RIP to Cecil George Edwards (Succulent Chinese Meal man). He passed away this year. After a case of mistaken identity he was arrested in a Chinese restaurant by police and dragged to their car. bit of backstory of how crazy those aussie cup upsets Central coast mariners are the only team in Australian history to have won a treble with a asian trophy (last year they won the a league, the a league finals and the asian Europa league) They just lost to Heidelberg united who play in the NPL (Australia second division). To be fair, Heidelburg united, they have had some crazy upsets in the past beating perth glory in 2017. South Melbourne beating wellington is a big shock too considering that wellington have made some good signings this season. Oakleigh cannons had to play their home game 20km away from their home because of poor stadium quality and they still beat Sydney FC who are the record a league champions Its also interesting to note that before the a league, the top flight was the NSL. south melbourne and Heidelberg are both known as 'big and historic clubs' and were both mainstays in the NSL. Heidelberg was in it from 1977-1987, 1989, 1990-1995 and were NSL runners up 2 times and won the 2 NSL cups (sort of like the Australia cup but different) South Melbourne was in it the NSL its entire existence 1977-2004 and won 4 titles and 2 NSL cups. Oakleigh on the other hand are a lesser known club rising up the Victorian NSL and becoming a real force around the 2000s and 2010s I think that the most interesting story from the cup this year is a team called FC Melbourne Srbija. A serbian immigrant team based in the suburb of Burnley, Melbourne. They play in Victorian NPL 3 which is the equivalent to playing in the 5th or 6th division of Australia. (also forgot to mention, the NPL isn't a country wide comp, just state and territory level, melbourne and sydney teams don't play in the same league) FC Melbourne Srbija have made the RO16 as of writing this. That's as crazy as if sutton united made the RO16 at the fa cup There have been some crazy things happening in Australia PS: Oakleigh and Heidelberg are playing each other in the RO16 so that is a must watch
