Two words: character development. He didn't kill the flower or let the dog die because he didn't know if he was better than them. Once he became the ultimate life form, he could do anything a dog or flower could. He could do both the things a flower and dog could do better than either could do alone. Kars saw how Joseph's deception put him a step above himself. So he incorporated deception into his strategy. When Joseph hypocritically calls him out for it, Lars looses respect for Joseph. And I do think that respect is the operative word there. He didn't think he had the right to rule the world until after he surpassed his competition. The extinction of his own species except for a handfull he'd need later was justified to him since by then his bone blades and ACDC's boiling blood put the two above the rest of their species as far as Kars was concerned. Was he the best villain? No; but there was some consistency.
@adityamohan17734 жыл бұрын
Ur theory holds true if he felt the same way about humans. You might say humans were his prey, so why? We see that Pillar Men do respect worthy humans. So Kars is expected to show the same hesitance to kill a human. Or a soldier. Hell.. Kars even thinks Santana was a weak child. I know respect isn't the word, but contempt or hesitation in those two cases is not consistent throughout

I don’t really mind the “I want to rule the world” motivation. I think a lot of people could relate to it - people want to be in charge. We live in a world of meritocracy and it only makes sense people that think they are the best would strive to be the best and oppose their superiority. We live in a world of politicians, CEOs even shop floor supervisors. All are there (in general) because they were better than other people and were motivated enough to get there. Kars and similar villains are just at the extreme end of that. However, I am much more interested in their road to becoming that way, that’s what I think is lacking with Kars. Edit: impose

Honestly, the only thing I remember about Kars is that he was trolled by Joseph in the end. I think one thing Kars is also missing is any real connection to Joseph. We have Dio being a former brother to Jonathan, DIO killing Kakyoin and and Joseph temporarily, Kira almost single handedly taking down to whole DiU team by himself, Diavolo killing Narancia in a brutal and detestable fashion as well as Abbhaccio, . . . . . (Manga Spoilers below for Part 6 and 7) Pucci resets the universe and Valentine killing Gyro, Most Jojo villains have left a tangible mark in their respective part but Wamuu is the one to defeat Ceasar and Kars just plays around with Lisa Lisa for the most part.

I like to think that Kars was super serious because be viewed himself on the same level as any other life form. Willing to take more damage to avoid a flower or attacking cars to save animals. But once he became Perfect Kars, his arrogance led him to believe he was a God. A being above all life. Thus he lost his former respect for fellow lifeforms on his level and acted as if he were a God
@Xeno4554 жыл бұрын
@Lionard Kirsch I personally believe that has to do with three things, making Kars a bit of a paradoxical being, but one worth understanding. From my understanding of his character, it's not that he didn't care about human life. More so that he didn't respect human life as much as other life. Why, you may ask? Well, because humans are both destroying most other life just by existing, and because hamon warriors (their worst nemesis) are predominately human. A third reasoning, would be that humans are used to create vampires, which the Pillar Men see as food. To them, it's no different than a Lion watching as a Gazelle succumbs to injuries. That's at least, what I personally believe. So he respects and loves all life, but he can't find himself respecting human life because they destroy other life, plus they're a food source, and able to destroy them too. It brings up the age old adage, "If you kill a killer, who is in the wrong?"

