It just happens to be that I had the absolute pleasure to operate the Davinci Robot in one of Netherlands hospitals yesterday. As I understand, there are about 25 of these robot's in the Netherlands and they are around for quite a few years. There are some surgeries that are only operated by robot these days. Very interesting stuff!

Sadly all of the robotics that actually matter are mostly American but a few are Japanese, none are European. Reason being is a brain drain. Many Europeans actually work on robotics of course, it's just the projects and pay here is ridiculous compared to California where there's deep pockets for major projects that're never-ending. Also, even if your work never makes it to the intended target, the technology is bought out and used on something bigger and greater thus your hard work almost certainly wont go to waste if you're working for a major player.

Boston Dynamics is the real deal. I think they're going to be the Google of Robotics. The big unknown though at this point is what amazing tech is Dean Kamen (Segway inventor and also a pioneer in robotic prosthetics) is working on and how close his company is to something revolutionary. Another favorite of mine is the Shadow Dexterous Hand, the amazingly agile robotic hand from Shadow Robots.

Actually they got sold because Boston Dynamics has wowed the world several times over with its incredible robots that can do things like lift loads, jump higher than a human can and get up after it’s fallen over, the company hasn’t been able to build anything it can bring to the market, or earning its owner any revenue.
@LetsTalkWithRobots

They did it actually in Nov 2017 but they got rejected because Huw Williams, editor of Jane's International Defence Review magazine, told CNBC by email Wednesday that the reception from the army has been mixed. "They can operate in a lot of terrains, but don't have the mobility to go everywhere," he said. "Their noise signature is an issue - battery technology isn't where it needs to be to meet the power requirements of larger systems, so they have been powered by traditional combustion engines, which are noisy." and the defense analyst said it's unclear if the military could find a use for it. at least for next few years. but still, Boston dynamics is consistently working on noise levels and control engineering to meet the expectations of the military. and it will happen soon because this year we have really efficient upgrades.

The Da Vinci is years old. I had the honour of facilitating a live video link at a conference in London, more than a decade ago, with a live prostatectomy via a "Da Vinci 2" in the nearby hospital. The Da Vinci 2 was the better, stereoscopic, remotely-operable robot for cutting-edge keyhole surgical procedures. I was utterly fascinated - geeking out, even - watching from the surgeon's perspective as tiny metal hands and tools delicately excised a tumour with such precision that nerves and vessels were spared, every tiny incision was perfectly closed or cauterised, and barely a half-inch scar would be left as a reminder. They had assembled a demo pod in the conference lobby, so once my part was done with the video link I went and had a play with the idle robot. As the conference visitors were all engaged n the event I had plenty of time to work my way through the various provided exercises- mostly tying tiny bows, or stitching jelly moulds together. The controls felt so intuitive, and the VR-like interface and haptic feedback provided so much depth and tact, that I took quite naturally to it. I redid several abortive efforts by the visiting surgeons and delegates, delicately removing stitches, rearranging mock tissues, and precisely reattaching them with stitches that looked inches wide in my view, but were almost just a hair's-breadth apart. It was as easy as sewing... just with weird thimbles. I even did a little origami, and not just a paper plane either, but the same little crane that I'd made from countless napkins and Post-Its ever since I was bored in class back at school. When I finally emerged from the control interface I realised that I'd gathered a small audience. They were all gazing at a large screen displaying the entire performance from my perspective beside the 'operating table' full of my tiny experiments. Suddenly embarrassed, and worried that I'd be in trouble for playing with the very expensive equipment when I should have been hiding behind my own equipment somewhere in the shadows, I tried to make a quick getaway. I was stopped by a woman holding the hand of a young girl. She gently tapped me on the arm and gushed excitedly. "That's amazing! You've obviously had practice. Are you a urological surgeon? My daughter wants to be a doctor one day. Where did you study?" I have never been a good liar. As the gathered group of suited professionals (some of whom were certainly accomplished surgeons) turned in curiosity to the exchange, I blushed uncomfortably and gave her my most professional smile. "I'm afraid that I'm just the IT guy. I couldn't resist trying it out." Upon gesturing to the amazing machine, I noticed a few quizzical glances. Guessing that they couldn't believe it was my first try, I mimmicked waggling the thumbsticks of an invisible controller and shrugged. "Playstation generation", I said, grinned broadly, and ducked out as quickly as possible. At least the little girl appreciated my effort - she laughed heartily. I wonder if she got a console for Christmas?" _____ "qua-drooped" XD - That's just gold! I will never pronounce "biped" the same way again! ;)

I mean, it makes sense if you consider the reality that they're still too expensive in comparison to using just standard humans. The sheer degree of maintenance required to simply keep them fully functional would be over the top. There's also the reality that dedicating an entire army to robotics would open them up to being hacked, or worse yet, uselessness through electromagnetic pulses, which can be made for an incredibly cheap cost.

At least a robot is more predictable than a human. Robots have specific parameters to follow and a core that does not understand self-awareness as of yet so in essence it would be safer than your average human. Human beings with self-awareness are unpredictable but robots with specified parameters are.
