So i looked into and I misremembered. The final game of the season he had a 60 yard run that got called back early in the game that the ref later admitted was wrong. It would not have gotten him the record it would’ve put him really close had it stood. He had 134 yards without and the extra 60 would have put him at 2066 yards only 40 yards short of breaking the record. Considering it was early in the game its not unlikely that he could have gotten the record but the game played out differently and cj ended up 100 yards short

As for Derrick Thomas, he almost had 8 sacks but Dave Krieg was able to shake him and throw the game-winning TD pass. The Seahawks starting LT during that game is current Chiefs OL Coach Andy Heck.

In addition, Krieg would later become Thomas's teammate for two seasons starting in 1992 when the Chiefs acquired him as a Plan B free agent. After taking every snap in 1992 for a Chiefs team that made the playoffs, Krieg would be Joe Montana's backup in 1993.

The frustrating thing about Watt's "almost" is that there was a tackle he made late in the season, I want to say it was on Huntley, that was counted as a -2 yard "run" by the quarterback instead of a sack for some reason. He should have the sack record.

If anything, Jared Allen (2011) and Justin Houston (2014) were more agonizing than T.J. Watt (2021) since at least T.J. tied the record. Allen & Houston both fell 0.5 sacks short even though they both tried their damnest in their respective seasons' last game (Allen got 3.5 sacks vs the Bears while Houston got 4 sacks vs the Chargers).

My favorite almost record: Drew Brees has the most consecutive games with a passing touchdown at 54 as well as the fifth longest streak at 45. Those two streaks are separated by a single game: @ Atlanta on November 29, 2012. Had he thrown just one touchdown in that game, he'd have a streak of exactly 100, eclipsing the second longest streak of Brady's 52.

It was super unfortunate. Tbf that was his worst season in New England since around 2005, bc he lost all his receivers and Julian Edelman was the only good receiver after Gronk tore his ACL. But yea the two of them both lost the record in embarrassing ways
