Honestly, I’m getting really interested in this as a dock for the upcoming Steam Deck. The Steam Deck is not only a strong gaming PC, but it can also be used for… anything a PC can be used for. And we already know it’ll work with any dock that has a type-c connection. So instead of buying a standard dock, a monitor, keyboard, and mouse, I could just buy this and it would be even more convenient. This is honestly looking really nice.

@@farishanafiah8461 Nexdock couldn't source enough 14.1 screens. They planned two more batches of the touch. The 360 screen although slightly smaller is a big improvement over the 14 model, which was the biggest complaint. It was too washed out with no way to adjust. Until covid ends, don't expect a bigger screen anytime soon. I'm glad my order was converted to a 360, after seeing how vastly better the screen is.

I have been using dex with a dock, monitor, mouse and keyboard, sdr, and battery bank. The dock plugs directly in the fone and can keep it charged with the battery bank if I want to include it(not required). This looks like a possible option to replace my monitor and keyboard if I wanted to travel light. Although I'm likely to keep my mouse as I detest track pads. My only issue is that this isn't very useful if they can't deliver it on purchase.

The NexDock 360 is worth the price especially if you already own a Samsung Galaxy S20/21/22 Ultra Smartphone and want to take advantage of Samsung DeX. The ability to pass-through external devices to the smartphone, whether an external storage device or an Ethernet adaptor outs it ahead of similar products on the market. I am using mine as a notebook computer replacement for web development, decentralised application development, and smart contract development, testing, and auditing. When I ordered a NexDock 360 earlier this year it took maybe 2 weeks to arrive. It feels more premium than my premium business-class ultra-notebook. It would be nice if Samsung partnered with NexDock to enable them to maintain a consistent inventory so some people are not waiting months for delivery. I agree a Bluetooth mouse is essential; trackpads feel awkward and not as precise but that is not the fault of NexDock.

While I've always been intrigued by the concept, the reality of pricing still makes this hard to do myself or recommend to others. The NexDock is $340 (with the relatively exorbitant shipping cost included). A nice chromebook like the Acer Chromebook Spin 513 is only $10 more at $349. For that $10 dollars, you additionally get a CPU, RAM, storage, and the other niceties that come along with a standalone laptop. Of course, you may lose out on performance for certain tasks, but the redundancy and no need for a physical tether make the chromebook a winner in my mind. Maybe what we should be pushing is for laptop manufacturers to start including video-in via USB-C. Then we can just buy a lower-spec laptop to use for basic tasks and then plug in our phones when we have some heavy lifting work that needs to be done.
@farishanafiah8461
@farishanafiah8461 3 жыл бұрын
The whole point of this lapdock is longevity. Since it doesn't have any CPU or GPU in it, you can use this thing for multiple devices for long. Sure that you can buy a standalone Chromebook at that price, but the overall performance will be lost in few years time.
@blakejackson3174
@blakejackson3174 3 жыл бұрын
@@farishanafiah8461 Longevity may be the goal, but it is definitely not a guarantee since only a minority of phone manufacturers/models support screen output. To make long term use of the lapdock, one would have to limit themselves to those phones having a desktop mode (very few!) when it came time to upgrade. Not sure that restriction is something I would want for myself or family/friends to whom I may offer advice.

Chromebook support length is awful. They literally write it on the wall. At least if you could install Linux (in a non-hacky way) then you could keep using it, but that doesn't undermine the awfully poor performance of the SoCs they use in them. Plus to run the display some laptops like that may require the GPU / computer to be on. Plus, it's more wasteful to make that which is worse and limited. Lets face it, basically no laptops have USB-DisplayPort input, and at that price point, they never will. You have to basically put the video input, at least some switching circuit, on the motherboard too. USB-DisplayPort is not a software feature, but connects the hardware directly to the GPU (that is why it's so cheap compared to a DisplayLink renderer)

I kept it really simple and easy. I use a 13" Wimaxit monitor. I adheared a 20,000mah battery to the back of the monitor case, so I don't have to carry it separately. I have two 6" cables. One to put into the battery and one to put into my phone. I keep them both plugged into my monitor all the time. I use my GN20U as a keyboard and trackpad. I paid the same amount that I would have if I was getting the Nexdock, but I got it the SAME week I ordered it. So I am using it right now, instead of waiting for it. Also, if something goes wrong with one component, I just replace IT instead of replacing the whole thing. It's nice to have choices. 🙂

I can understand your point there. But from my personal experience, using the phone as the keyboard and trackpad never go well. Also, carrying that whole setup around can be a bit of a struggle. That is probably why this lapdock idea is still usable.

I've had a Galaxy s20 fe for about a month now. And I've always been interested in Dex. Now, I just came across those lapdocks and man are they compelling. I am so glad that you brought the Chromebook counter argument that the specs of a 3 year old Chromebook will become obsolete whereas the dock will last for many generations, or at least different phones. One thing I'd like to point out is the increased sense of security those docks could bring. Imagine a group of students working in a room, and one of them calls out to go get some food. The group leaves the room and their laptops there with a chance of being stolen. Well, the person using a lapdock can just bring its phone and not lose as much as the others. Who's laughing now!

Some refurbished laptops with 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD runs on much older 5th/6th gen Intel Core CPU. Even when looking at Chromebooks, things aren't much different. The only most sensible $349 laptop I can find on Best Buy is the Samsung Galaxy Book Go with Qualcomm Snapdragon 7c Gen 2 SoC and Windows 11 ARM, but even that only has 4GB RAM and 128GB eMMC storage. Edit: One more cool thing that not many people consider with these devices is that truly unthrottled mobile data plans are now a thing, whereas hotspot and tablet plans still get throttled. If you're very mobile and need reliable internet, that's pretty sweet. Definitely better than paying extra for a tablet plan and getting throttled, or using the phone's hotspot data for a normal laptop and still getting throttled. Couple it with a stronger PC at home that you can remote into with Parsec or Moonlight, and you have the perfect "Do it all" machine.

