I think of this like a way for her to really create her own entire world. I love the natural chemistry of her family, and their designs are fantastic. I remember seeing a commenter who came up with a backstory for them. An ice giant picked up two children, a wendigo and dryad, on his many travels and married a woman who already had a son from a previous marriage to help him raise the girls.
