I LOVE the split levels; they have some of the most unique floor plans I've seen:-)

Excellent explanation of a split level house. I own a 4 level side split. You nailed ever point!

when my parents married, they each had their own children and me on the way. they built a raised ranch with 6 bedrooms. it suited us quite well. after my older siblings moved out, my younger brother and me had all that space to play in. my friends were always over having adventures and such. and then my parents divorced and sold the house. it came up for sale a few years ago and I showed it to my wife and children. it was a little run down, but the kids loved it and I really wanted it. my wife liked it but wasn't as interested in it as I was. I did a second walk through without them and noticed a few more flaws with it that I missed the first time. the kitchen was in the process of a diy remodel, and there were cracks here and there in the walls. and some of the rooms were in bad need of paint. it also felt smaller than I remember. but all that space! and, we didn't quite have the money for the down payment. repairs could have been made. and it had an extra detached garage with potential apartment on the back of it. that was my dad's house when he met my mom. after the bigger house was built, he converted it into a workshop. maybe it'll be available again hopefully in the near future.

Very well described! Thanks for the overview. I grew up in my 1960s split level and then purchased it from my parents when they wanted to downsize. I raised my family here and now am thinking about retirement living. 52 years and counting I can say they are a great style for family living but they do fall short when considering aging in place.

It’s a trend by me because it’s the only houses we can afford to buy. And try our best to modernize.

I wonder if split level homes will make a comeback?

We bought out first home and it’s a split level/completely renovated. It’s been amazing especially having little ones. I always tell my wife if we ever buy a bigger house eventually we are going to wish we stayed in our current home especially as we get older.

I could see it coming back since people are looking for more private areas in their homes post-2020.

My wife and I love the look of the split level. We are hoping to break ground by the end of the year. But contractors are hard to find that want to tackle this

It does take extra time and money to build a split level. Some contractors just want to do a quick box house and be off to the next one. Keep looking until you find a quality builder that will build what you want. Thx for watching!

split level homes in my area in NY sell very quickly and are expensive. I am on the hunt for a house and would love to find a split level but they sell very fast here.

We’re building what our builder calls a 5 level split, split side to side not a split entry. It’s perfect for us to have open concept main level with more private hobby spaces on the other levels.

Currently live in split level. Payed 129k and about to start some remodel and throw her up for sale. It's been good and lots of space but I'm so sick of the stairs. Makes cleaning and laundry a pain. I also hate the small bathrooms and kitchen. Hoping it sales.

Split level going up less stairs than two story house or ranch w/basement. Again split level going down less stairs at one times.

Also you can have the open effect by a railing at upper level. Have LR on main level, go up 6 or 7 steps to the master br plus miscellaneous, plus 2 BR + ba. go back down to LR and down 6 steps for family room plus 4th BR and bath, storage. Garages off LR level.
