Why do you say “weight” is Fg. I learn it as the force normal.

i thought if there IS an accelaration there IS NO (force normal) NF

Acceleration occurs when the forces are unbalanced, the net force is not zero.

Why do these videos only talk about going up? I know I’ve seen videos claiming that your weight would be normal in an elevator going down at a constant velocity. They say that because anything different would mean there’s a net force greater than zero, which would break f=ma. This flat out false. Why can’t I find those videos anymore? If the elevator is going down at a constant velocity, say 1 meter per second, then think about it. You’re roughly 10% of the way to free fall. Einstien’s guy who falls off the ladder is weightless because free fall. In an elevator going down, even at constant velocity, a percentage of your potential energy from gravity is being converted to kinetic energy which means you can’t push on the scale as hard. Just take the problem to the extreme. Weightlessness doesn’t just suddenly snap on at a certain speed (unless you’re in a rocket that just shut off its engines). You instead gradually become more and more weightless as you approach free fall speed. This does NOT violate the second law because there is still no net force. Saying you stay the same weight violates law of conservation of energy. When you go up on the elevator at a constant velocity, your weight is indeed the same because none of your potential energy is being converted to kinetic energy in that. However going down is completely different.