@@NewWorldReview Yeah but it's not a necessity. I don't need complex backstories for Diavolo and the DCAU's Lex Luthor and Joker to be some of my favorite antagonists. Kars was missing more presence and interaction with characters, not a more relatable motivation. That's what Dio, Wamuu, Kira, and Diavolo have despite having simplistic motivations. Maybe bring back Kars. How he came back will just say the alien Mikitaka Hazekura, found this weird rock in space. An gave in to adult Josuke & Okuyasu who comes too America too show it to a 90+ year old Joseph. Maybe, we could also bring back the Zeppeli family. We can say Ceaser had an illegitimate child now his grandchild appear to help the Joestars. And give Kars & Santana a stand. She can make anything tie together into anything or sever those ties. She uses it to kill pucci, and sunddenly jotaro wakes up, jolyne tied the disc back to him. Except jolynes gone. The only thig left is a note saying: GO TO EGYPT. And jotaro is a bit freaked out, so he grabs any and all joestars. Josuke, giorno, shizuka, and they board a flight to egypt. But somethings off. Not a single stand user attacks them Somehow they just get to egypt, and they find dio's mansion, brought back by burnin down the house. Here jolyne reveals her ultimate plan: to destroy fate entirely. No more winning just because youre a joestar, no more magical fate arrows, everything is left to chance. Giorno tries to use requien, but she's already done ite, the artow doesn't work. Somehow they manage to almost beat her, but in her last moments, jolyne is all " fuck this, this is my part you dont get to win" and she completely destroys the threads all the way back to the beginning of time. Now it's a new world where things can completely play out different. Pillar men can evolve into something new. Joestars and brandos can kinda get along. I always thought it was very clear what the scenes with the dog and plant represented. They where organisms that could preform actions that he could not thus he had no right to crush that flower nor did he feel humans had a right to run over the dog thus saving it. The reason he killed humans willy nilly is because to him he has surpassed humams in generally every regard outside of the sun which he already was making strides to overcoming. That's why once he achieved his ultimate form he didn't care about killing that squirrel. Its because he was now above every organisms on the planet and he now felt he had the right to kill what he wanted. I actually enjoyed the fact that quirk of his personality wasn't just outright stated or focused on too much but thas just me. Also in general I enjoyed him as villian because of his alien like feeling as a character because honestly that's what he was. He's way of thinking was just something you can't relate to because you're not meant too. Sure his want for power was overtly simple but at the same time when you have capabilites he had why complicate your objective with unnecessary justification when you cam simply push forward and take what you want.
@BelieveIt10514 жыл бұрын
I don't think Kars is a bad villain who can't be understood. He saved the dog and flowers because he values life that fights to survive. It's a quality he believes he is fulfilling by conquering the sun and becoming the ultimate life-form. The dog was fighting to survive in harsh streets. The flowers were fighting to survive in low temperatures and a pit with little sunlight. Conversely, what would have killed these things were those of stupidity. A drunk motorist for the dog, Joseph's efforts to grab the stone and fight Kars while falling down the pit for the flowers. So Kars killed the driver to save the dog, and knocked himself out of the way of the flowers to counter Joseph's actions that would have made Kars land on the flowers in the first place. We see Kars even scold himself after awakening when he neglectfully crossed Whamu's shadow, which resulted in Whamu instinctively attacking him. As for the squirrel, he stupidly went for Kars' trap, which is why Kars killed it just as he would any other life form that showed poor survival instincts. Playing Lisa Lisa like a guitar was just to goad Joseph into making a mistake. Kars did want to help his race at first, but he saw them as worthless when they opposed him. Yet he still accepted Esidisi, and took the newborns Whamu and Sanviento with them. So it isn't like he wanted perfection for only himself. Even after dismissing Sanviento as just a well-trained guard dog, he didn't kill him. I think what took away from Kars' character was the goofy way in which he fought and "died" in the end. Feathers that turn into piranha just sounds like some little kid imagining a way to beat another kid in an imaginary battle. But at least it didn't involve an invisibility cloak. Also, getting blasted into space was dumb, as was his inability to figure out a way back down. In truth, Sanviento was actually the strongest Pillar Man out of the four of them. He's the only one to have survived Joseph's hamon blasts without the aid of the Aja-equipped Stone Mask. Joseph needed Stroheim's help to even stand a chance against Sanviento, and ultimately only defeated him with the help of the sun. Unlike the others, Sanviento is still alive and conscious.

A lot of my thoughts have already been stated in other comments so I will give a shortened version: I completely disagree with many points made here, and something I haven’t seen mentioned is how important Kars is to all of JoJo. He created the stone masks, which Dio used to become a vampire and part one basically set the stage for the entirety of JoJo. So barring all characterization, Kars has had an impact on the series since the beginning. That aside, Kars’ motivation of power isn’t that simple, it’s a desire to be the greatest THING, and be able to prove it; while most of us wouldn’t be able to relate to that exact desire… it would be foolish to assume you wouldn’t want to be the best at what you do. For example, you probably would want to be the best player at a video game, or the best at speaking a language… and that desire can lead to a sort of understanding of how Kars feels. Kars does have more depth beyond his motivation too, we see how he respects those who adapt and survive; hence why we see him using Joseph’s trademark “Fight with trickery and deception”. As for the dog (though I don’t about the flower), I’ve always interpreted it as “He doesn’t actually care for the life of the dog, but rather, teach humans their place”. Thematically speaking, Kars has a lot in common with the Icarus, you know, the guy that fell when he tried to touch the sun? When Kars finally “touched the sun”, he found himself defeated shortly thereafter, and if the symbolism was enough… he grows angelic-like wings that Icarus is often depicted as having. I’ll admit I’m not the best with arguing my points but I hope you can understand my reasonings.

