Absolutely marvellous. Do you have any tips on to approach jazz learning as a classically taught (and mostly self taught) musician?
@PortmanTone7 жыл бұрын
Nobody told me to learn this way (I'm self taught in jazz too)--it's just that looking back at however I began to take an interest in jazz, these are the sorts of things I just began to do. However, the obvious "tip" that everyone will give you is to listen to and transcribe as much as you can. This provides you with all of the musical intuition you may desire to allow the following to fall into place: -Familiarize yourself with the harmonic cliches and learn your reharmonization techniques and substitutions. Practice these things along with any licks that go along with them in every key. -Get yourself seated at a keyboard (use an online one if you have to), and familiarize your ears with the sound of chord extensions (9, 11, 13, and their alterations) and altered scales to really fatten up the tonal palette of your chord changes. As a means to make the learning process even easier (but try not to shortcut yourself), relate each extended chord to a hybrid chord or polychord. -Familiarize yourself with quartal harmonies (This is less important than the above advice early in your studies, but is really great to learn because the quartal sound really helps to yield a modern jazz color) -When ad libbing (or trying to write an interesting line) really try to practice playing non-chord tones and using pitches outside of the key. If you don't go out of your way to get your ears to "open" to this, you can never really feel comfortable getting yourself to play in this manner--and the most interesting sounds result from this. -Learn the idioms of jazz rhythms. Definitely listen to recordings with swing at many tempos (tempi?) and practice scales or something with varying depths of swing. Even in music with predominantly straight rhythms, it's cool to have a bit of a swing element in them. You also need to be attentive to the feel of syncopation and articulation when listening or playing. A lack of care here definitely kills performances. Have fun, Amit :)

thank you! going right into it also, as a very new multi instrumentalist i struggle with practicing every single instrument every day. do you have any routine about practicing instruments?
@PortmanTone7 жыл бұрын
I don't practice every instrument every day. I can't do that. I practice one of them every day, because that's how proficient I feel the need to improve on. I practice on two others a bit less frequently because I'm more proficient in them, and don't want to lose the skill (I play them alot, but I don't really PRACTICE strictly, don't get me wrong). I used to practice all the rest way more frequently, but once I got to a serviceable level of proficiency, I backed off on them to give myself time to improve on instrument#1. I now just show them some love occasionally just so I don't forget what feels right. At some point in the future, I'll definitely end up making one of those instruments take on the #1 spot-to-practice.

This is great! I love the use of violins in jazz! Also, I love how you use a lot different styles of jazz. The solos sounded great! You have an incredible start for your channel! You have potential to go very far, learn a lot from others, and grow as a musician. Just curios, how long have you been playing tenor?
