This was an upmarket appartment building that was being built on private ground. I live nearby. The DA government's response has been excellent. As much as I would love to blame everything on the ANC, it is much more likely that building regulations were not being followed by private contractors.

Looks like an inferior steel structure was used - thus inexperienced contractor was used; is just my view..... so so sad for those who have lost their lives and the ones with horrific injuries....... May God help all the victims and their families....

common issue nowadays i did a core through a concrete wall in durban the building isnt yet finished. SAND. is the better term for those walls. Too many fly by nights and unskilled labour in SA

MY question... why isnt the rubble being removed.. I'm not talking about the concrete slabs but the metal and smaller bits just lying around. Instead of just standing around doing nothing.... Seems a dismal scene of abject inactivity

Most likely a combination of things including ECSA deregulating engineer fees combined with a highly competitive tendering process due to poor economic growth in country, resulting in reckless fee discounting and under pricing to win contracts. As a result of this, engineers and contractors need to cut corners either intentionally or unintentionally to finish projects.