I was honestly ready to not like this video, but the way you’ve explained it has actually changed my mind. Like when people say that Kars cares about earth I didn’t see it because he always killed people in a way that I felt like he did it just because he felt like it. But once you mentioned he saved the dog and didn’t land on flower I realized then. The part failed to show that he cared about nature because he was just always power hungry and when he killed squirrel after becoming the perfect life form to me that just showed that he didn’t care about any life but his own. Overall great review and I know see the issue with kars as a character.

I don't fully agree, but this was a nice topic to talk about. I think, in the end, he IS a disappointing character who basically becomes a wholly different person after Whamu passes away. What I DON'T agree with is his motivation being too unidentifiable. We all have things we want to change about ourselves, even if we're already pretty great. The drive for self improvement is powerful, & important! Kars' villainous flaw is that he was an asshole about it. He's basically a Sith Lord, willing to use & abuse anything & everything to further his own ends. I wish we got more of the Kind, respectful Kars before he transformed so the transition was smoother.

@jamesbiggs83974 жыл бұрын
@@elijahjarobi Here's the thing; as scheming as Joseph is, he technically never betrayed the conditions of the chariot battle. It was still just a one on one fight between him & Whamu. If anything the Pillarmen put Joseph at a disadvantage by forcing him to fight in a combat style he never used before, but Whamu probably has. On top of that, he EXPLICITLY said he had never intended to fight Lisa Lisa one-on-one. He was gonna pull his shady trick from the Start. This implies he was dishonorable from the get go, and you could see shades of that when he didn't want to play "Put-the-Poison-in-the-Joestar" & trying to kill Joseph ANYWAY before Whamu got his rematch. But then why was his treatment of Whamu so different? When we first see their dynamic, Whamu ATTACKS Kars, but Kars is like "Oh my bad, I am in the wrong this time." He goes from that to "Whamu you idiot, you utter buffoon; you died a dumb idiot death." For that matter, why would he even CARE to avenge Esidisi if he was such a cold, unfeeling monster? I just don't buy that because Joseph is a Trickster archetype, Kars just decides that he can't beat him without abandoning the ideals & philosophy of his only companions without any guilt or regret.

I finished watching Battle Tendency's finale just a few mins ago, and I gotta agree with you. After seeing ACDC and Waamu, I really wanted to see what Kars would be like. All I can say is, he succeeded as an antagonist, but failed as a character. The pieces were there, like him passing a comment about how "immortality is boring" (ironic for a guy aiming to become the ultimate life form), not letting the flowers and the puppy get hurt, his backstory subtly drawing parallels between him and Dio, and him even managing to achieve his goal. But those moments were just so vague and unexpanded that we didn't get to see much beyond "Superhuman guy allergic to sun becomes ultimate life form and not allergic to sun now but has his ass kicked into space by a badass clown" TLDR the main problem with Kars is that we didnt get to see more if him And living under the shadow of Dio just makes it worse. PS. I don't think he's inconsistent, cuz there's not much to compare anyways.

Unfortunately for Kars, Part 2 was an afterthought for Araki. I don't remember exactly where, but I read an interview where he states that he needed a story to enlarge the gap between Part 1 and 3. The intention was always to bring Dio back, however Araki realized that putting Part 3 immediately after Part 1 would be too soon after Dio's "death". It's why he thought of Caesar not as a character, but as a power up for Joseph, as well. That's likely why Kars is such a poorly written villain for his story. I mean, Araki already demonstrated in Part 1 that he had characterization down with Dio (even in Part 2 with Wham! and ACDC).

