Nexar Dashcam Review | Test Video Footage

Two weekends ago I was sitting in the mall parking lot waiting for a person to take a parking spot, when they decided to put their car in reverse, and of course backed right into me. Then tried to flee the scene.
I immediately began to chase them and finally they pulled over after about 6 minutes across the street at a strip mall. If only I had a dash cam... that's where Nexar comes in. This is not a sponsored video. I ordered it from Amazon.

I got it after watching a BMW channel on KZbin. Shout to Nour. It says it takes 5 min. to install and starts recording as you drive. Detects collisions in 360 degrees. Hopefully I will not be testing that one.
The videos are sent to you phone and also backed up to the cloud.The packaging is pretty nice, and not too flashy. I like simple.Inside you're greeted with a note that says to download the Nexar app, which I did the day I ordered it on Amazon.
It also says everything else you need to know is inside. I'll go ahead and say that it's a 3 step process since it appears to be that way.We also have some cable clips. The camera mount which uses sticky tape. I'll have to see how this holds up over time.
There's a dual USB adapter so you'll have a free port....A super long cable, that's not type-C. An extra sticky tape. ummmmm hmmmm. We'll definitely be testing this. A trim pry tool, which will help you with cable management. Not everyone has one of these so I'm glad to see that it comes in the box.
And lastly...we have the dash cam. It records in full HD. I'll drop a test video in later so you can have a look at the quality.The camera is pretty light and feels a little hollow in the hand. In terms of build, I'd say it looks better than it actually feels. Meaning the build quality could be a little better. But for $60 bucks, I'm really not complaining.
As you can see here, this camera uses wi-fi to pair with your phone, so it will take a larger hit on the batter than bluetooth. But I think it's necessary since due to the map data that it passes along. Along the top you'll notice a REAR port. I didn't purchase a camer for my back window yet as I need to see how good this one works. In the middle is where you connect the mount, next to a reset button and the power port.
On the bottom, you have a Micro SD card slot, and yes the camera comes with a 32GB card. I replaced mine with a 64GB to record more. and then the power button.There's also indicator lights for the camera and Wi-fi, so again, you get a lot for this price.
Ok, I already told you that I downloaded the app the other day. It's called NEXAR and you can't it in both app stores.On Android, you'll need to first grant it the permission for pictures and video, access storage on your phone, and lastly location for the map info.
You'll need to sign up for an account by providing your name, email and phone. After a quick verification, you're all set and logged in.
We're not done though...cuz all that was step number 1. For step 2 we need to be inside the car.
First, take your USB adapter and go ahead and plug it in along with the cable. Next, take the camera mount and install it on the top of the camera like I show you here. It clicks and locks right into place.
You'll need to open the app, Tap on More at the bottom and then Settings. Next tap on External Camera. Make sure that you have wi-fi enabled on your phone, and if you are connected to your home network, you have to disconnect first. So far this was a one time thing for me, but something I will be keeping my eye on.
Now you should be able to click Next. The app will connect to the dash cam, authenticate your phone and you'll see a success message. As you can see the camera image display right on your phone screen and now you're ready to mount the phone to your windshield.
Oh, and by the way this still step number 1.Step two is to hide your cable. I didn't show you this because everyone's car is different. For me it was simple and I didn't even need to use the trim removal tool. Step 3 is you becoming familiar with the dash cam. I figured the best way to do that was to take a drive.
Thinking back to the day my car was hit (and there was no damage by the way) now that I'm watching back this footage, I wish I had this camera to use a way to document what happened.
The footage looks awesome even after I created this clip, and uploaded and downloaded it to google photos. I didn't have to modify it at all. One thing to note is that you'll want to keep your phone plugged in especially if you're using your GPS. Being that the app uses wi-fi does have an impact on your battery.
Anyway, that's it for today. I gotta say, so far I'm pretty pleased. Over the next couple of weeks you'll see more videos of me in the car, so I'll have a follow up to this review along with some night time footage.

