The first codified football game is Australian Rules Football, in 1858. Soccer, Rugby were about 6 years later. There is no question some form of football had been played previously, we know Australian Aboriginals had stuffed a possum skin with grass and kicked it, as every civilisation on Earth has done, but it bears NO relationship with AFL. We know Tom Wills went to Rugby School, returned to Australia with a football to keep his cricketers fit in winter. He was invited to the meeting to formulate Rulesfor the new game, but none of his suggestions were taken up at all. Australian Rules Football truly is a virgin game, brand new in every respect.

It doesn't score more points going through the post, it's just so they can get a better position to take the conversation kick you get after getting a Try (Touchdown... so-called because in Rugby, where American Football comes from, you have to touch the ball down on the ground to score). Passing is sideways or backwards, but you can kick the ball forwards. And hats are 'Scrum Caps', they are to protect your head from scrapes and cuts, as well as protecting the ears from impact or getting torn off while in a Scrum, which is that big group from the two teams pushing against each other. Funny that in American Football a touchdown is scored when you reach the end zone. In Rugby it's called a TRY and you physically have to touch the ball down to score. Also in NFL, a touchdown is followed by a conversion from in front of the goal, but in rugby the kick is taken in line with where the ball was touched down, so if you score just inside the sidelines, that's where the conversion is taken from. Scoring: Try/touchdown = 5 pts, goalkick/conversion to try = 2 pts, Penalty Kick = 3 pts, Drop goal = 3 pts. Only the ball carrier can be tackled by an opposing player, and a tackle is only complete if the player is held with at least one knee on the ground, if not the player may continue to pass the ball. Any player carrying the ball may kick it at any time, usually to relieve pressure or to gain ground. It can also be kicked out of play, but it must bounce infield before going out or play restarts from where it was kicked. A good kicker can gain his team 60 - 70 yards this way.

Rugby tackling is taught as ‘cheek to cheek’ with the sweet spot being the ball carriers hip. Head to head is a massive no no and is usually completely accidental.

It's a bit of a shame that Rugby has become such a power game. A lot of the finesse has disappeared over the last few decades. It's worth pointing out that many of these hits are fouls. Tackling above the shoulder, late hits, deliberately taking the man without the ball, etc. are fouls and can lead to dismissal, so are not as common as these clips would suggest.

You have to have downward pressure in the ball to score a try when you go over the try line (5 points). You can then kick a conversion taken in line where the try was scored. In other words its easier to convert a try (2 points) when the try is scored close to or under the posts. Any contact with the head of the ball carrier is now illegal, and the tackler could be either sent off or given 10 minutes in the sin bin. Best team game in the world, bar none

The goal kick following the Try (touch down) is taken from the angle of where the try happened. So if you take the try underneath the goal post, the kick for the goal is directly in line with the posts making the kicker’s job easier.

The scores that you are seeing are called "Tries". They are called that because originally they weren't scores. You got no points for doing so. What you did get was an ATTEMPT to kick at goal. You got a TRY. You do not get extra points for scoring between the posts. After touching the ball down in goal you get a conversion attempt for two more points. Where you take that kick from is determined by where ingoal you touch the ball down. If you touch the ball down inches from the sideline the conversion is taken from inches from the sideline. Obviously, the closer to the center you touch the ball down the kick will be easier. I know you are fans of gridiron but have you ever played? Have you worn the equipment? If you have, you know that while the pads are supposed to be "protective" but the reality is that they are used as weapons. They give you a false feeling of invulnerability. Incidents of serious injury are much more common in American football than they are in rugby. Another thing. Many (most?) NFL players wear knee braces. They are thin metal hinges strapped to the leg above and below the knee to lower the chance of lateral movement of the knee causing injury. Sounds like a good idea. The problem with them is that once you allow one player to wear them you have to protect every other player on the pitch from being injured by the brace.

im a former rugby player, lost 8 teeth a finger and half an ear playing professionally back in the day, while living in the states i got to have a friendly 1v1 with an nfl guy, his tackles were shit, he barely even made me wobble, and my tackle put him on his ass faster than he could react, us rugby guys from the 80's era of rugby when if you lost a tooth or broke an arm, you just kept playing and got shit done edit: i had to retire after i put a player into intensive care at a friendly, i speared the guy and planted my head into his ribs, breaking 6 of them and puncturing a lung

So. There's no extra points for scoring a try between the posts. It just makes the conversion kick easier as the kick is straight in front of the posts. If the try is scored on the outer corner it makes it harder as to see the post gap properly you have to move further away from the try line. It five Points a try. Two extra for the conversion. Three for a penalty and three for a drop goal. Which isn't used nearly enough nowadays, it's how Johnny Wilkinson won the world Cup for us in the early naughties.

