It took them HOW many years to finally appreciate his talents and help Kevin put them to use for good? Shame on them all, the gov't included. Thanks for the story about him. @@sniper9143 Limited by modern standards. Phone calls and cell phones were very much traceable back then, too. CALEA didn't exist yet, so it wasn't exactly real-time. Changing his ESN ("cloning") meant his phone was linked to someone else. That's harder to do these days as the networks are far more integrated - the same ESN showing up more than once can be detected _automatically_ within seconds. Locating an ESN within the network took a while; locating a phone number is instantaneous, because that's how the PSTN functions. (esp. for _mobile_ phones.) Moving around, changing your identity makes you just as had to find today as 40 years ago. Of course, changing your identity has gotten much harder, because it's now a going concern.

‘Takedown”, (also, “Track Down” in some countries)2000. A bad movie based on a (in my opinion) horribly biased book by John Markoff of the NYT, who involved himself in the investigation and eventual prosecution driven by the revenge by one of Kevin’s foils, Tsutomu Shimomura.

@@doggonemess1 I think that may be due to the huge controversy surrounding the film's release (and creation) in the US. Many in the hacking community were up in arms over it. I believe it pretty much destroyed the film's US release. Don't remember exactly what went down and how it went down but I know there were protests outside of the studio's HQ and 2600 mag (of course) were a big part of it all. Oooh yeah.. Much of it had to do with the fact that kevin was still awaiting trial, I believe! And the film was portraying him exactly as Markhoff/Shimomura depicted him in their book, Takedown (which Kevin vehemently disagreed with). Anyway it's kind of interesting. I don't remember all the details after all this time but I'm sure there is a lot of info on youtube alone.

There were a few already, although it was based on a very controversially based on the BS book written by a journalist Johnathan Littmann. The movie is called Takedown, but it is really lame and it is very far from the crazy epic exploits that Kevin actually did in real life. Typical Hollywood crap. It is so crappy that it was marketed with a even crappier name in the US: "Hackers 2" or "Track Down"

In the 80's, I wanted to program, at age 15 or so, and went to Bell Labs, made an appointment, and they took me on a tour, gave me a phone to phone in, and the modem, and books, etc, and bought me lunch. I was there for the full 8 hour day, and they even played bocce ball at lunch. I was honest about whom I was, but I was shocked at how friendly they were, and giving me access to phone in, and half a dozen books. That is a 180, from where we are today. Of course, I did not do anything unethical. today, you would not get past the door.

85% of Corporate losses are sourced from employees who felt betrayed by their masters. {source: Mitnick's book} Focusing on the 15% of losses that a exogenous to the Corporate structure is disingenuous at best. Corporations are their own worst enemy, which is a systemic consequence of contradictions in ownership and value-distribution. Just as Clayton Christensen predicted, all corporations fail, eventually, from their own systemic inadequacies to account for the Social Management fallacies that they institute within their governance methodologies. Hackers aren't the problem, they' re just a symptom of a larger order problem.

Really the only difference between Mitnick and Bill Gates, or Sergey Brin, or Zuckerberg is that he didn't think about how hacking could make him rich. He just did it as pranks but was likely an even more powerful dual-hemisphere thinker like a Steve Jobs with his artistic and linear lobes well developed if he had the right guidance or impetus. This guy is the Godfather of all true digital divergence and rebellion.

If I understand you correctly, your contention is that Mitnick had both high level social and technical skills. I agree. You seem to have a higher opinion of Jobs than I though. If it was not for Woz and his contributions, Jobs would have probably had modest success and/or sold weed out of a VW bus. That's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

The ironic part, though, is how they show you can't trust anyone out there, then pitch this relatively unknown no, cred service that can't even afford proper ad campaigns and expect you to trust them with a payment all of your other info I mean ALL of it, and expect you trust them to protect you with worthless unnecessary services you can do yourself free and effortlessly everyone wants to make sleazy money these days they don't realize you can be successful actually helping people and that deceiving them is always gonna render you despicable eventually...I was about to subscribe, too. aaha how lame
