Great looking equipment. Question: it appears that 90% of the van trailers are (what we call here in the US) "curtain sides".....not too much backing in to loading docks I guess. Would like to see some videos of loading/unloading operations.

In France lots of trailers are curtain sides Its used when you want to load something bigger than the doors (paper rolls for example)
@benmac940
@benmac940 2 жыл бұрын
No most places don't have reverse in loading docks as seems to be the norm in the USA. Generally open the curtain and forklift does it all from the side. Alot of the bigger warehouses etc have 2.4 meter forks so they do both sides in one go. The exception obviously being the reefer trailers but generally only the temp controlled warehouses have the reverse in docks.

Over here in the USA🇺🇸 we mostly have conventional cab semis. Back in the 1980s & down we had a mix of cabover & conventional cab semis. Then most of the cabover semis over here phased out & that's when more conventional cab ones took their places.
@SuperBigblue19
@SuperBigblue19 2 жыл бұрын
Changing the length rules sunk the cabover in the US. While easier to maneuver & back. They lacked comfort & safety needed for driving in a large country. I started in a cabover in 92. Imagine spending 6 weeks in a tiny European style cabover in the US? It sucked
@kevinrichards3288
@kevinrichards3288 2 жыл бұрын
@@SuperBigblue19 & not to forget in a head on crash with a car driven by a drunk driver or so, the cabover driver leaves the accident scene through the windshield. Also whenever a mechanic works on one, all of the driver's lose stuff inside the cab goes all over the place & sometimes break the windshield too because the mechanic has to tilt the cab up to get to the motor.
@S01NOR
@S01NOR 2 жыл бұрын
This may shock you, but cabovers have become better over the last 30-40 years. And no reason cabovers couldn’t have large sleepers for more comfortable living over longer periods of time. But where there is no market, there are no product.

That's a state hi way coming away from the capital mate, it's huge, there's plenty of room, that one in plimmerton's a bit tighter, but still do-able, all major road's are designed with trucks in mind, but if it's tight and you think you'll struggle ....just run into it in the middle so nobody tries to come with you or pass you, culture is mostly professional though, we're a considerate bunch down these ways. 😉👌 ....mostly. 😁

Carting metal (aggregates) is good work, it's put on, it falls off, no tieing it down although some material needs to be covered- big job back in the day, but now rolling covers can both be deployed in a minute, and if you're lucky they'll be electric, ...home every night if you have a family, you'll learn other heavy plant like diggers and loaders- if you've liked trucks from a kid? you probably like most things big and diesel, plus being multi skilled makes you more employable, good variety of work so every day is different, sites change all the time, of course various work calls for more skills and licences, but skills are always good, and the company will probably pay for your heavy W,R, & T. Money for jam brother- money for jam!

It's all pretty good for a million k's these day's, been driving American gear for a while now- all my troubles have been 80% sensor failures as opposed to actual failures...Isuzu deserves a mention, I hate them, they're ugly, they're under powered, but Isuzu make reliable gear, I cut my teeth on them and swear by them, some say cheap and nasty, but they're solid as- as in bang for your buck. Only came across one week point after many years of driving them- some models don't like to idle in gear at the lights, it shags the center clutch around 100,000ks But if money's no object- SAR Kenworths, or Volvo would be my choice, just my opinion though 🤷‍♂️

The four axle rigid towing a dolly and trailer set is a combination that’s way more common in New Zealand than in Australia. Saw at least half a dozen there I think, even a fuel tanker one. You often see them as tippers, but not so much as freighters. Interesting.

Yup. Those units (rigid truck + 45 foot full trailer) are very popular here in N.Z. They can be used for multiple different applications such as Flatbed, Curtain Side, Log trucks, Dump trucks, Tanker trucks. As seen here, we also use B-Trains (B Double) for all those different applications too, though they're not quite as long as the Australian version. Additionally, we also use quad axel (dual wheels or super single) 50 foot semi trailers (Australia doesn't have these if im not mistaken). These slightly longer semi trailers are used just for reefer and flat bed units.

What’s the max length of these different types of trucks? For example, the max length for a truck that can go interstate here in the US is 80 feet or approximately 24.3 meters (if I did the conversion correctly). I feel like some trailers, like the 4 axle box trailers, are much longer than a standard 40 or even 53 foot container

Max legal length in New Zealand without a pilot vehicle is 23 meter. How ever the DAF transporter at 17:26 has special length of 24.3 meters
