I was a SA paratrooper in the 80’s. Troops in combat need logistical support, specifically close air support. These paratroopers had nothing. It’s a Disgrace and they died for nothing. You will recall that in 2013, 15 SA paratroopers were killed in DRC (Bangui). Same story, no air support.

South Africa can achieve peace in the continent through politics and diplomacy alone. There is really no need for military confrontations when our army is one of the worst in the world due to successive budget cuts since moons ago. Nations like South Africa have the privilege that their storied history of struggle and oppression and how we overcame that without civil war afforded us a special status across the globe where our voice could be listened to by aggressors and victims alike be we underutilize this special status thanks to our extremely incompetent political leaders who care only for their own pockets instead of discharging their official mandate. A country who is able to stand in front of the whole world to accuse Israel of genocide in Palestine and then proceed to win that case at the ICJ is surely influencial enough to can bring the continent together without firing one bullet.
