What about the other children accommodated in the school from outside that community and need to be placed in the school of that community, must They be denied access to that school protected by that community, this is about access, you can't deny a child access on the basis of language, mother tongue instructions is crucial for cognitive development of all children, teachers, white, yellow, black, foreigners can't choose to do what is comfortable for them, this is about the children.

The biggest crisis coming is paying for more teachers to run dual medium. At the school I'm in, over 35 teachers are paid by the GB to keep classes below 30. Once GBs are overpowered, classes will rise to 60. There aren't enough classrooms and most classrooms were built in the 1960's to accommodate 30 desks max.
@Honeybager13379 сағат бұрын
Those GBs keep the fees coming in. Those schools 'close by 'charge 3000 to 4000 per month. Those fees pay for salaries of selected, highly educated teachers, to keep control and class sizes down to 30 max. If language policies change, so will the level of education and discipline. This is the elephant in the room no wants to admit to. The govt needs to build more schools.

Your opinion is well accepted. However, those who want to be taught in their mother tongue must also not be denied that opportunity. Of course, English is always an advantage. Politicians must not compel school children to be taught in their mother tongue while their children are not attending public schools.
@sambeza705511 сағат бұрын
That should be a choice. Its called "freedom". You don't have to agree with me, I wont prevent you from choosing English if you believe it is best for your children. I happen to believe (based on scientific evidence and pride in my people) that mother tongue education first gives you a massive advantage. We can argue the point, and I might even be wrong(unlikely, but whatever), but still it should be a choice.
@Oh_Flip_SA10 сағат бұрын
@@sambeza7055 you completely right and your point is exactly the reason why English should be the medium of instruction as I mentioned as mentioned in my initial comment. As it stands now in SA Afrikaans and English speaking people are at an advantage by being able to receive education in their mother tongue, this is what is referred to as ’ colonised education’ … non English or Afrikaans speaking learners suffer from language barrier at school. Imagine offering education in all 11 official languages, a total mess. Interpretation will still be an issue. A lot will be lost in translation, after all English is the official business language.

It would take ages to develop all the official languages to the standard of Afrikaans and English in our schools, and while working on such developments (which I am sure the so called pro Afrikaans people were not always fighting for the development of other languages so long as they had their Afrikaans privileges in tact) the BELA bill could help to prevent Township schools from teaching kids everything in their mother tongue for the first few years of schooling where they also hardly learn English; only for everything to be in only English and Afrikaans from grade 4 onwards. Schools that are mother tongue median teach in mother tongue in the lower grades because they have a choice; that choice is not one they should have so long as grade 4 onwards the mother tongue is not usable. And so long as the other languages are not developed, Afrikaners should not just continue to have an advantage over the rest of us. The English can count themselves lucky. Don't even get me started on how coloured Afrikaners fit into the picture. But basically, if Afrikaners feel that their Afrikaans is fleeing them, perhaps they can be useful in helping to speed up the development of the other languages, it seems the Bela bill is doing that so far, given what this man is saying. May it continue; given the current state of SA education, the Bela Bill is a necessary evil (possibly taking us further away from mother tongues but laying the foundation for better, fair and equal learning in whatever developed language(s).

I don’t accept your argument. The methodology of “breaking down” one groups language / culture or the capacity to maintain it, will not only guarantee alienation of Afrikaans speaking people, but it will put you back decades and probably trigger a spiral of language loss. In addition, it will violate the constitution, the trust and the promises made that keeps us together and our country, barely flouting. It will also have little to no effect on access to quality education for the vast majority of people. The attitude should be. How do we partner with Afrikaans people, what can we learn from them. I mean, seriously, there is no other group, university, NGO, activist as passionate about their language,… surely they have learned a few tricks in the odd 130 years they have been fighting this fight? Is there anybody in this country (even in the world) that can claim they have successfully promoted and grown any other language, other than English to business and academic levels the past 100 years? Afrikaans is the key to success,…. All you have to do is look past the divisive rhetoric politicians use to hide their failures or instigate support for themselves.

If there are nine less schools in gauteng then it means all kids should be accommodated in the available schools until such time that the schools are built. Kids and parents are not responsible for the the failures of government to built schools. Also, we cant have single medium schools in SA. We need schools to take all children esp in Gauteng. English medium only schools in gauteng are full to a brim and as parents in the province are frustrated bcos our kids leave a school close by because its Afrikaans and travel very far....thats not okay. We are not yet a nation in the unitary sense of the concept nation. We haven't defined as yet what characterisation a nation as we aspire should asume. We are cought between the not-so-clear desires of the freedom charter and what should be understood as a united nation. The charter guarantees sectional interests of national groups and extents rights to nationhood to such groupings. We are stuck in the seperate development of 1951 (Afrikaners) and 1955 (the Congress of the People). The debantufication of development should be a priority if we were to build a new nation with clear national interests and national agenda or else we are left with but one option that is to reinvent the wheel and go the apartheid-charter route and end up balkanising the South Africa into either independent provinces or bantustands/homelands. It cant just be promotion of languages for the sake of it. This must talk to nation building, the history of that nation and its ultimate unity, the economics in which production and distribution and trade relations are well defined. Nothing as difficult would be as to preserve already destoyed languages if the 1820s Mfecane wars were to go by. These languages like culture and traditions have evolved. Preserving these languages for self-glory may be fine but truth is languages can not be seperated from the political economy of a nation ie if we still want to be a nation which we are not at current. It is upon us if we think we can build an english, xhosa, venda, sotho, pedi, tsonga lobedu, tlokwa, tswana, zulu political economy. This matter is so serious more than we may think.
