What a great memory! My first trip to Aussie was in 1956 on a Qantas Super Connie from SF to Sydney. I still have the little flight bag that I was given, and still remember my invitation to the flight deck - I was 5 years old. That trip took, as I recall, 36 hours with 24 hours flight time and several stops. I remember stopping in Suva in the middle of the night, walking out of the place, and getting smothered by the incredible humidity. Great Video - and Thank You!!!

Years ago Dad gave me his 1955 USAF aircraft recognition manual for the civilian Ground Observer Corps & page 164 says, "The exhaust stacks of practically all conventional aircraft engines glow cherry red from the tremendous heat of exhaust gasses. On some aircraft, flames can be seen roaring out of the exhaust stacks, occasionally giving the impression that the engine is on fire. This is particularly true when extra power is being used, as in takeoff or climbing. In darkenss, this glow or flame is often discernible from the ground ..."

Eventually abandoned again and destroyed by vandals. Hats off to all those who put in so much hard work to keep her airworthy and the few surviving aircrew that can still fly these legends. As a two-stroke motorcycle fan of fifty years or so, I’m quietly amazed at how these big radials manage to clean out and run so nicely after those big-oiled-up starts.
@ngauruhoezodiac31439 ай бұрын
The oil in a radial engine seeps into the bottom cylinders and that is why the engine has to be rotated 3 times before priming and why they blow a lot of smoke before the cylinders are cleared and the engine runs evenly. They also leak oil when cold.

I first fell in love with the L1049 Super Constellation (passenger version) from Bugs Bunny cartoons of the 50's. 15 years later, I was blessed to be assigned to the 552nd McClellan AFB) and the 79th (Homestead AFB). accruing close to 2500 flight hours on the EC-121 Super Connie with the USAF. Finest 3 engine aircraft ever built. And like a Harley, if she wasn't leaking oil, she wasn't running. Grab a spare chute for a pillow, your flight jacket to cover yourself (well, cover HALF of yourself), and let the steady drone of the 3350's lull you to a 2 hour nap that felt like6 hours of peaceful sleep. And FWIW, the FIRST "non-medical" female crew members in the military were surveillance radar operations on the Connie, back at the 79th, Homestead.
