Nice build..! As an old school installer and owner of my own shop (3yrs) I will say this... Labor is expensive & when doing the work as a DIY home project the major concern is time available to do the job as quickly & clean as possible with as little sanding as possible cause sanding sucks lol... When I did custom pods I used sweatshirt material or a thick cotton Tee-shirt type material for the single reason of I hate sanding bondo because sweatshirt material or cotton is smooth... Using fleece creates more labor with a higher cost in materials and time & all the sanding needed prior to bondo... The easy way is use the materials I mentioned & if needed do two layer for strength but since reinforcement is done by glassing the back side usually one layer is enough & by using a smooth fabric it reduces the use of bondo etc... often times a simple scuff of 80grit is all that's needed... Super nice build as a father son project..! I'm just tossing out the way I did it... Hope it helps if you do this again someday.

Good job for your first ones. I would recommend not leaving the flaps inside of the speaker mounting locations. Even though you cannot see them from the front, those should be trimmed flush with the hole. The long flap will get inside the speaker from the backside and over time will create noise. I also recommend the Weldwood Landau contact cement mentioned below. I've used the cement you have here and had it turn gooey and let go in the summer heat (Oklahoma), but the Weldwood Landau has never failed me.

@@blazeaglory 3M super 77 and super 90 have both turned to goo on me inside of a month in the heat. 25 years ago super 77 held great, but I tried it again a couple of years back only to have it let go. Not sure if the formula has changed or not, but I'm guessing it has over the years.

You should have put a piece on the bottom of what you’re calling the base board that’s the same shape as the opening of the pocket on the door. This way would cover the opening for the door pocket and make wrapping the door panel with the vinyl much easier and cleaner. Not bad for your first try thought.

How many coats of fiberglass in total? I was thinking 2 on top and 1 inside with the mat. But was also told it needs to be 1/4+ thick. I’m currently building pods from this video. (Helped me a lot!!) and all is left is fiberglass
@NextLevelCarAudio
@NextLevelCarAudio 3 жыл бұрын
Awesome man! I put only 1 good layer on the inside and that’s it. If I built bigger pods (more speakers/weight then I probably would have done 2. But this is more than strong enough. Solid, zero Flex, legit.

@@NextLevelCarAudio well I'm looking to put 4 6.5 skar mids and 4 8 skar mids in my tahoe along with 4 tweets. I just figured how to run them on the current amp I have due to it being 1200 max for a 4 channel. But its going to sound real nice hopefully when I'm done with it

Could you have wrapped it after the fiberglass hardening and fiberglass insides?
@NextLevelCarAudio
@NextLevelCarAudio 2 жыл бұрын
If you put in the sweat and sanded it, technically yes. Otherwise it will look bumpy and uneven. The bondo is just so much easier to sand and smooth out than solid fiberglass. Plus it adds some thickness. If not using bondo, consider several layers of fiberglass.

How do you like the ds 18 style loud speakers compared to the quality of a standard component speaker or coaxial like jl , Fosgate or image dynamics or focal etc
@anglerandy5736
@anglerandy5736 3 жыл бұрын
I'm wondering this myself it looks like they have the integrated bullet tweeter with no driver in the center but ds18 has components that have these and a seperatw bullet tweeter. Is that just more highs or I the center thing just a dust cap? I saw it called a dust protector on thier site.

These are meant for one thing... to scream. Surprisingly they do sound very clear and good. But not as clean as top shelf components. But my goal was SPL not SQ

Yes! But if the mounting panel is not flat like mines you will likely have to do a fiberglass shell for the base. Pretty easy to do

Hey can you give me a link for the vinyl you used in this video? I'm scouring Amazon and retail stores but not sure exactly what to get. It needs to be 4 way stretch and black that's about all I know. A direct link to what YOU used would be insanely helper man.
