You hit three points that I think are huge: rolling weight, front suspension and a dropper post. My 2015 fat bike is from a small company out of Australia called Salted Bikes. It’s an all carbon build and really is fun to ride all seasons. It came with 80mm aluminum wheels, which I upgraded to DT Swiss hubs. I have also purchased a set of 650b Easton ARC 35 wheels that I run 3” Schwalbe Nobby Nics for non-snow season. Both wheel sets are alum. But this option of the Nextie rims may just have me going carbon. One other setup change that I made for winter is when I run my 26” x 80mm wheels with 4” 45NTH VanHelgas, I swap the suspension fork for a rigid carbon fork. It really is amazing how the bike comes to life when I do that. Even riding on dirt it just wants to rip. I can only imagine how that would change with carbon wheels. Do you have any type of promotions from Nextie for highlighting their rims? I may just be convinced to make that jump. ;-) Thanks for the video and nice edits. You should have ten times that view count!

I have been toying with the idea of creating a separate wheelset for the winter. Never thought about changing back to a rigid fork as well, what a great suggestion Chris. I unfortunately do not have any promotions from Nextie, my channel is far too small for them to give a crap about me, lol. I just do reviews on products I use. Maybe someday I will get to a point where companies will send me things to test... that would be cool. As for the view count, you are much too kind. Thanks for watching as always.

Dude… your top 3 upgrades to a FatBike are spot on … I SWEAR by my RS Bluto fork and running a dropper makes a huge difference… I haven’t gone carbon on any of my bikes but I love the idea to drop weight

I would highly recommend it forrest, the technology in carbon rim construction has come a long way. They are super light and durable. And you know if they can hold up to my dumba** riding in gnar, they will be more than enough for a skilled rider like u.

I have a Salsa Mukluk Carbon XT with the huge 4.6" tires. I got it for long ride comfort, efficiency and year round versatility as I live in New England but like how Fat Bikes handle the trails as I don't like technical stuff, just merely enjoy losing myself on the local power line, fire road and forest trails regardless of conditions. Already the Mukluk was pretty efficient compared to my heavy hardtail thanks to the stiffer carbon and grippier tires. It wasn't slow on roads either, a little faster than my already mentioned hardtail even. Then I got high end carbon wheels for it not mentioning names, don't think it matters much except I got the pricier *good* ones. Wow. The same rides take about 10-15% less but the biggest difference is on road. I can fast cruise pretty close to 20mph especially if I bend forward and try to act like I have a drop bar bike. But the speed is absolutely shocking, with those big tires it gets really noisy and impressive. On a recent ride where my son was using my wife's (same size) carbon fat bike a Bearclaw Balthazar I picked up second hand for cheap that came stock with carbon wheels we caused sheer terror at a local park. On an asphalt tract near the parking lot one woman raised her arm in shock, as in cringing like she was afraid of our noise and speed like we were going to hit her. Another woman walking her golden retriever had her dog jump up against her and loudly yelp in fear, intimidated. That same dog barked with its tail between its legs on our leg out a bit later when we were going back. A third woman tried to stop us and we did; she gave me hell for using a "motorized vehicle which is banned and not welcome at our park which is for everyone to use safely". I explained that I am really fit and have a fast rig that looks like it has no business being that fast and why, stiffness. Another time I had the police called on me in a park that allows MTB but does not allow motorized vehicles. The cops came, accosted me and figured out that indeed, I was running on human power and was 100% legal. I got urged to be safe but BIG compliments on how fast I was and how unbelievably impressive and awesome my rig was. Anyhow I feel like my fat bike carbon wheels allow me and my bike to really shine to the top of my physical capabilities including grip, stability and responsiveness which normally are mutually exclusive. Have a mixed gravel/road/MTB century in the mountains of New Hampshire come May. I am glad for this upgrade, will make it far less effort and take less time. The bike is much more controllable, maneuverable yet stable. It..... just..... won't..... let..... go..... You have to see and try this setup to believe what a difference it can make because fat bikes which most ignorant people think should be slow can be jaw droppingly, mind numbingly fast especially when set up like that. For the record I have a different brand of fat bike wheels but regardless of how you proceed, it is a VERY worthwhile upgrade. Very much, highly recommended!

Great stories Mike! Yes, I hope more people see the value in carbon rims, especially on fat bikes. These days they are not that far out of reach regarding pricing. They dramatically change the dynamics of the ride and increase efficiency. Thank you for watching and leaving a comment.

@@TrailSage I also got carbon wheels on my cheapo gravel bike and again, huge difference. I recently got into the road bike thing and again, also went carbon with my road bike. Basically in all three cases you get significantly more speed, better responsiveness, more grip, more predictable yet faster handling. Everything you want basically improves. The only downside is acute impact durability. As long as your tires have enough pressure to hold then the durability of carbon rims is better as they can bend more and return to shape vs aluminum or alloy but the one weakness is if anything sharp and or hard hits them. This is the only downside. But it's wonderful that prices have come down. Not a brand fanboy as I have three different brands on my three different bikes but it doesn't matter as long as it's not a $150 ebay cheap chinese junk-o carbon wheels are the single best upgrade you can make to your bike.

So what were you riding before you Got these nice wheels :-) I’m running dt Swiss big ride and novatec hubs and are looking at som similar rims from light bicycle and will save about 175 grams per rim…but it will also be more narrow then the big ride…are the jj 4.0 still ok in the profile mounted on the 60 mm rim ? Thanks again and happy trails from Scandinavia
@TrailSage
@TrailSage Жыл бұрын
Hey Rasmus, I was running some generic aluminum fat bike rims previously. Regarding the Jumbo Jims, yes they will work on a 60 mm rim. My fat bike carbon hoops are 50 mm and they fit and work just fine. I have a video on the Jumbo Jims here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z3O0eaCQrNFpgac

Here in Canada, I have never seen anyone use a Fat Bike in other seasons than winter. We also have a lot a fat bikers in the winter, everyone switches from their Mountain bike to fat bike comes winter. nobody uses a suspension on them, there is just no use for them, the tire is plenty. having a good carbon fork will save weight over suspension and goinf tubeless is saving even more. that is less expensive all arond with the same benefits
@TrailSage
@TrailSage 2 жыл бұрын
Your right Jean-Francios, if you only ride fat bikes in the snow you will be better off without suspension. Unfortunately, on regular terrain the fat tires feel like a boucy ball and do not provide adequate traction. The suspension fork can dampen the rebound and keep the tire on the ground. Thanks for watching and for the feedback. Happy riding.

Sage - another great review and learning so much about bikes on your channel. Considering a Specialized Tarmac SL7 Expert - a little concerned if wait times for rims are 2-3 months, I may not get a bike until 2022 😂. Any thoughts on that bike? Thanks!
@TrailSage
@TrailSage 3 жыл бұрын
The Tarmac is a great bike Reto! The SL7 Expert has some great specs, of course for that price it better be good right?! I think you will be pleased with that bike if you pull the trigger. If you buy it at a local dealer (which I recommend) make sure they fit you to the bike. Hit me up with questions anytime, I am happy to help.