I was hoping you would review the NexDock and possibly compare it to the Uperfect - thanks. One of the apps I’m using a lot works WAY better on my android phone than the iOS version does on my iPad, but the app is also harder to see on the relatively small screen of my phone. I thought about buying an android tablet, but I would rather buy something to use with my android phone, and these two docks are the leading contenders. I appreciate you showing the on screen controls, I don’t think either company mentions it at all on their websites. Are the on screen controls the same between the two? Or is one better than the other? I wanted to point out that the Uperfect has a 10,000 mAh battery and dual speakers, while the NexDock has the extra port and 4 (1W) speakers, but only a 5,800 mAh battery. This info came from their respective websites, which may or may not be up to date. Picking my poison, the NexDock seems the better choice for me, being cheaper and with the extra port. And I carry a power bank around with me, so the difference in battery size wouldn’t affect me much. Again, thanks for the informative videos. I find them very helpful and informative. And entertaining. 😄

Some people might think that kind of gadget is rather pointless but looking at the starting price of the Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra with no 5G support, 8GB RAM, and 128GB internal storage for $1,100, you start to appreciate just how useful this kind of gadget is. Last year's S21 can now be bought as a used or secondhand item for as low as $500, and I still have around $200 to spare for accessories or peripherals like USB-C hubs. EDIT As for 6:43 to 7:01, I totally doubt something like the NexDock can displace laptop sales, at least for Windows. You even mentioned about palm rejection issue on Android, which is something Windows has no problem at all. I always see the NexDock and Android Desktop Mode as a disruptor for Chromebook laptop, not for Windows laptop. So I can understand why Samsung develop DeX for PC software as Windows is still the preferred desktop OS for daily productivity work.

I did use Samsung's DeX for PC software on my Windows machine and I definitely love the flexibility of using both Android and Windows at the same time without any lag. There is however one problem though: You can't get any DRM-protected apps working on it. I tried to open Netflix on DeX for PC, but it didn't show up.

Desktop mode won't make much sense unless it will become available in entry level smartphones. High end phones offering it are simply too expensive for the solution to become popular. Most entry level smartphones have CPUs more powerful than a Raspberry Pi anyway, not to mention something like Poco X3 Pro with 8XX Snapdragon for around 200$. All we really need is for Chrome OS to become part of Android (nobody needs dozens of different desktop modes from different manufacturers) and USB-C display out will make its way to more devices.

We have to wait until Qualcomm and Mediatek give external display support for entry-level chipset. At least in Qualcomm's context, they do give external display support for midrange chipsets. That could explain why the Sony Xperia 10 Mk3 has a USB-C 3.1 port with video output capability.

Juan really gets it.. I'm just thinking about Windows 3.1 and the way it used to be. Sooner or later (in fact right now) these devices are going to become so powerful that in terms of compute performance, they will be able to accomplish most tasks for most people. And when that happens the only bottleneck will be application support.. Software. In many ways its really the evolution of personal computing. Where a single device is not only small enough to be found literally on your person so to speak, but is also powerful enough and flexible enough to be used in multiple contexts.. Given the right kind of software, it could fundementally shift the way we think about and use computers. Its potentially VERY disruptive..

P.S I can definitely see a major selling point of this product for schools that plays around with Raspberry Pi.

I doubt yo will even see this but I was wondering if you could give some insight based off your experience. I currently have the Nexdock touch I bought years ago based off your review. (actually using it with Ready For right now on my Motorola G100 in my hotel room to type this!) I was curious if the Nexdock 360 is a decent upgrade over the older touch? You mentioned lighter weight so that is a plus for me on these motorcycle trips. Is the screen any brighter on the 360? Is there really any other reason to upgrade besides the new 360 hinge? I figure I can sell my current touch for a decent price to make up some of the cost since its in great shape still. Thanks for making these reviews. I love being able to use my phone as a laptop when I travel and I wouldnt have known about this if it werent for your channel.

I do like the 360 better than the touch. I don't have the touch anymore to compare, so I honestly cant say how the brightness compares. The form factor is just more versatile. You do need to carry extra dongles or adapters though, since the 360 doesn't have room for USBA or full sized HDMI. If you're looking for sleeker though, it's worth the trade off IMO.

@@SomeGadgetGuy Thanks for the quick reply! I didn't think about the dongles. I do normally use a wireless mouse that uses USB-A but that's not a huge deal. @rblythin
@rblythin 3 жыл бұрын
You can't directly compare them as they run at different voltages. Real world use they last about the same amount of time, but the nexdock charges 3-4x faster than the uperfect. Uperfect X: 10,000 mAH battery at 3.6v. Nexdock 360: 44 WH, 5,800 mAh at 7.6 V (equivalent to 12,222 mAH at 3.6v) Uperfect charges at 150-250 mA . Nexdock 360 at 850ma. The battery on the nexdock is much stronger, whereas the uperfect depending on the device plugged in, charges much slower and in some cases with tablets even loses charge over time with the tablet screen active. Also the nexdock boots 4 seconds faster than the uperfect. To score them: uperfect 8/10, nexdock 360 9/10. If one can cope with the slightly longer wait time. The nexdock 360 is the overall better unit and value.
