The NexDock 360 is worth the price especially if you already own a Samsung Galaxy S20/21/22 Ultra Smartphone and want to take advantage of Samsung DeX. The ability to pass-through external devices to the smartphone, whether an external storage device or an Ethernet adaptor outs it ahead of similar products on the market. I am using mine as a notebook computer replacement for web development, decentralised application development, and smart contract development, testing, and auditing. When I ordered a NexDock 360 earlier this year it took maybe 2 weeks to arrive. It feels more premium than my premium business-class ultra-notebook. It would be nice if Samsung partnered with NexDock to enable them to maintain a consistent inventory so some people are not waiting months for delivery. I agree a Bluetooth mouse is essential; trackpads feel awkward and not as precise but that is not the fault of NexDock.

While I've always been intrigued by the concept, the reality of pricing still makes this hard to do myself or recommend to others. The NexDock is $340 (with the relatively exorbitant shipping cost included). A nice chromebook like the Acer Chromebook Spin 513 is only $10 more at $349. For that $10 dollars, you additionally get a CPU, RAM, storage, and the other niceties that come along with a standalone laptop. Of course, you may lose out on performance for certain tasks, but the redundancy and no need for a physical tether make the chromebook a winner in my mind. Maybe what we should be pushing is for laptop manufacturers to start including video-in via USB-C. Then we can just buy a lower-spec laptop to use for basic tasks and then plug in our phones when we have some heavy lifting work that needs to be done.
@farishanafiah84613 жыл бұрын
The whole point of this lapdock is longevity. Since it doesn't have any CPU or GPU in it, you can use this thing for multiple devices for long. Sure that you can buy a standalone Chromebook at that price, but the overall performance will be lost in few years time.
@blakejackson31743 жыл бұрын
@@farishanafiah8461 Longevity may be the goal, but it is definitely not a guarantee since only a minority of phone manufacturers/models support screen output. To make long term use of the lapdock, one would have to limit themselves to those phones having a desktop mode (very few!) when it came time to upgrade. Not sure that restriction is something I would want for myself or family/friends to whom I may offer advice.

Chromebook support length is awful. They literally write it on the wall. At least if you could install Linux (in a non-hacky way) then you could keep using it, but that doesn't undermine the awfully poor performance of the SoCs they use in them. Plus to run the display some laptops like that may require the GPU / computer to be on. Plus, it's more wasteful to make that which is worse and limited. Lets face it, basically no laptops have USB-DisplayPort input, and at that price point, they never will. You have to basically put the video input, at least some switching circuit, on the motherboard too. USB-DisplayPort is not a software feature, but connects the hardware directly to the GPU (that is why it's so cheap compared to a DisplayLink renderer)

I kept it really simple and easy. I use a 13" Wimaxit monitor. I adheared a 20,000mah battery to the back of the monitor case, so I don't have to carry it separately. I have two 6" cables. One to put into the battery and one to put into my phone. I keep them both plugged into my monitor all the time. I use my GN20U as a keyboard and trackpad. I paid the same amount that I would have if I was getting the Nexdock, but I got it the SAME week I ordered it. So I am using it right now, instead of waiting for it. Also, if something goes wrong with one component, I just replace IT instead of replacing the whole thing. It's nice to have choices. 🙂

One of the apps I’m using a lot works WAY better on my android phone than the iOS version does on my iPad, but the app is also harder to see on the relatively small screen of my phone. I thought about buying an android tablet, but I would rather buy something to use with my android phone, and these two docks are the leading contenders. I appreciate you showing the on screen controls, I don’t think either company mentions it at all on their websites. Are the on screen controls the same between the two? Or is one better than the other? I wanted to point out that the Uperfect has a 10,000 mAh battery and dual speakers, while the NexDock has the extra port and 4 (1W) speakers, but only a 5,800 mAh battery. This info came from their respective websites, which may or may not be up to date. Picking my poison, the NexDock seems the better choice for me, being cheaper and with the extra port. Desktop mode won't make much sense unless it will become available in entry level smartphones. High end phones offering it are simply too expensive for the solution to become popular. Most entry level smartphones have CPUs more powerful than a Raspberry Pi anyway, not to mention something like Poco X3 Pro with 8XX Snapdragon for around 200$. Where a single device is not only small enough to be found literally on your person so to speak, but is also powerful enough and flexible enough to be used in multiple contexts.. Oh my God... If only these miracle "laptops" are available where I live, it'll literally change the way students here do online classes. I live in a 3rd world country and with the pandemic, everyone's shifting to online classes. But the most obvious problem is access to the Internet and devices used for such learning. Your phone having the capability to turn into a literal laptop will resolve such problems. Everyone have phones but not everyone has a capable laptop This device needs to go mainstream!

I wish we could push this more aggressively. ESPECIALLY outside the USA where for so many young people, a phone might be the ONLY computer they have access to.

