I expect you as well as Tyson have never heard of Freeman Dyson. Dyson has made actual contributions to physics. Tyson, on the other hand, is a pop sci guy who often manages to botch his high school math and science. And completely botch his history. Here is Dyson's take: blogs.scientificamerican.com/news-blog/freeman-dyson-and-the-irresistible-2009-04-30/ Tyson's response? Slap Dyson with a label. DENIER! This is the ad hominem fallacy. Tyson and his ilk are ratcheting up the heat and noise in this debate and destroying the signal to noise ratio.

No planet can be fixed with weapons, unless you mean neutered, which means to render sterile. As fascinating is technology is, remember that seeking to resolve biological challenges with technology may not be the best approach. Just because something happens without humans causing it to happen does not mean that that happening is simple or inconsequential.

Rather than trading insults, perhaps take a different approach. Engage in a dialogue, a dialogue of inquiry, which sources the root to individual belief statements and explores them. Rather than closing down dialogue it is incumbent upon us all to open up dialogue. To summarise the interview, what Tyson is discussing is questions about the nature of science (NOS). My PhD in science education takes me to understand the pivotal nature of NOS as a human context dimension of scientific literacy. Much research has been done on establishing student and teacher understanding of NOS, and shows how education systems internationally have failed to develop informed understanding of NOS, leaving most of us identified as naive in NOS. This is what Tyson refers to as students being vessels, filled, graduating and then asked to perform. If they perform in science related fields or engage in scientific literacy discourse (e.g. comment forums such as this), they do so from a naive starting point. So find out first what is believed, what may be common, what is different, and only then seek to build informed understanding. Otherwise any forum becomes inundated by such inane comments we observe here. Such inane comments that take us far away from the purpose and effort of an interview such as this with Tyson.

@Jefferdaughter5 жыл бұрын
Nick - It is never to late to take education seriously. (Correction: "...taking school seriously...") In your defence, (I prefer the British spelling), school in the U.S.A. has become a tax-payer funded childcare service that also teaches children to do what those in authority tell them to do, and maybe also to trust whatever the experts tell us unquestioningly. Actually teaching a solid foundation of the basics - reading comprehension, the ability to communicate clearly in writing, and mathematics, plus enough of a basic understanding of science and history to give each of us the ability to function in a free republic - seems to be getting less emphasis. Language is as important as science, by the way. Otherwise we would have no way to communicate clearly, especially those things which either are not reducible to mathematics, or which none of us know how to communicate using math. The purpose of language is to facilitate clarity of communication.

Someone asks, "what one video under 20 minutes do you wish the entire world would watch and fully understand?" Me, "Neil deGrasse Tyson Explains How Science Works." (That's this one minute 3:09 - 17:01). There are many great videos about kindness, empathy, living a life of purpose, innovation, technology, etc. that compete for a very close second. The misunderstanding of the scientific process and the belief that it is "one of many ways" to understand the natural world is, in my opinion, the root of so many persistent problems we face today. They all have solutions that can only be discovered and implemented when we all have a singular common answer to the question, "how do we know what we know?"
