The 1969-70 Kansas City Chiefs were the first wild card team to make it to the Super Bowl and win the Super Bowl. In the opening round of the 1969-70 playoffs, the Chiefs knocked off the defending Super Bowl Champion New York Jets on the road in New York, 13-6. In the 1969-70 Championship game the Chiefs defeated their arch rivals, the Oakland Raiders in Oakland, 17-7. The Raiders seemingly had the Chiefs' number having beaten them 7 out of the last 8 times they had played each other. The Raiders had beaten the Chiefs three times in the 1968-69 season. And the Raiders had beaten Chiefs twice in the 1969-70 season. So the Chiefs' victory over the Raiders in the final AFL Championship game made that win so much sweeter. And then came Super Bowl 4 and the decisive 23-7 victory over the heavily favored NFL Champion Minnesta Vikings. What an amazing post season run for the 1969-70 Kansas City Chiefs !!!!! This victory proved that the AFL was equal to or better than the NFL heading into the 1970-71 season when the two leagues would officially merge.

I was in 6th grade and followed the Chiefs the whole season. I got in trouble from my teacher because I kept drawing the arrowhead on the chalk board. Great memories of that season.

Remember watching with friends as a high school senior. Great memories. They abused the vikings

Then the Vikings "abused" the Chiefs the following September on the opening game of the 1970 season 27-10. The Chiefs actually looked pretty bad in this game. If the Vikings simply had more time to study what the Chiefs did (instead of just one week) I'm sure they would have won SB 4

The vikings duplicated the same reg season situation in 76 vs Steelers ,they encountered opponents in chiefs and Steelers who were infested with over confidence after recent SB thrashing of vikings who were ingrained with apex emotional rage in winning both reg season games .

In the late Otis Taylor's book "The Need to Win" he mentioned how Hank Stram would use a crane-like device (noted at 07:45) to overlook the practice field and see how players were performing or needed to improve. Mr. Taylor also noted that when he would go to Stram's office there would be boxes and boxes of chocolates and other sweets (likely "perks" for Stram doing promotions for businesses in KC). Unfortunately Stram's "sweet tooth" eventually caught up to him and he developed diabetes and ultimately passed away from complications from it.

Up to '68 nobody was spending any money on A's tix, with the Royals starting in '69 then there was competition for Chiefs.

The Vikings were heavily favored in this game the chiefs won but they didn’t say it was an upset they really believed they were gonna win the game

They certainly did win the following September in Bloomington--27-10. With more time to prepare and having had a chance to develop a proper game plan the Vikings had no problem beating the Chiefs. I remember KC QB Len Dawson saying he was determined to beat the Vikings in the opening game of 1970 to prove the SB wasn't a "fluke". As it turned out Dawson through 2 INTs (one leading to a TD).
