I grow potatoes in a 42 gallon black trash bag half filled with compost and place 4 whole potatoes into the bag... poke holes in the bottom and roll the top down... I get crazy yields... 20lbs per bag... you can do it too... its very easy and effective

I must be lucky with my potatoes because all I’ve done when planting is put the blade of my shovel in the ground about 9” down, lifted the soil, dropped in a cut piece of seed potato that has at least one eye and let the dirt fall back. I have also used some of my potatoes that I’ve wintered in the basement. When my potatoes start to send out stems, I break off the stem and put the potatoes in a frig, and plant those potatoes as above. I’ve never used store potatoes. I tried a potato in a 5 gallon bucket once and the potato rotted. I’ve never sprayed my potatoes with the aspirin but since following your show, I do my tomatoes and peppers with great result so will spray my potatoes this summer. When I plant my potatoes deep, they do take about 3 weeks before I see them crown. I have left 18” between potatoes but like smaller potatoes too. I have dill growing wild all over the garden so yea!! Love your show. Thank you.

I love your videos…. The more gardening videos I watch the more I wonder why I seem to be the only person that uses organic grocery store potatoes and I cut them into pieces making sure there is at least 1 eye per piece. I don’t ever plant just a whole potato. And I plant them in a mixture of partially decomposed leaves and pine needles from my yard filled half full in a large yard trash bin with the top 1/3 cut off. And as they get taller, I fill in with compost (also from my yard). This is how I saw old timers do it when I was kid (or sometimes they did it with old tires and stacked more tires and dirt on as they grew), but I’ve never seen anyone else these days doing it like this. Anyone else do it a not normal way?

I just wrote a comment and it disappeared. So if I comment twice, sorry. I’ve never put much thought into potatoes other than rotate, don’t plant where I’ve had tomatoes or peppers the previous year. I cut my potatoes so that they have at least one eye and drop the piece about 9” down in the ground, that’s it. My over wintered potatoes will sometimes have sprouted long sprouts. I just snap off the sprout and put the whole potato in the ground. So far so good. I have raised beds but have never done my potatoes in the raised beds. I usually plant rows of beans near the potatoes. I’ve never put my beans in raised beds either. I am going to try beans in my raised beds this summer. Love your show. Thank you for all your concise personable presentation. I look forward to your shows.

I love how The Lord works with timing. My wife was prepping our potato bed and potatoes yesterday, and she wondered about the shriveled ones. And here's your video today with the answer. So cool. Great video, and we love the aspirin immune booster. One small detail not shown is which way to plant the potatoes: chit up or down. We know the answer, but others may not. Thanks for all your hard work Brian!

Zone 5B here. I grew potatoes for the first time last year with zero knowledge of what I was doing. Even so I ended up with a lot of potatoes though many were fingerling size (due to me not even knowing the type of potato I was growing and how long they needed to remain in the ground). This year I read up on how to start potatoes. I kept them in a paper bag for a week then chitted them in a back room for another 10 days. Cut them up and had them sit another 3 days to callus up. Just planted them today and put a reminder in my phone so I'll know roughly when to start digging them.

Awesome video! My potatoes will hopefully be ready soon. They've been growing for about 2 months. My family and I have a small backyard garden! Less than 2 years in our new home and we've completely transformed the backyard into a beautiful garden space. We're learning how to home can and preserve what we grow. We are beginner gardeners, growing and learning along the way. Recently I started a gardening channel to help encourage others to start growing as well. No time better than now to learn self sufficiency. 💚🌱

I leave my potatoes in my beds over winter and harvest as I need them, when I finish off harvesting a bed I plant the last smaller ones for next year in each bed. So mid November last year i finished off a bed and planted it with the smaller ones in November. Did the next bed mid January, just finished the 3rd bed. In my climate they store through the winter undisturbed in the ground best... even planting 3 to 4 months early they keep just fine until they want to sprout.