NFL is a game where: Only one man kicks the ball A team gains ground by throwing the ball forward A touchdown is when the ball isn't touched down but 'sort of in the area' There are 4 teams of 11 playing The game stops for a commercial break whenever the ball touches the ground The game is broken into 4 x quarters as the audience can't keep up No play lasts for more than 10 seconds for the same reason The players wear helmets (? 😂), paint their faces (?🤣) and wear padding (?🤭) Whereas Rugby is played: By both men and women With 2 teams of 15 for Union or 13 for league For 2 halves of 40 minutes With no padding, helmets or warpaint (well OK the ladies may do their eyelashes) Where the ball cannot be passed forwards only backwards. Where only the player with the ball may be tackled. On regardless unless there is a foul, someone dies or when the ball is physically touched down behind the Try Line. With a conversion kick taken from a line back from wherever the ball is grounded. 'Under the posts' just makes a kick easier. Where any kick over bar between the posts scores points (Conversion, Penalty or Drop Goal) ONLY so that after a game everyone, walking, limping or on a stretcher goes to the pub for a few bevvies. Surprisingly there are more injuries in NFL and they tend to be more serious. Women rugby players' bodies take bigger knocks than an NFL player. Go figure.

It's pretty simple lads, game of 2 40minute halves. The ball has to placed across the line at each end of thr field by only being carried forward or passed backwards to another on your team or kicked forward and chased down although kicking thr ball forward is typically as you want to retain possession so not always advised unless your are offensively being pushed back into your defending teritory and there is a chance the other team could steal the ball and get a "Try" . Passing a ball "laterally" is not allowed as if you watch youl see a running line of players passing the ball across the field as they all run forward in the common formation and attack , the ball still has to be passed backwards to a player who is still technically behind you no mater how "lateral" they may apear due to camera angles or it will cause a Penalty for a "forward pass" Points are 5points for a TRY (Touchdown) where you then get a chance at 2 more points if your kicker can succefully kick the ball during stopped play between to 2 upright posts, this is called a Conversation. Ie he successfully converted the Try to make it 7points on the board. Or if your team causes a penalty for breaking a rule the other team gets to take a kick at the posts for 3 points during stopped play , or another few options in thier favour which i wont explain as it can get confusing. This stoppage is simply called a Penality. There are MANY little tactical rules and plays around little kicks forward etc but that's the jist of it very boiled down and simplified. Also , most of these hits would have resulted in a penalty for dangerous play or late tackles as you can't reasonably tackle a player without the ball. There are also many saftey rules around how you tackle a player,ie no shoulder charges which is defined by simply leading into a tackle with your shoulder with no obvious intention to wrap the player up with arms to take that player to the ground. No intentionally taking a player off thier feet and dumping them on thier head etc tackled players legs must not raise above his own shoulders, ie being flipped in the air , the tackler is responsible for ensuring this doesnt happen, even by mistake , but obviously does happen. The rules get super picky and complicated once you dive in but in a nut shell that's it, that's International Rugby.

1) The early hit to head was not legal, would be serious dismissal in current rules, same applies to at least 3 others in video, don't take that as being fine. The heavy ones hitting their torso are fine, only thing is if they pick them up they need to drop back not on head. 2) You wanna be under the posts or as close in as you can as the kick after for more points lines up with where its put down so easier the close to the centre. 3) Tackle after the kick could be penalized if too late 4) Two tackles in the air were both not legal, you can jump and also contest but not tackle in the air, often see them get nailed legitimately right after their feet hit the ground though and that can be hard hits.

There are a couple of other versions of rugby (league and union) not mentioned here, they are both wheelchair versions, you could lose fingers in those versions, but hey all part of the fun. Oh and why ruin someone's career with an nfl contract? That's a ridiculous idea, most nfl players can't or don't think, can't tackle properly and rely on their helmets to make a tackle, hence the enormous numbers of concussion. PS. If you noticed, they try to tackle around the waist or legs. Anything around the neck you’ll be off the pitch. Also if you do notice they do try too keep the other player safe, by bringing them to the ground as safe as possible. You can’t lift and spear a guy head first. 9:18 a cleat to the face. Gentlemen, let me introduce you to the concept of rucking. When theres a tackle, and people pile on, or when a maul collapses, you have to approach it from the back, you cant go in from the side to retrieve the ball. If you can see the ball in the pile up but can't reach it, you can ruck it out with the sprigs (cleats) on your boots. If an opposition player is holding on to it (against the rules) or its just stuck in the pile, you can ruck them as well. People get quite enthusiastic with the rucking, too. More than once I finished the game with big, welted up, occasionally blood oozing ruckmarks, and once I got bloodbinned after I got stuck on the wrong side of a ruck with the ball trapped between me and the ruck and a bunch of large farm boys taking the opportunity to put their sprigs to good use. Great fun, I came back from the blood bin properly revved up and got player of the match. There was a sprig and mouth guard check before the match to make sure no-one had sharp ones. People don't sharpen them, but wearing down walking on concrete (like the change rooms) wears the rounded end flat over the seasons, and the flat end has an edge.

