Just connect the two units' link jacks together on the rear panels with a ¼" unbalanced (TS) cable, and press the "link" switch on the front panel. Then the gain reduction level on both will follow whichever Shelford Channel is compressing more. 👍

My only gripe with the Newton channel is that the attack of the compressor is too slow. Ps do you sell matched pairs of either?

i had a shelly. greatest thing ive ever owned but the knobs are tiny and too close together. sold it for the chandler strip. if the shelly was 2U and 1073 size knobs you would be burying me with it

Nice video but main difference is - price. Shelford cost double the price of Newton but isn't twice better. In such price difference,its not even same category but they share concept - channel strip. I think with Shelford price RND want to hit few top (Avalon, Manley) strips like HIQ device as it is, but Newton price is where HIQ channel strip belong - 2k$. It sound to me from RND "hey, we need that price range for Shelford, but if you want almost same preamp with same amount of harmonics (-6db, silk blue,/red), you have it for only 2k". RND perspective is , SC is different and not better so it must be different for double price. In reality SC ( from mine POW) should be around 3k$ for difference it has compare to Newton. SC price of 4k$ is just for "king of preamp" price and to be in same category with some others in that price range. RND make Newton little different (not less better) with few less linking options to justify that price but in terms of what we like from Rupert is mainly preamp so it's almost the same on both. Only Newton and 5211( just don't have input gain variable like SC) from all RND preamps share almost same specs (silk red/blue and -6db output) like Shelford.

@@bradleypower4803The input transformer makes a big difference compared to pre amps that only have an output transformer. Also, some of RND product have inputs that act like transformer inputs but are not. I think this design has a cleaner sound. But I’m going off of memory and it’s been a few years since I analyzed all of their products.

@@bradleypower4803 Input transformer on Shelford preamp section is only difference between those two preamps but RND always stated that most of color/saturation that vintage preamps deliver is from output transformer - Silk, and both have identical. Input stage on others preamps (except Shelford) including Newton is electronically controlled, as I know.

@@onethousandtwonortheast8848 I think you are correct . All Portico RND concept of preamps have electronically comtroled input signal which delivers cleaner signal than Shelford. Any transformer on input stage mean less clean signal.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. We do feel the need to state that "twice better" is very subjective - some might feel the Shelford is easily more than "twice better" if the Newton doesn't fit their needs, but others might feel the Newton offers exactly what they're looking for. And trust us, the Shelford is not priced where it is just to be the "king of preamps" - a Shelford Channel simply costs much more to build than a Newton Channel. Those particular vintage-style topologies (transformer-gain mic pre, inductor EQ, diode bridge comp) use different (pricier) components. There's no objective right or wrong choice here, but one definitely costs more to manufacture...

Shelfords mid band is inspired by a 1073 and it has a 900 choice instead of a 700. Im confused…

@@jenssorquist172 Mid section on SC is bit different from 551, 5052 and 5051 (Shelford moduls for console) which all three have 700 and Shelford channel strip only have 900 from all this Inductor type EQs.

@@CHILE_TZ Thanks I know, more close to a 1073. But in the video he says that the Shelfords mid band is inspired by a 1073 and I don’t think it’s fair to say that when there is 900 instead of 700. Why not have 700?
