its neat, but its for a very small userbase. for most people it makes more sense to get a low-cost laptop, as they operate less buggy (dex is polished but def not perfect) and can run x86 apps. they also advertise using a rpi to turn it into a low cost laptop, but if you add up a nexdock, an rpi and a case for it, youre already at about 300$. at that point you can already get a decent laptop

This reminds me of older Laptop docks for smartphones. For those the unit would slide inside the keyboard, dock physically to the slide out tray, or clip to the back of the monitor via purpose built add-ons. Pretty much the perfect sort of device for us nerds with a rack of servers at home. Rackmount KVM drawers run ~$1000+ (depending on the monitor size/type). Although those usually have 17-19" monitors, 13" is totally viable for most server uses. Don't really need the battery in it (as for a rack console you're stationary), so theoretically it could be a bit cheaper - but in comparison to the other options it's definitely reasonable.

I've been eyeing portable monitors and usb-c multiport adapters for a while now and this does everything those do with a battery, all in one small slim package. Understandably this is a niche product and won't be for everyone. Definitely pre-ordering the touch version.

I am so torn on this. On the one hand, having "the one computing device" is very interesting and certainly the future we should go for. On the other hand this is so close to an actual laptop that I would be carrying 2 devices anyway only now with the significant downgrade that DEX is. I think something like that will be the future, but this is not yet it. Syncing to some MS surface just gives you so much more functionality that it just doesn't make sense to do this right now IMO. But it's certainly going into the right direction.

Having priced hdmi lcd screen (a whole seven inch display too!) battery pack, and all? the price is definitely worth it. I mean the tinkerer in me feels like i'm cheating myself for not rolling my own. However? This is an utterly fantastic niche that needs to be filled because, as you said, for a lot of people their phone does all the computing they realistically need, and having a thing they can bundle into for those moments where they need just that little bit bigger display or keyboard? That honestly will suit people if it's easy to use. Plus for nerds like us? Oh hey the laptop is running slow? Get this year's single board computer and stick that in. Boom there you go, and bonus, enough room inside for more storage. My one gripe is 'having the actual guts bundled to the outside is inelegant, but it does allow them to not have to engineer comaprtments.'

That's what I was planning to do with my new S20 Ultra before everything shut down. But I don't like lugging my heavy $2000 gaming laptop just to edit videos on or do presentations. Someone even DAMAGED it during a plane flight! The passenger beside me had stretched their foot over into my foot area and kicked my bag which had my laptop in it. Cracking the corner of the frame! Obviously, I didn't know they'd damaged it until I got off the plane and got home. Otherwise I would have let them have it! Now I have to carefully support that corner of the screen when I open it otherwise risk the guts surrounding the screen pushing through the case. But stories aside, this is exactly why I don't want to carry a $2000 phone AND a $2000 laptop with me, not to mention gimbal, charger, etc, when I go to conventions.

1080p is still pretty good even on a larger screen. I have a Samsung XL2370HD which is more like 22.5 inches but the picture is pretty good for 1080p on that. Of course I have seen 52 inch and larger displays that still look good with 1080p. I know 4K is better but we bought these displays back when you would have had to get a mortgage to buy a 4K TV. 1080p on my Sony Xperia X also looks really good since it is just a 5 inch display. The picture quality is really pretty good even today. Sony also made some devices with 5 inch 4K displays and that was back at least as far back as before 2015. Sony has always had the best specs for their smartphones before most others had one as good. I like that for the longest time they used IPS displays and not AMOLED or super AMOLED because those burn in and if you have a Samsung phone you may have seen that before. The way I see it, a display should be made to last and not get burned in the way AMOLED and super AMOLED get burned in. Sure you get nice black and white but the white is not that white and it is eventually going to get burn-in somewhere. I have not seen it with IPS at all even when they have been left on for hours with the same picture and that would ruin AMOLED and super AMOLED displays.

I definitely could use this with several applications. but can't imagine spending more than $150 on a solution like this. Now I'm wondering if i could turn an old laptop into this kind of thing

For a great battery, USB C display, usb/hdmi hub, touchscreen (on the new model), kB+m, etc.. this is actually a very competitive price

Also, you cannot. Virtually every laptop is equipped with an HDMI out port, which will not under any circumstances work as an input

This reminds me of the failed Kickstarter for Superbook. Luckily I got my refund out for that, last I checked there are still who never got their money back or the product promised. Glad to see a similar product, but real.

Wish you showed the NUC/Windows rather than just talking about it, do you guys know any windows service that can be sufficiently powered via USB C?

The best thing about this product is not the Dock at all. It is those cables that can let you cast and connect all kinds of things together.

Sooooo when do we get this with display port and a 144hz display? Or at least 120hz over HDMI 2.0 with freesync? I want to see an itx PC companion

Usually with apple you can plug everything in while the apple device is off then turn it on. I had that problem with GarageBand and midi devices.

LEFT handed design? think about it, if you were to put down your cell phone what side would you put it on? Those short cables don't make it flexible, plus what if you to use the mouse function of the S cellphone?

Being right handed, I'd put my phone or Pi on the left side so as to leave room for a mouse or Wacom tablet on the right.

ETA have you tried the ADMIN HANDS app on the google play store? i love the app for ssh and sftp with the rpi4. i was just wondering what you thought about it as i haven't seen many people talking about it, i was wondering if there is something wrong with it that i'm not seeing or if people really just haven't found it yet.

If Dex supports a terminal and a decent text editor then I may through out my macbook

It's pretty good for a Samsung Dex thing but using it with a NUC? For the price of the dock and a NUC you can get a pretty good laptop.