Yeah, but you have to keep your Wi-Fi on your phone open all the time. I mean you can't record anything unless your phone is connected to the device. Sure, the device uploads data to the cloud for free, but you have to be connected. What happens when you loose connection, which has been known to happen. There's no indicator for that occurance. Plus, those annoying notices. There's absolutely no way to bypass that feature. I'll stick with my Scoche dash camera and view the data on my laptop. Nice video though. I agree with you about too many cables in the car.

I must say that this camera comes with everything needed to capture excellent video while driving ...However....I have found my Garmin w/built in dash cam to be much superior. It actually serves multiple purposes.....A GPS accurate speedometer, an exceptional navigational tool w/ free lifetime updates, an incident recorder for accidents with speed, location and time all time stamped onto video, a still camera for taking photos of those weird things you see while driving and a great vlogging camera with sound to use while driving. You can share the video easily to social media sites as well as upload and edit with or without sound. I would recommend the Garmin over the Nexar because of it's multi-use functionality and the varying screen sizes offered.

I just put this in my vehicle before walking into work, so far its recorded a couple "driving events".... I've been at work away from the car the whole time.... it needs to sense battery power and shut down/sleep..... at least that's my opinion, I haven't used it on road yet, as I said, I'm at work.

My nexar dash cam sucks. The audio on it keeps randomly cutting out for absolutely no reason. If I take a 40 second clip the audio will usually be on for about 10 seconds then off for 10 seconds then on for 10 seconds again. Then I tried to look at footage from yesterday and it just showed a frozen frame and then another frame 10 seconds later and then it stuck on that frame for the rest of the 40 minute long "full drive".

Works really good for the most part. After a few days it didn't power on again I tried contacting customer service what a joke absolutely horrible customer service. They took days to respond by email no phone to actually talk to someone. I returned it and waiting for refund. My advice is to buy through AMAZON only not directly from Nexar for better customer service

it does not require syncing to your phone in order to start recording, it'll save everything on the SD card but you will not have features like GPS and location as those are pulled from the phones data.

Let me look into that. I had thought about driving for Uber before. This camera is also used by Uber drivers. They point the camera in the opposite direction so the view is inside the car. I will try to get more cameras though.

I'm a little confused though. Everyone who reviews this says the video quality is great even after "downloading it from my phone," "uploading it to google photos," etc. It seems like the blame is always on some other service, and I still have not seen any quality footage from this camera. Does Nexar pay people and have guidelines to follow such as "make up an excuse for why the video is so bad"? Do you not agree that the video quality is terrible?

I don't agree that the quality is bad. I have lots of footage and it looks good to me. I know that Google compresses video when you upload it so I was expecting it to be worse. It's clear and I can read words and license plates from it. It's much better than the shaky footage I got from my Galaxy Note 10 plus. Also, I didn't get paid by anyone. This is my personal opinion after using the camera. I have never been in contact with Nexar.

As long as you can make out details such as license plate numbers the quality is fine. If you want better quality buy an expensive camera and get a car mount. I'm gonna be purchasing this camera just for added insurance against idiots, not filming.

Nice!! I gotta get me one, you just never know and ppl are crazy. I remember a while back this lady hit my boys car because she was turned wide and turned into our Lane. She would not admit to fault at all and kept saying it was his fault because he was in the middle of the street, mind you we had the green and she ran the light. I bought this dash cam. And before you even gave the review/before I watch the video and posting my experience. This camera is not worth the money. The camera gets extremely hot during use and is paired with your iPhone, the iPhone gets very hot while nexar is in use as well. The materials are cheap plastic. The wires are stiff and hard. The video they show that advertises this camera is not what you will get nor will you experience. It constantly pairs and unpairs with your phone even if you have a late model vehicle with Wi-Fi hotspot and Bluetooth engaged. This is not a good camera. PS good concise video with instructions.
