You guys should make a Shelford Channel Home/Project studio console! 4, 6, or 8 channels of Shelford goodness with a summing section, that can fit on a typical project/home studio desk. I've been dreaming of that since I got one of the first Shelford Channels.

Not to nitpick... but, when you say a "custom" transformer, I think each individual transformer on each part of each channel are all slightly different. Therefore being customized for specifically that channel. So the transformer on the input of the pre on channel 1 would be different from the input on the pre on channel 10 and different from the eq strip on channel 6 etc... or are all the mic pre input transformers the same on all channels and all boards? Because that wouldn't be custom. That would just be the standard transformer for the input on mic pres for Neve consoles. The word custom means something. You can't mass produce "custom" things. They're individual creations... custom!
@RupertNeveDesigns12 күн бұрын
A fair point. We use the word "custom" to refer to the fact that our audio transformers are designed in-house (a rarity in our industry), are purpose-built for each circuit (i.e. Shelford Channel mic input, 5052 EQ output, 5088 group return, etc), and are not used by any other brands. But you're correct in that the output transformers of each 5052 module, for example, are identical to one another - otherwise our equipment's performance would not be consistent from module to module and unit to unit.
@hulkslayer62612 күн бұрын
@RupertNeveDesigns Thanks for the response and the clarification. That's kinda what I assumed. But wasn't 100% sure since the word was used so many times. I thought maybe, after each board was assembled and tested, there were transformers literally wound to the specific specifications of that board and how the circumstances worked together to make sure everything performed identically. That kind of process would normally never enter my mind... but you ARE Neve, so... 🤷 lol Wasn't sure and figured I'd ask. Glad I did. Hope you all have a wonderful day and end of your year 😊

The crazy part is how cheap the majority of the components in them are these days. They just don't make the old Neves any more. Their digital desks use cheap PCs and have noisy fans. Truth is, times have changed and if you are going to spend this kind of money, you might as well hire a starving college engineer and build one yourself.
@jonathonmcmillan941012 күн бұрын
Good luck with the starving college student engineer. You're not getting anything out of them (I'm not a starving student anymore, but I was one once, and I've had to clean up a ton of messes they left as a professional). And no, the components aren't cheap. Again, good luck with that. Don't let your ignorance get the best of you.
@RupertNeveDesigns12 күн бұрын
Rupert Neve Designs does not build any "digital desks", though there are other brands (with whom we are sometimes confused) who do. We make the 5088, which is fully discrete and built with extremely high-quality components: rupertneve.com/history

@@RupertNeveDesigns Ahh yes. This is where we hear how Neve Electronics, founded by Rupert Neve in 1961, and Rupert Neve Designs, founded in 2005 by Rupert and Evelyn Neve are "totally different companies, bro!" You know what? Fine. Play that game if you must. But here's the thing. If you put your name on something, and that name comes with a reputation designed and marketed to sell an item, and more importantly; you get paid for it, then that is on you. And when a Genesys console costs 100 grand here in this country (like wtf) then you'd expect 100 grand's worth of kit. Not a badly built PC with noisy fans wrapped in a half-arsed PVC console. And by the way, as far as this console goes on this page. It's nice, no doubt. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't all jelly. Honestly my only real gripe with it is the squiggly signature on the VUs, it's very distracting. But here's the thing. For a quarter of a million US dollars (and the rest, Christ even knows what thing costs here) I expect better components. I legitimately do. Because for a quarter of a mil, you can get some incredible custom consoles built. Hell, bump that up to double and they'll even ship the engineer with the console to help build your studio. And with what I've seen here, and the corporate games you guys are famous for playing, it's obvious all you really are is a brand name these days no different to Behringer. Just a lot more expensive and even worse customer support.

This is a great question for Rupert Neve’s engineering team to answer. Unfortunately it was answered by the media team, so let me help them with this: if you don’t carefully design your own transformers for such a demanding audio application, then once you cascades a couple of off-the-shelf transformers you end up with so much phase rotation that the production would sound awful. For the transformer to sound ‘color-less’ you need to design it very carefully. Actually you do know that it’s very custom because a regular audio transformers can be as small as 10mm in size whereas these ones are like 50mm in size which implies 25 times the core volume! By the way, the Rupert Neve magic sound is not provided by the transformers, which need to be cristal clear as mentioned before, but by DC biasing them. That’s what generates that silky sound that the brand is famous for.

I really like the collaboration Rupert Neve did with Alpha Theta to make the Euphonia rotary mixer which contains Rupert Neve transformers on each channel. It sounds warm, organic, and the way it can sum separate tracks is simply amazing. It's the best DJ mixer I have ever owned. I think you should do more high end DJ mixer collaborations like that.

I would Jump on a 5088 in minute if there was an update. I love the sound just Wish there was their was some type of inline design (Small fader/Knob) and inserts on the channels. The product RND makes is second to none, The sound is amazing!!! Every piece they do is just stellar
@Saitamasensei5115 күн бұрын
I almost went another route for the same reasons but I’m so glad I didn’t. Having the small fader path is super convenient but nothing that can’t be worked around with enough I/O. But I’m a weirdo who loves to patch things differently every time to figure out what works best so there’s that. Inserts on every channel would’ve been nice admittedly but I don’t mind being forced to simplify and process with group inserts more often.