When watching rugby highlights take note of players numbers; they define the players positions in the team. 1-3 are front row forwards (strong, powerful players with 'mass'), 4 and 5 second row forwards (usually the tallest players in the team), 6-8 back row forwards (strong, mobile, aggressive 'spoilers' who probably cover more ground than any other players), 9-10 half backs (playmakers who link forwards and backs), 11 and 14 wings, 12 and 14 centres (midfield players) 15 full back; last line of defence but also additional attacker. Traditionally 11s and 14s are 'greyhounds' but in recent generations they can be fast AND big.

As Jurek states: American Football (initially called Gridiron) was derived from Rugby Union. Rugby was played in the US Ivy League Universities in the late 1800's and could attract crowds of 50,000. Astute US Sports people could see the opportunity for Rugby as a Professional Sport. BUT... the Rugby governing body in the UK was adement: Rugby must remain Amateur! Note: the US teams were very good and players selected mainly from US Colleges that played Rugby, won two consecutive Gold Medals at the Olympics when Rugby was part of the Olympic sports list. The new Olympic Rugby is actually Rugby 7's. So, the US developed their own game. That's why there are a number of Terms used that are familiar eg Touchdown due to the requirement to "touch down" the ball to score a Try in Rugby. A similar thing happened in England when a group wanted to take Rugby Union professional (paying players) The Rugby governing body still said "No. We remain amateur" So Rugby League was born. They also modified the rules, team sizes etc.

To score a "try" the ball has to been touched down under control to score five points. They are then entitled to take take a "conversion kick" at the goal for a further two points; the kick is taken from level with where the bowl is touched down. The closer to the posts the scorer can get the easier the conversion kick will be, however ultimately the touch down is the more important consideration.

When you get a "try" (touchdown) You get a shot at goal but you have to do it parallel to the try so touching the ball between the posts lets you take an easier shot at a "conversion", kicking the ball through the top half of the "H". These clips are great if you want to see illegal fouls but you'd actually enjoy clips of great tries much more because it's amazingly exciting.

You score 5 points for a try (touchdown). Getting a try gives you the opportunity to "convert" that try, i.e. kick the ball between the posts. If successful, you get another 2 points. So if you score your try close to the goal posts, it gives your goal kicker a much better chance of converting. There are some videos of "the 10 best tries in rugby" kind of thing, so you could watch those to see how tries are made.

I may be able to help a little and answer why they score a “try” at different places across the try line. Sometimes in rugby you see them cross the try line and then run towards the uprights and touch the ball to ground directly behind the uprights to score the try. This is because after the try is scored, just as in football, the team gets to kick a conversion kick after the try in an attempt to gain another two points, totalling for a possible 7 points, 5 for the try and 2 for the conversion kick. This kick MUST take place from a 90 degree angel from where the try was scored. So if one makes a try under the upright then you’re kicking straight at the uprights and as you score a try further from the uprights, in either direction to the left or right the angle to kick at the upright becomes sharper and harder to kick from.

With pads on, nothing would change. I have been playing rugby since the age of 13, and from the early days it is drilled into you how to tackle properly and safely, allowing the players to do so at full tilt. Having pads would not change our tackling techniques. The issue in the NFL is that players think that because they wear pads they can tackle however they want with little regard to their own and the others safety, which obviously isn't very good.