@@ritadaniels1268 I am on the edge of 8a & 8b. Our first frost is usually end of Oct and last frost is mid May. We get night time lows down to 17 degrees at times but usually stays in the 25 to 30 range. 4 to 8 inches of snow a few times in the winter. Mark out part of a bed and try it with a few potatoes this winter, it may work for you. I am in a small isolated mountain community in the middle of SoCal at just above 4,500 ft elevation, as a kid here they farmed 100"s of acres of potatoes. The farmer that managed the fields had no problem with town folks getting the small potatoes that were left after harvest. We could find them into easter the next year and they would then start sprouting.... Remembering that is what led me to try leaving some in the ground.

I’ve planted more potatoes this year than ever before, in all sorts of containers. Some were seed potatoes I bought for the purpose and others are potatoes that were in my pantry that were sprouting. I didn’t chit the seed potatoes first, but so far they have all sprouted. Last year I planted potatoes and sweet potatoes in-ground with little luck. I also had grow bags of potatoes which produced well, so this year they are all in containers.

Last year, I grew potatoes for the first time. I grew 3 different varieties in half of my 4ftx8ftx18in raised bed. (I grew sweet potatoes in the other half.) Because of the depth of my beds, I didn't worry about "hilling" them up. I just planted them and let them go. We got a really wonderful harvest, but it was a bit difficult to get all of the potatoes out of the bed. Actually, we did end up missing a few. We discovered this when they suddenly started sprouting! We let them go just to see what would happen. We ended up with about 3-4 plants the grew and ended up with an additional 3-5 pounds of "extra" potatoes! :D So, this year, I'm going to see if I can get 2 harvests out of my potatoes this year (on purpose this time). I'm growing Nicola and Purple Majesty potatoes in cattle mineral tubs. i watched how Tony from Simplify Gardening planted his. He actually doesn't hill up his container potatoes (which he explains WAY better than I ever could!) and I'm anxious to see how they do. :) Based on my results last year, I don't think I'll have to hill mine either. I've also got my buckets connected to my new drip irrigation system, so hopefully watering won't be an issue this year. :D Also, I got your book.....both the print and the EBook versions. The way you have things organized is AMAZING! This will ABSOLUTELY become a reference book for me in the future! Now, I can take my tablet outside with me and still look things up if needed while I'm direct sowing things. ;) Well done!

I planted potatoes three weeks ago, in a thirty gallon grow bag, eight inches deep. I got my first sprout after two weeks. Week three, I hope they are all up. It seems they were fruitful and multiplied. I cut the potatoes to divide the sprouts and hardened them off for a few days prio to planting. I planted seven sprouts, and have ten plants. All look healthy. They are covered with folded towels tonight and tomorrow night for frost protection. If the foredcast stays favorable, I start transplanting tomatoes and peppers into my raised beds next week.

I have been growing potatoes in 20lb grow bags for a couple of years ago and they are by far one of the best and easiest for me. I have had great success. Just make sure you have good, loose soil and make sure you know what type you're growing. I don't always let them chit but they do come up faster if you do chit them first. I also use seed potatoes just because I've had better harvests with them.

I’m growing potatoes this year for the very first time ever, in 15 gallon grow bags from Home Depot (5 blue and 5 green … my garden has to have some colorful creativity too). I followed the St. Patrick’s Day planting old tradition (Independence, MO.) I have long wanted to grow my own potatoes after having the best ever new potatoes 40 years ago from a friend’s garden, but have been intimidated by the process and space required. Grow bags were just the solution, “hilling”-adding potting soil as they grow. Will see how it goes. At least I’ll be learning as I grow. I’m reading your new book and planning on adding companion flowers and beans nearby!

Potatoes need to be hilled in order for you to get the most out of your plants. Cover every stem and all leaves except for the top 3". We grow Potatoes from the store every year and have had large yields. Barrasics are great companion plants to put with Potatoes. Horseradish roots in the 4 corners of your potato bed keeps pets away. Garlic is good to plant next to Potatoes as well. That helps deter pets.

Last year my potatoes did not do very well. This coming growing season I think I am going to take a 55 gallon drum and cut it in half and test two different growing methods. If the thought I have ends up working well I will be sure to share the info with you.