@jordanpugh97994 жыл бұрын
In terms of him(Kars) becoming boring and forgettable for not being human enough and utterly devoid of humanity I shall point you toward one H.P. Lovecraft. I'm not sure if that's the problem exactly. I definitely agree with your points this far aside from that one. I think what actually may have happened is that at this time Araki didn't want to rock the boat too, too much in terms of his formula (which was still being developed). He even stated that he really didn't want to make Joseph buff but only did it out of a fear that people might not recognize the series. This makes me believe he was definitely trying to play it safe in the first two parts hence the overly generic setup and story. Not only was Kars bland, Caesar and his story were bland, Hamon/ the ripple was becoming bland, and to top it all off despite the action being over the top it was its own level of ironic blandness due to the whole terminator/ Fist of the North Star influence that dominated the 80's. He didn't really get "Araki creative" with his villains until Yoshikage Kira. Nearly everything before then from Dio, to Kars to the smorgasbord of part 3's "rogue's gallery".
@kirby123904 жыл бұрын
New World Review, I always thought Part 2 would be a bit better if Caesar, fought and killed Eisisdisi on the island where they trained, it would have given him a cool fight (since the only cool one he has is one where he loses) It would provide a better reason as to why he becomes so rash and runs in at The Pillarmen's base, it would create a bigger gap showing the difference between Whamuu and Eisidisi, I think everything else is fine, and Lisa Lisa is the mentor who taught them how to use hamon so she doesn't particularly need her own fight, but Caesar I think could've benefited and taken that fight to seem like a more useful side character, not that he isn't useful at all, more like, useful in combat aside from just assisting Joseph who kills all of the pillar men himself. (I know Caesar technically helped kill Eisidisi when he possessed Suzy Q but Joseph was still there and I think it wasn't nearly a good enough demonstration of his abilities. I would love to hear if anyone else agrees or disagrees.
@ARC--5973 Жыл бұрын
Very true, I also felt that Caesar was robbed of a win in part 2. Although I would switch the order of the Kars and Wammu fights, with Kars losing to Lisa Lisa and making Wammu the final antagonist
@Reed5016 Жыл бұрын
If it were me, I’d have Lisa Lisa fight Eicidici, Caesar fight (and beat) Wham/Wamuu, and Joseph and Stroheim kicking the shit out of Kars/Cars. That way, all of the characters would have their time to shine. Also, the way Caesar lost could’ve been avoided, he just chose the stupidest way possible to fight Wham, which is out of character. If he had kicked him from below or uppercut him, he would’ve won. His death was also useless, as Wamuu/Wham had fully recovered after Caesar fought him, and Caesar wasn’t even mentioned in the episodes following his death. Hell, his father left a greater impact on the series, and he was only mentioned in a flashback. They totally did him dirty just because they needed a character death to build tension. It’s a shame, really. They did Lisa Lisa dirty too, but that had more to do with the publishers and editors not wanting her to be as badass as Araki did.

@alexander_Izunia4 жыл бұрын
Well to be fair Kars was just meant to be the final boss, but he’s still an interesting character because we know that he has some morals. For instance he respects nature and wildlife to an extent, showed some respect towards Joseph during their first fight and respected his comrades Esidisi and Wamuu. He still wants power and overall wishes to be on top, but you cannot deny that there is more depth to his character than what was shown in the anime or the manga.

We have to get by on inference from the small bits and pieces Araki drops in when trying to analyse Kars. Perhaps he wasn’t fully characterised by explicit means, but we can take what concrete elements we have about him and discuss how they might interact with each other and the resulting implications following that. He’s a scientist who sought transcendence for his people over their weakness to the Sun. He displays respect and compassion for nature. These two facts point toward the likelihood that mastering life under the Sun’s rays would fulfil a wish to be closer to nature, to be ‘more like it’ so to speak. To his mind, humans are both apart from and below nature, and Kars wished for the pillar man race to be neither of those things. Of course that seemed to change somewhat when he underwent his transformation into the Perfect Lifeform - he had ascended ‘past’ nature in his effort to reach it, in an ironic twist remaining just as seperate from it as when he started. But his very existence had shifted the hierarchy now, and nature was no longer an aspirational object for Kars. Hence his disregard and ambivalence toward it after his transformation.