"Your phone having the capability to turn into a literal laptop..." That, ironically, is where nearly all smartphone makers fails to do. We only see this on selected flagship-grade smartphones from selected brands. Up to this point, the only non-flagship smartphone I see that have such a capability is the LG Velvet 5G and the LG Wing 5G. I don't even see any SD6xx midrange smartphones that can do this at all. P.S I can definitely see a major selling point of this product for schools that plays around with Raspberry Pi.

Total newb here so I apologize for the question, but would I be able to attach my S21 Ultra to the Nexdock, turning it into a serviceable notebook for me, but also simultaneously share my screen with a large classroom monitor? I've used the original DeX dock and a BT keyboard in the past (my Surface Pro crapped out on me and was being repaired) and successfully connected DeX to these overhead monitors where I teach, but it was frustrating; whenever I needed to look at the screen, I would have to turn my back on my class. Thanks!
@SomeGadgetGuy2 жыл бұрын
It wouldn't be as convenient, but I suppose you could run an HDMi out from the phone into an HDMI splitter? That could work. You'd also need to run an additional USB cable for the nexdock's touchpad and keyboard.

That is the problem. For home PCs, there is still a good use of the NexDock. But for phones, very few has video output support in the first place despite some having a powerful USB-C 3.1 port like the Pixel.
@dracer352 жыл бұрын
I doubt yo will even see this but I was wondering if you could give some insight based off your experience. I currently have the Nexdock touch I bought years ago based off your review. (actually using it with Ready For right now on my Motorola G100 in my hotel room to type this!) I was curious if the Nexdock 360 is a decent upgrade over the older touch? You mentioned lighter weight so that is a plus for me on these motorcycle trips. Is the screen any brighter on the 360? Is there really any other reason to upgrade besides the new 360 hinge? I figure I can sell my current touch for a decent price to make up some of the cost since its in great shape still. Thanks for making these reviews. I love being able to use my phone as a laptop when I travel and I wouldnt have known about this if it werent for your channel.
@SomeGadgetGuy2 жыл бұрын
I do like the 360 better than the touch. I don't have the touch anymore to compare, so I honestly cant say how the brightness compares. The form factor is just more versatile. You do need to carry extra dongles or adapters though, since the 360 doesn't have room for USBA or full sized HDMI. If you're looking for sleeker though, it's worth the trade off IMO.
@dracer352 жыл бұрын
@@SomeGadgetGuy Thanks for the quick reply! I didn't think about the dongles. I do normally use a wireless mouse that uses USB-A but that's not a huge deal. The HDMI port only gets used at home when I'm using it as a portable monitor when building PC's so no worries there either. I think I'll give it a try. Thanks again!

Dude great review. I was looking at these because of Steam deck. Plugging deck to this is going to be awesome. If you don’t have a space for full on monitor/keyboard setup. THat's what I keep trying to point out. Techies act like people should just buy a cheap chromebook, but your phone is probably as powerful as a cheap chromebook AND you can use this thing with ANYTHING else that can use a monitor.

How about the battery life? Iirc, the UPERFECT X has bigger battery than this NexDock.
@rblythin3 жыл бұрын
You can't directly compare them as they run at different voltages. Real world use they last about the same amount of time, but the nexdock charges 3-4x faster than the uperfect. Uperfect X: 10,000 mAH battery at 3.6v. Nexdock 360: 44 WH, 5,800 mAh at 7.6 V (equivalent to 12,222 mAH at 3.6v) Uperfect charges at 150-250 mA . Nexdock 360 at 850ma. The battery on the nexdock is much stronger, whereas the uperfect depending on the device plugged in, charges much slower and in some cases with tablets even loses charge over time with the tablet screen active. Also the nexdock boots 4 seconds faster than the uperfect. To score them: uperfect 8/10, nexdock 360 9/10. If one can cope with the slightly longer wait time. The nexdock 360 is the overall better unit and value.

Great review of the product!! Can someone tell me if either the NexDock 360 or the Uperfect X have a built-in webcam? I started to think very seriously in a lapdock concept due to the Steam Deck launch. The great price/power ratio of the Deck, together with the versatility of a lapdock, can be unbeatable, but I would appreciate a webcam for that purpose given that the Deck hasn't one. Moreover, the Steam Deck seems to have amazing speakers, which is the weakpoint of these lapdocks, so..... ;)
@SomeGadgetGuy2 жыл бұрын
Nope. The best solution I've seen for that is to clip the phone to the display, and run your webcam needs from the phone screen. Hopefully we get good drivers for cameras in Android some day.
@superPolip2 жыл бұрын
@@SomeGadgetGuy Thank you very much for the quick response! I was trying to avoid using the phone for that, at least until it isn't easier (through standard drivers as you said). I feel that the Deck won't effectively replace my laptop usage if the camera isn't always easily available, and that heavily compromises the +300€ investment. I hope the Steam Deck boosts lapdocks, and more options come to the customers at better prices :) Thanks again!