@03:27 The kick after the try is called a conversion. It has to be taken from a point perpendicular to the spot where the ball was grounded. The kicking distance from the goal line is actually chosen by the kicker. This means that a try (5 points) that is scored between the posts makes the conversion (for a further 2 points) a lot easier. The defending team is allowed to chase down the conversion kick, and they can start to chase it down as soon as the kicker commences their run-up - so you can't go too close! If you score a try in the corner, the kicker has to take it from further away just to make the gap between posts large enough to actually hit. You'll often see players not grounding the ball immediately if they are near a sideline - but rather they will first attempt to score the try closer to the the posts to make the kicker's job easier. The "try & conversion" naming is odd-sounding unless you understand the history... When the game was first invented, points were *only* awarded for a kick through the posts.... However, (as with today) you first have to earn a chance at such a kick by battling to get the ball onto the floor over the opposition's back line. So, getting the ball down gives you a "try" at kicking it though the posts. If you manage to kick it through the posts, then you have successfully "converted" your try into points. Note also, there is no concept of separate "defense" and "offense". There are 15 players per team... they all attack when they have the ball, and they all defend when the other team has it. There are replacements permitted but they are limited in number... 99% of the time, if a player is substituted, then they will remain off the pitch (normally only returning if their substitute gets injured). There is a chance for a temporary replacements (as long as you tell the ref) in cases of suspected head injury assessment (we have similar HIA regs/tests as NFL) of if someone is bleeding too much (go off for stitches/bandage). There *are* "plays" like in NFL, but they will normally be from what are called "set piece" positions - e.g. a restart, a scrum or a line out. Pretty much everything else is made up on the fly. Rugby players are rarely dumb people - you need a lot of "spare capacity" for assessment and decision making if you're going to be any good.

Going through the posts make the kick conversion easier. As it is from in front of the posts rather than lined up from where the try went over which could be close to the side line.

When you score a try (touchdown) this scores 5 points but you are now allowed to kick the ball from roughly 20 yards out over the posts ( a conversion) in line with where the ball was put down this scores an extra 2 points . So the closer to the goal posts the ball is put down easier the conversion kick is. You can kick it forward but your team mates in front of you must stand still till you overtake them and then they can take part in the chase. This is to stop players standing at the try line waiting for a kicked ball.

Where ever you put the ball down in the try zone..the kick for extra points is taken in line from where the ball is placed…the closer the try to the goal post, the easier the conversion kick for extra points…

For many decades boxing was a fairly safe sport, because it was fought bare knuckle. In other words you couldn’t punch the head or you would break all the bones in your hand. Once padded gloves were introduced head injuries became common. And so it is with contact sports - the reason the NFL has such awful injuries is because the padding allows more injurious impact. Whilst there are serious injuries in rugby, they are mercifully rare, because no one has padding.

Gotta convert (kick) the try (touchdown) and the kick is taken from where you place the ball down when scoring the try so it’s easier nearer the posts. It’s used to be that the kicks only carried points but now it’s 5 points for the try and a further 2 points for the conversion (kick), you also get penalties and drop-goals (kicks at goal from open play) which both carry 3 points. Gotta pass backwards, stay behind the gain line (imaginary line between two teams where the ball is) and you can kick in any direction. Well that’s the basics anyway!

when you put the ball down behind the try line, its a 5 points. you then get a chance to add an additional 2 points from a conversion. There are also 3 points available if you score from a penalty kick between the posts, or a drop goal.

Five points for a try(touchdown) then you get a chance for another two(a conversion) by kicking the ball though the posts similar to the NFL but you cant just run into the "endzone" to score the ball has to be placed on the ground....and three points for a field goal kicking the ball though the posts while the balls in play or from a penalty

OK. It's a continuous, flowing game like soccer, basketball etc. In principle the teams remain the same throughout the game (though individual players may be pulled off for injury, sent off by the ref, or just pulled off for a bit) - there's no 'offence' or 'defence' set of players. The ball can't be thrown forward only back (or as near to sideways as they can get it). Only the ball carrier can be tackled. The ball can be kicked forward and caught by a member of the same team (though there are lots of rules concerning this that I don't understand!). To score a try/touchdown the ball must be physically in the hands of the player and placed on the ground - the player can't just run across the line holding it. It's good to touch down between the goal posts because the converting kick is taken from a point opposite to the try, so a touchdown on the edge of the pitch means a difficult angle for the kicker.. The referee is respected - if you want to go further watch one of the Nigel Owens videos. Old saying: "'football is a game for gentlemen played by hooligans, and rugby union is a game for hooligans played by gentlemen".

Big difference with NFL & rugby is you cannot tackle someone unless they have the ball. You can’t throw the ball a forward direction. Most of these tackles are illegal & would be sanctioned for too high.

In South Africa we know more about grid iron football than you guys in America know about rugby. It's only because of all the fantastic football movies that Hollywood produces that got to see growing up.

Highly recommend checking out a Rugby match, for me better than any other sport in the world. Need to be fit as hell to play this. South African culture is based around this sport 😂