World domination isn't a weak motivation just because most people can't connect to it. If the readers care enough to think "Stop him!" then the motivation is perfectly functional. We don't have to see ourselves in every villain, otherwise Palpatine would be worth pennies. (Not Disney's Palpatine obviously)
@NewWorldReview4 жыл бұрын
Palpatine wasn't the primary antagonist of the OT though, Vader was. Palpatine was allowed to exist as pure evil because Vader was doing the narrative heavy lifting. In the prequel trilogy he also wasn't the main antagonist because it was about following Anakin's journey to reach that role. Once again, Palpatine was allowed to exist on the side lines and embody pure evil whilst someone else did the heavy lifting. And yeah...let's not mention Disney.
@strongsuccessfulweeb14003 жыл бұрын
IMO i dont think we can ever dig in with Kars' motivation simply because he isn't human..we take for granted our ability and necessity to bask under the sunlight..but for his race its a death sentence..he merely wanted his race to live under the sun and rule the world in the process..straightforward thats it..for the impact? come on he is the creator of the stone mask..without him there will be no Dio and we all know how much Dio impacted the story from parts 1 onward

About what you talked in 7:48: I think he had respect for every lifeform which features powers that he cannot possess. That's why he has respect for the dog (having tail and furr) or the flowers (they can do photosynthesis, which he cannot do). He doesn't respect humans because he has everything they have. That's also why he loses every respect for nature when he became the ultimate lifeform. He can have every power any lifeform has, so he doesn't respect them anymore. He's now above every lifeform in every feature possible.

I firmly believe that all you need to do to fix Kars is to not have him want to take over the world or go crazy after he transforms. If Kars had simply looked at Joseph after transforming and said, "Do as you please, I'm off to see the world." He would have been much more intimidating and consistent. He had ultimate power and clearly didn't care about anyone else. I know he says he cared about them, but the dude does ZERO things to honor their memory. I think having Joseph struggle with the idea that he's fighting someone that doesn't want to fight anymore would be interesting. It turns Kars from a final boss into the antithesis of Joseph, who almost always has less power than the person he fights. Maybe he'd even predict Kars' next words incorrectly, because Joseph hasn't grasped that Kars is too self-centered to care about fighting someone he knows he'd beat. Imagine Joseph's reaction when he finds Kars simply spending time in a sunny meadow, enjoying the knowledge that he will never again have to fear anything. Kars consistently showed a respect for nature and was always limited in his exploration of it. I think a shred of vulnerability in that regard would make Kars infinitely better. He's a dude that was born into a tribe that was "perfectly evolved" but had to live underground and hide from the sun. If all he wanted was the ability to see what daytime nature was, or even just explore the depths of the ocean, he would be EXTREMELY memorable. Because as a dude from ancient times, murder would be a reasonable tool in his mind. People used to kill each other to get what they wanted, and Kars was no exception. In that context, he's just doing what he thinks he's supposed to do in order to get what he wants. He wouldn't see himself as the bad guy and he'd even have room to feel sadness over ACDC and Wamuu never achieving his newfound freedom. Can you imagine if Battle Tendancy had ended with a villain that simply didn't want to fight? I'd have remembered it.

Personally I've always thought Karss is pretty epic. I like him over part 1 and 3 dio, and probably above Diavolo as well(the other take over za worudo villains of the series). Some of his motivations are really cool, as someone who's done research into potential ways to get immortality in the future and the big debate in regards to it. I'd also say he definitely cared about his two friends dying to the hands of Joseph, which led him to irrationally chasing joseph once he got the power and then dying because of it. To me, it's a pretty damn cool way to end it off. Also, I'd say Karss just opposes life that opposes him, such as humans. The squirrel was him literally going crazy with a surge of power, a concept we also saw with dio at the final part 3 fight

I am rewatching Battle tendency and here's what I think about Kars. He was never meant to be the strongest. Wammu is the only one with a long range attack. Kars and Esidisi both have a short and medium range. Kars, though, is the mind of the operations. Kars is a genius. He does things efficiently. The way he slices Stroheim's cabin and kills all the soldiers at once. I don't think of Kars as Hitler but the German scientists who switched sides during war. Kars is unimaginably curious. I think the prime reason for his want of stone of Aja is limitless life for limitless curiousity. I know he was poorly developed but with the selective scenes we get of it, we can see how he is. Kars, though is not the strongest of pillar men, has an immense ego. He wants to show off people. Or atleast himself. Remember the laugh he gives when he evades falling on the plant? He was enjoying himself. It is not his love for plant but to show off. That's why he plays guitar with Lisa Lisa. That's why he plays with Joesph. Kars is an intelligent, egoist and a weak by nature bastard. As for his saving a dog, I think he did that because the puppy came near him. And those humans were a general ruckus.
