Among the great tennis players, John is a very gifted tennis legend. He is also a very interesting person, smart and very relevant in his discussions and analysis. We loved you John during this brillant eighties period and we continu to love today (2023).

Tennis was huge in the 70’s and 80’s, the style of play was so entertaining. Serve and volley tennis was great to watch

The best shot that I ever saw, is the touch backhand volley cross court. In fact, so is the backhand, and the serve of McEnroe. How the serve originated, when McEnroe didn't want to use the big swing for his strokes, is amazing. I think the backhand cross court volley is so imaginative, that I can play it just like McEnroe, without having played for some time.

I thoughtJohn was a good player in his day and admired his skills.when he first started in the booth at least he knew something, but he has become an embarrassing blowhard. His “bromance” with Nadal was pathetic: we used to bet on how quickly, no matter who was playing, he would bring up Nadal. Unlike British announcers, he and Carillo don’t watch the game; they tell stories, gossip, chatter through point. I think there may be a thing in men’s sport where the slighter player always admires/envies the big muscles, “athletic” player. Also, every year John anoints some young player as absolutely future # 1 - and its a curse! ( Andreas Seppi, Delpo....)

McEnroe seems bored half the time with these questions... because he's been asked the same old questions again and again before. At least he's consistent with his answers.

I really had know idea about John and his reputation lets call it,I was playing tennis on my own not really watching matches in TV....but any casual conversation I'd have and I would mention that I teach tennis first thing they'd say what do u think of MacEnroe, who id say...JK,well I didn't see the matches and didn't know,my parent did I should of ask them....hold on ill be right back, gotta make a call....JK,know honest if I didn't see it for myself and the match and the scene I not one to believe what people say,and I don't play that way,I'm more like Borg and the majority of players...but its amazing how good your eye site is when u play tennis 6 or 7 hours a day so when some one makes a bad call u know pretty much u got screwed out of a good shot and a point the trouble is at points in the match that make or break a match or a player....

males when they get up in years start to grow hair in their ears and nose. the ear hair is easily taken care of when shaving or grooming. the nose hairs become a constant problem that tickle to total distraction and the only way to effectively remove the hair is by waxing. maybe John will learn this technique when the tickling becomes unbearable.

MacEnroe... so high on himself! Reporters have been massaging his ego for the past 20 years because they know there is a guy who loves nothing better than talk about himself. And he still thinks he matters in tennis.

McEnroe does matter in tennis and he always will. If he would have paid more attention to training/fitness in his mid twenties he would have won more grand slam singles titles. The tennis he played in 1984 would match up with anyone who has ever stepped on a tennis court. Mcenroe's physical talent was glorious but more importantly he was always extremely interesting which is not something that you can say about today's players.

First, John can you please tuck your shirt in before doing an interview? You look like you just rolled out of bed! Second, Federer the most beautiful player you've ever seen hit the ball???? Evonne Goolagong hit the tennis ball with much more fluidity and beauty than Federer! So did Maria Bueno! Third, at your peak in 1984, if you were to play against Nadal at his peak but require him to play with non-lubricated strings which allow him and the other current players to put 20% more spin on the ball than non-lubricated ,regular gut strings and require him to play with the graphite rackets that were available back in the mid-1980's, you would , as the old expression goes, "have a field day" defeating Nadal (except on clay)! You at your absolute peak during the 1984 Wimbledon tournament were playing at a higher level of play than Nadal. Fourth, to quote you, "you cannot be serious" in suggesting that you would only win 3 out of 10 matches against Federer! Don't you realize that Federer has an exceedingly mediocre record against good (Henman) and very good (Rafter) serve-and-volley players (0-3 versus Rafter and 7-6 versus Henman), which means by logical extension, that great serve-and-volley players like yourself, Laver, Sampras, Kramer, Edberg and Becker would be much more successful against Federer than good and very good (but not great) serve-and-volley players like Henman and Rafter respectively were during their careers on the men's pro tennis tour! C'mon John do a little more in-depth thinking before making assessments as to how your generation and other generations of great tennis players would fare against Federer, Nadal and Djokovic!
