship portion with the cargo or people with not so reliable engines.

The thing always forgotten to mention is that no matter how much we mess up earth with nuclear wars, radiation and pollution, the environment stays way way less hostile then the Moon, Mars a space station or any other place in our solar system. It is not popular to tell as it sounds so romantic to leave earth to find a better life but each and every craft or base that is imagined, designed or build, would be safer for humans to live in when it remains here on earth. It is virtually impossible to mess up earth so much that it becomes safer in another place in space. Sorry for messing up your "going to space" dreams. I still love these technical challenges. They are just not the solution for humans the coming thousand of years.

Not enough credit is given to Tom Mueller, Gwynne Shotwell, and scores of engineers for SpaceX's success. SpaceX also would have failed without the lifelines handed out by investors and NASA, and some of the setbacks were due to Musk's decision. Musk can be credited for a lot of things that lead to his companies' successes. But he's also solely responsible for some of the setbacks, and the roles of others and a bit of good fortune were also key.