Hope this helps. I put 8 year old sheep manure on garden tilled under. first I tilled 2 rows 75ft long 10inches deep raked dirt back in hole left a hill bout 10in. High.planted potatoes 12-14in.apart. watered the hills. After 3 weeksI sprayed Miracle-Gro on each plant. Do it again every 4 weeks. Come fall my potatoes were huge most anyway & solid. So big I could put 6 in a 5 gallon bucket that's all bucket would hold. I had that garden 3 years every year my harvest was awesome.

I grew red potatoes a few years ago and in pots, using seed potatoes, and they were delicious. A few months ago I planted chitted red potatoes from the store. I had a reasonable sprout rate. However, a few weeks ago something, probably the dreaded potato beetle had a feast. Within a week, several of the plants, overnight turned yellow - leaves and stem, and died. The stem looked like it had been killed by a freeze, but no freeze or even remotely cool weather occured. I was able to dig up 2# of small potatoes from 2 of the dead plants. I then went out and bought seed potatoes, even though it is a bit late for our area. I wasn't able to find red potatoes, but will be planting Norkotah and Yukon Gold this weekend. Keeping my fingers crossed! I do not know if it was a disease from the plants or stress from being attacked that killed them. I am going to replant some in the same container and see what happens. I don't want to have to quarantine my dirt!

I am growing potatoes for the first time this year! I am going to use now bags but also wondered about putting them in my land scraping, I have a bed with just hydrangeas and boxwood and if the leaf low would be a great ground cover ... I need to do more reading..... just trying to utilize garden space.

So glad to catch you just a day after you posted this video so you’ll get my comment. I can’t seem to find you when you’re live. How do I catch you? Where do I go? Now potatoes……I’ve grown them before both in San Diego County as well as here in South Carolina, zone 7b. I always chit them even the ones I used to use from the grocery store. In San Diego County I never was able to get potato starts so had to rely on grocery store ones. Didn’t have any problems with growing them so long as I chitted them. Thanks for a great channel, I’m totally enjoying it. Keep at it!

Last year, I planted potatoes in two large tubs. Neither did well probably due to bad raised bed soil that stunted their growth. Recently, I bought a bag of Russet and a bag of Yukon Gold organic potatoes because supply has been low at the store. I put them in a back entry room that stays 55°F, thinking they would last longer than in my warm house. Every single potato chitted before I could eat the first one, and I didn't have them long. So, I am going to plant in a newer bed where I had planted my corn last year. Hoping these do much better!

So I’ve planted potatoes in 10 gallon brown bags…should I plant a bag with beans and place next to them or any other suggestion, please? By the way, they are 4 weeks old and already at the top of the bags! Have added soil gradually as they’ve grown along with fertilizer. First time growing and I’m thrilled! Thanks for all your videos!

@@NextLevelGardening I am confused, if the beans will share the nitrogen with neighbouring plants how will it share the nitrogen if the potatoes are in a separate container and not in the ground? Love all your videos!

Good video Brian, I'm actually on my way out to plant my seed potatoes this evening. I'm unsure about planting onions as companions, I've googled are they a good companion plant and the results are pretty extremes 50/50 yes yes yes and no no no. I don't have the space to do 1 bed with and another without to trial, so I'll just go for it. I'll throw some radishes in too, I have too many seeds and my father and brother in law love them.....they just taste like peppery raw potatoes to me, not my style.

I'm a lazy and time poor gardener so just throw any sprouted store potatoes (Coles spuds for anyone in Australia) into a grow bag and pile on the compost. It works fine - although I suspect I may get a few more if I had chitted them, and that it would depend whether store potatoes have some anti-sprouting treatment. Australian stores don't seem to treat them in any way so they are fine to use

This is my second year trying potatoes. Last year the heat stunted them as we live here in California, but we’re using the small potatoes from last year as seed potatoes. We’re growing indeterminates and doing a potato box tower. I’ve seen people love or hate them and I’m curious how it’ll turn out now that we have a better set-up. We’re getting ready to add our second layer of soil soon. Hopefully they’ll turn out well.
